Chapter 6 - The Pit of Poverty

By 2:00 PM that afternoon, the temperature in Atlanta had plunged.

Inside a cramped, dirty consultation room at the Fulton County Public Defender’s Office, Jeffrey Sterling sat at a metal table, staring wildly at a young, overworked public defense attorney named Brian Miller.

"What do you mean I can't get bail?!" Jeffrey screamed, slamming his handcuffed wrists against the table. "I'm a prominent businessman! I run a multi-million dollar corporation!"

Brian Miller didn't even look up from his cluttered desk. He rubbed his bloodshot eyes, pulling out a freshly printed document from the county clerk's office.

"You used to run a corporation, Mr. Sterling," Brian said flatly. "As of two hours ago, Vance-Sterling Global held a press conference. You've been terminated for cause, your equity has been seized, and the firm has been renamed The Liam Group. Furthermore, the district attorney has upgraded your charges based on the Emory Children's Hospital medical reports."

"Upgraded?!" Jeffrey gasped, his voice cracking. "To what?!"

"Aggravated child cruelty, felony endangerment, corporate wire fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy," Brian listed off with chilling indifference. "The prosecution is treating you as an extreme flight risk because of the offshore accounts you tried to hide in the Caymans—which, by the way, were frozen by federal authorities three hours ago."

"Frozen?!" Jeffrey jumped up from his chair, his chair clattering backward onto the linoleum floor. "All of them?! What about my mother's account?!"

"Frozen," Brian repeated. "Your mother is currently being questioned by IRS criminal investigators regarding tax evasion linked to those exact accounts. She was evicted from her motel room an hour ago because her credit cards were declined, and she couldn't pay the bill."

Jeffrey fell back into his chair, his head buried in his hands, his body shaking with pure, unadulterated terror. "This is impossible... this is a nightmare... Madeline can't do this..."

"She isn't just doing it, Mr. Sterling," Brian said, leaning forward. "She’s doing it with mathematical precision. Her legal team has filed forty-two separate civil suits against you simultaneously. Every lawyer in the state of Georgia knows who she is now. Nobody will take your case on contingency, and you don't have a single dollar left to pay a private retainer."

The heavy metal door of the consultation room buzzed and swung open.

A guard stepped inside. "Sterling, you have a visitor. Ten minutes."

Jeffrey scrambled to his feet, a sudden wave of pathetic hope surging through his chest. "Is it Madeline? Did she come to talk?"

"No," the guard said coldly. "It's your associate."

Cynthia Vance walked into the room, flanked by an armed correctional officer.

She was dressed in an orange county jail jumpsuit, her hair unwashed, her face pale, bruised, and devoid of any makeup. She looked completely broken, her eyes wide with frantic, manic panic.

"Jeffrey!" Cynthia shrieked the moment the door closed, rushing to the table. "You have to tell them! Tell them it was all your idea! Tell them I didn't know about the money or the boy!"

Jeffrey stared at her, his panic turning into instant, burning hatred. "My idea?! You were the one who wanted him locked in the pantry, Cynthia! You were the one who said he was scaring your baby!"

"Because you told me to!" Cynthia screamed back, tears streaming down her dirty face. "My uncle Marcus disowned me! He kicked me out of the family trust! My baby... my baby was taken by Child Protective Services this morning because I couldn't provide a safe home!"

"Your baby?!" Jeffrey laughed hysterically, a broken, terrifying sound echoing off the metal walls. "What about my life?! I lost my company! I lost my house! I'm sitting in a jail cell because of you and your greedy, worthless family!"

"Don't you dare blame me, you weak, pathetic coward!" Cynthia lunged across the metal table, her nails reaching out to scratch his face. "You lured me in with promises of luxury! You told me Madeline was an idiot! You ruined my life!"

"Order in the room!" the guard barked, stepping forward with his nightstick drawn, shoving Cynthia back into her chair.

Cynthia collapsed onto the metal table, sobbing hysterically, her hands clutching her orange jumpsuit. "I have nothing left, Jeffrey... nothing... they took my car, they seized my jewelry, my clothes... everything..."

Jeffrey sat back in his chair, staring blankly at the stained ceiling.

In that quiet, dark consultation room, listening to the desperate wails of the mistress he had sacrificed everything for, the horrifying reality finally crushed his soul.

He had traded a brilliant, fiercely loyal, powerful wife who had built an empire for him... for a greedy, shallow snake who had helped him destroy himself.

He had traded his sweet, innocent son... for a lie.

Now, he was sitting in a freezing jail cell, stripped of his wealth, his status, his name, and his freedom—facing decades behind iron bars, while the woman he had treated like dirt rose to the absolute pinnacle of power.
