Chapter 3 - THE OFFICE CONFRONTATION

At 10:30 AM, the sleek glass lobby of Apex Consulting in downtown Denver was humming with the return of post-holiday business.
Ryan sat at his corner office desk, nursing a terrible hangover from a night spent on his parents' hotel couch. His suit was wrinkled, his hair unwashed, and his phone had been buzzing continuously with frantic calls from his father.
"Ryan! You have to fix this!" Grant’s voice had screamed over the receiver an hour earlier. "The police came to our hotel room this morning! They served me with a temporary restraining order! I can't go within five hundred feet of your wife!"
"Dad, just stay calm," Ryan had lied, his hands trembling as he tried to log into his online banking app. "I'm going to call Claire right now. She's just dramatic. She'll calm down once she realizes how bad this looks for my career."
But when Ryan opened his banking app, his screen flashed a bright red warning box:
ACCOUNT ACCESS REVOKED. CONTACT PRIMARY ACCOUNT HOLDER.
Panic, cold and sharp, seized Ryan’s chest. He refreshed the page. Nothing. He opened his American Express app.
CARD STATUS: CANCELLED.
Before he could process the screen, his office door swung open without a knock.
Two men in tailored dark charcoal suits walked into his office, followed by two uniformed Denver Police officers. Behind them stood Eleanor Vance, carrying a leather briefcase.
"Ryan Bennett?" Eleanor asked, her voice cutting through the room like a razor.
Ryan scrambled out of his leather chair, his face turning pale. "Who are you? You can't just walk into my private office!"
"I am Eleanor Vance, legal counsel for Dr. Claire Bennett," Eleanor said smoothly, setting a thick stack of legal documents directly onto his mahogany desk. "You are being formally served with a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage, an Emergency Ex Parte Restraining Order, and a Notice of Civil Fraud Investigation."
"What?!" Ryan gasped, looking wildly at the two police officers standing by the door. "Divorce?! Fraud?! What are you talking about?!"
"Six months ago, you forged Dr. Bennett’s signature on a two-hundred-thousand-dollar loan document with First National Bank," Eleanor explained, pulling out a laminated copy of the loan application. "The signature has already been analyzed by an independent forensic handwriting expert. It is a fraudulent imitation. First National Bank has been notified, and they have frozen all accounts associated with your Social Security number."
"That... that was a joint marital decision!" Ryan stammered, his eyes darting toward the glass walls of his office, where several of his colleagues were beginning to stare. "Claire knew about that loan! She agreed to help my family!"
"Dr. Bennett never signed that document," Eleanor stated flatly. "And as of eight o'clock this morning, she has executed a complete revocation of your residency rights at Penthouse 4B. Building security has packed your personal clothing into three boxes, which are currently sitting at the loading dock downstairs."
"You... you packed my clothes?!" Ryan yelled, his voice cracking with humiliation. "That's my home! Everything in that penthouse belongs to us!"
"Nothing in that penthouse belongs to you, Mr. Bennett," Eleanor replied cold and clear. "The real estate deed, the artwork, the furniture, and even the clothes on your back—which were purchased using Dr. Bennett's primary credit card—were funded exclusively by her pre-marital assets."
At that moment, Ryan’s office phone rang. It was the Managing Partner of Apex Consulting.
Ryan picked up the receiver with a trembling hand. "H-hello?"
"Ryan, get into my office right now," his boss's voice barked through the line, cold and furious. "The District Attorney’s office just called our compliance department. They are issuing a grand jury subpoena for your financial records regarding an ongoing criminal assault investigation. What the hell is going on?"
The line went dead.
Ryan dropped the phone receiver, his knees giving out as he slumped back into his chair. He looked up at Eleanor Vance, his arrogance completely shattered, replaced by the pathetic terror of a child who had finally realized the world did not revolve around him.
"Where... where is Claire?" Ryan whispered, his eyes filling with frantic tears. "I need to speak to my wife. Please... let me talk to her. I love her. I didn't mean for Dad to hurt her! I was just caught in the middle!"
"Dr. Bennett has no interest in speaking to you," Eleanor said, closing her briefcase with two sharp, metallic snaps. "If you attempt to contact her by phone, email, or through third parties, you will be in direct violation of the restraining order and will be immediately remanded into police custody."

Eleanor turned toward the door, then paused, looking back at Ryan with an expression of cold pity.
"Oh, and Mr. Bennett," Eleanor added smoothly. "I suggest you advise your father to seek legal counsel immediately. The process server is currently delivering a foreclosure notice to his garage in Colorado Springs."
