Chapter 5 - The Trail of Cold Ash

The room went dead silent.
"Where did they take him?!" Julian roared, lunging across the table.
Detective Miller instantly stepped between them, holding Julian back with both hands against his chest. "Julian! No! Don't do it! Let us handle this!"
"You have twenty minutes before my father’s legal team files an injunction with the state appellate court, Thomas," Victoria said, sitting back down and smoothing her skirt with absolute calm. "You won't find him. He’s already outside state jurisdiction. And if you attempt to press charges against me, the Sterling family will release documents proving that the Vance Maritime Corporation was complicit in the laundering scheme from day one."
Julian looked down at her, his rage suddenly vanishing, replaced by a cold, surgical clarity that chilled everyone in the room.
He pulled out his cell phone, pressed a button, and placed it on the table in front of Victoria.
"What is this?" Victoria asked, frowning slightly.
"That’s a live audio feed from the Yale New Haven Trauma Intensive Care Unit," Julian said.
Through the phone’s speaker came the rhythmic, steady beep of a heart monitor, followed by the deep, clear voice of a medical officer.
"Mr. Vance? This is Dr. Aris. Miss Santos has stabilized following emergency neurosurgery. She is conscious, coherent, and the state prosecutor is currently taking her official statement."
Victoria’s calm demeanor cracked. A small, violent tremor appeared at the corner of her left eye.
"Furthermore," Julian said, leaning down until his face was six inches from hers, "Maria didn't just hear knocking tonight, Victoria."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, bent slip of yellow paper—a scrap torn from a sketch pad that he had found hidden inside Maria’s blood-soaked apron pocket during the forensic sweep.
He unfolded it and laid it gently in front of Victoria.
On the paper were six digits written in dark charcoal, followed by a GPS coordinate.
"Leo knew Maria came down to clean the utility closet every Tuesday at midnight," Julian said softly. "He spent three months working a loose brick free behind the wall. He slipped her this note through the mortar crack two days ago."
Julian leaned closer, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.
"It’s the entry code to your father’s private estate in Martha’s Vineyard. The estate where your family keeps their private private airfield."
Victoria’s face went completely, utterly gray.
All the arrogance, all the aristocratic coldness, vanished in a single breath.
"Erickson," Julian called out over his shoulder, never breaking eye contact with his former fiancée.

"Sir?"
"Prepare the helicopter. We’re going to Massachusetts."
