Chapter 7 - The New Integration

Two weeks later, a moving truck passed through the iron gates of the Moretti estate. Lily sat in the front seat of Claire's modest sedan, her nose pressed against the glass.

"Wow, Mommy! It really is a castle!" Lily squealed.

Claire smiled, though her hands gripped the steering wheel tight. She had accepted Adrian's offer. The safety and financial security for Lily were simply too massive to turn down, but she was still terrified of how the triplets would react to sharing their space with a girl.

When the car stopped in the driveway, the front doors of the mansion burst open. Noah, Caleb, and Miles ran down the steps.

Lily hopped out of the car, clutching a well-worn stuffed rabbit named Barnaby. She stood behind Claire's leg, looking shyly at the three identical boys.

Noah stepped forward, looking Lily up and down. "Is that your rabbit?"

"Yes," Lily whispered. "His name is Barnaby. He's very brave."

Caleb smirked. "Does he like traps?"

"No," Lily said, stepping out from behind Claire, her little chin lifting defiantly. "But I do. My mommy told me about your red duct tape. I know how to tie a double-knot."

Noah and Caleb looked at each other, their eyes lighting up. Miles walked past them, holding out a small piece of paper. He handed it to Lily. It was a drawing of a little girl with a rabbit, and this time, the girl had a bright, detailed smile.

"Welcome to our house," Miles said quietly.

Claire felt a tear slip down her cheek as Lily smiled back, grabbing Miles's hand. "Thank you! Want to see my coloring books?"

Adrian appeared at the top of the stairs, watching the interaction. He had abandoned his usual stiff suit for a casual black sweater and jeans. As Claire walked up the steps, he extended his hand to help her with her bags.

"They like her," Adrian noted, his voice softer than Claire had ever heard it.

"They're children, Adrian. They like anyone who wants to play," Claire said, looking up at him.

"No," Adrian countered, his fingers lingering on hers for a second too long as he took the suitcase. "They only like people who belong here."
