Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Gilded Hall

The gala progressed in a blur of clinking champagne flutes, polite small talk, and calculated handshakes. Adrian never left Claire’s side for more than thirty seconds. Whenever a corporate executive or local politician approached to curry favor, Adrian smoothly introduced Claire not as an employee, but as "my partner in managing the estate," effectively shutting down any condescending remarks before they could be spoken.

Around nine o’clock, Adrian was cornered near the terrace doors by Marcus Vance, the senior partner of Boston’s most cutthroat corporate law firm—a man whose expensive suit couldn't hide the predatory glint in his eyes.

"Adrian, magnificent turnout tonight," Vance said, raising his glass in a toast before his eyes flicked over to Claire, a patronizing smile stretching across his thin lips. "And I see you've brought a... unique guest tonight. Staff usually stays in the nursery, doesn't it?"

The air around Adrian dropped twenty degrees. The casual, relaxed posture vanished, replaced instantly by the terrifying stillness of a predator locked onto its target.

"Ms. Bennett is not staff, Marcus," Adrian said, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all warmth. "She is the head of my household. And if I ever hear you refer to her position in this house with that tone again, you won't have to worry about securing a retainer from Mercer Holdings, because you won't have a firm left to represent."

Vance’s smile faltered. He took a hasty step back, raising his hands defensively. "Just a joke, Adrian. No offense intended."

"Save your jokes for the courtroom," Adrian snapped.

Vance bowed his head stiffly and melted back into the crowd.

Claire exhaled a breath she didn't realize she’d been holding. She looked up at Adrian, seeing the rigid tension in his jaw. "You didn't have to threaten him."

"Yes, I did," Adrian said flatly, turning his gaze back down to her. The harshness in his eyes instantly softened, replaced by a quiet intensity that made Claire’s breath catch. "No one in this city speaks down to the people I care about."

Before Claire could process the weight of that word— care—a sudden commotion erupted near the main entrance of the ballroom.

A sharp, metallic crash echoed through the high-ceilinged room as a silver champagne tower shattered against the marble floor. Screams rang out. The string quartet stopped playing mid-note.

Instantly, Adrian’s body went rigid. His hand dropped to his lapel, his thumb pressing a discreet emergency transponder hidden beneath the silk fabric. Within three seconds, two of his private security operatives—men in identical dark suits who had been blending seamlessly into the crowd—materialized at his flanks.

"Boss," the lead operative, a scarred ex-marine named Keller, said sharply. "Perimeter breach at the West service entrance. Multiple unregistered individuals entering the service corridor."

Adrian didn't panic. His mind moved with terrifying speed, calculating threats, exits, and variables. He grabbed Claire’s wrist, his grip firm but not painful.

"Stay close to me," he ordered, his voice brooking no argument.

"What about Lily?" Claire asked, her eyes wide with sudden terror. "She's back at the estate—"

"My security detail at the mansion is the best money can buy," Adrian said, pulling her toward a private exit behind the ballroom stage. "They are locked down. Our problem is right here."
