Chapter 3 - THE SIEGE OF MYERS PARK

At 3:30 AM, three unmarked black SUVs pulled up to the security gates of the Ferguson Estate in Myers Park—Charlotte’s most exclusive, ultra-wealthy enclave.
The wrought-iron gates were topped with golden spears, surrounding an eight-thousand-square-foot mansion designed to resemble an English manor. High-definition security cameras swept the perimeter, and two private security guards in black tactical gear stood post near the stone driveway.
I stepped out of the lead SUV, flanked by Special Agent Lin and four armed military investigators wearing federal search-warrant jackets.
As we approached the gate, one of the private guards unclipped his holster strap, stepping forward with a flashlight aimed directly at my face.
“This is private property!” the guard yelled. “Turn around immediately, or you will be trespassed!”
I didn't slow my pace. I walked straight up to the iron gate, stopping inches from the flashlight beam.
“I am Colonel Rachel Gardner, United States Army,” I announced clearly. “I am executing an emergency federal search and seizure warrant issued under Title 18, Section 1201 of the United States Code for human trafficking, hostage detention, and grand extortion.”
“I don't care who you are!” the guard snapped, pulling his sidearm halfway out of its holster. “You don't have jurisdiction here! Leave now!”
Before the guard could clear his holster, Special Agent Lin stepped forward, drew her sidearm with lightning speed, and pressed the barrel directly against the center of the guard’s forehead through the iron bars.
“Federal agent!” Lin roared. “Drop the weapon! Touch that trigger and you will be facing fifty years in federal penitentiary for armed obstruction of justice!”
The guard’s eyes went wide with terror. His hands began to shake. He slowly lowered his gun and dropped it onto the damp grass. His partner immediately raised his hands in the air.
“Open the gate,” I commanded.
The guard reached into his pocket with trembling fingers and pressed the remote. The heavy iron gates swung open with a low, mechanical groan.
We marched up the winding stone driveway.
The house was dark, save for the ambient lights highlighting the marble fountain in the center of the lawn.
We didn't knock.
Two military investigators stepped up to the massive carved oak front doors with a heavy hydraulic breaching tool. With two violent, thunderous bursts, the reinforced deadbolts sheared away from the frame, and the doors burst open with a sound like a cannon shot echoing across the quiet neighborhood.
“FEDERAL AGENTS! SEARCH WARRANT!” Lin shouted as we flooded into the three-story marble foyer.
High above us, on the sweeping double staircase, stood Arthur Ferguson Senior—the patriarch of the family.
He was sixty-five, wearing a silk dressing gown, his white hair disheveled, a heavy glass of scotch clutched in his right hand. Beside him stood Brenda Vance, the corrupt notary, clutching a briefcase to her chest like a shield.
“What is the meaning of this outrage?!” Arthur Senior screamed, his face turning purple with fury. “Where is my wife?! Where are my sons?! Who gave you permission to break down my door?!”
I walked slowly into the center of the foyer, my boots clicking against the imported Italian marble floor. I looked up at the old man standing on his gilded balcony.
“Your sons and wife are currently sitting in federal holding cells, Arthur,” I said, my voice cutting through the cavernous space. “And you are five minutes away from joining them.”
“You’re the soldier,” Arthur spat, his eyes narrowing with pure malice. “The little girl’s mother. You think because you wear a uniform you can invade my home? I have the Governor on speed dial! I’ve donated five million dollars to the state judiciary committee!”
“Then you should have used that money to teach your son not to put his hands on my daughter,” I replied calmly.
I turned to the investigators. “Clear the house. Seize every computer, server, legal document, and flash drive on this property. Special attention to the wine cellar.”
“You can’t touch my private servers!” Arthur roared, sprinting down the stairs toward me, waving his glass in the air. “There are privileged financial records in there! Political campaign accounts! You have no right!”
As Arthur reached the bottom step, he lunged toward me, reaching out a hand as if to grab my uniform lapel.
I didn't flinch.
I stepped smoothly into his guard, grabbed his wrist, twisted it sharply downward, and executed a precise hip sweep.
Arthur Ferguson Senior hit the marble floor with a heavy, breath-stealing thud. His scotch glass shattered into a thousand glittering shards across the foyer. Before he could recover, I pressed my boot firmly into the center of his chest, pinning him to the floor.
He gasped for air, staring up at me with terror in his eyes.

“Listen to me very carefully, Arthur,” I whispered, leaning down so only he could hear me over the sound of investigators tearing through his home. “Your money is gone. Your reputation is gone. Your family name will be written in federal court ledgers under organized crime. If you ever so much as look in my daughter’s direction again, I will personally ensure your trial takes place in a military court where your Governor friend has no power to save you.”
Above us, on the landing, Brenda Vance dropped her briefcase. It popped open on impact, scattering dozens of pre-signed, fraudulent legal documents across the stairs like confetti.
