Chapter 4 - You Came Too Late

By noon the following day, the heat outside St. Augustine Medical Center was suffocating.

Daniel Whitmore sprinted through the glass doors of the main lobby, his suit jacket rumpled, his hair unkempt, and dark circles carved deep beneath his eyes. He had spent the last thirty hours torn between Vanessa—who had suffered a panic attack over the drama—and his desperate attempt to figure out what was happening with his son.

He had tried to call Claire forty times. Every call went straight to voicemail.

He hurried past the security desk, taking the elevator directly to the fourth-floor Pediatric ICU. He held a small, plush brown teddy bear in his hand—Noah's favorite toy that he had driven back home to retrieve. He was convinced that if he could just put the bear in Noah's hands, if he could just explain to Claire that he had acted out of sheer, overwhelming panic, everything could somehow go back to the way it was.

He turned the corner into the quiet PICU corridor, his feet moving fast toward Room 408.

Standing directly outside the door was Dr. Elena Marsh. Beside her were two armed hospital security officers and a man in a sleek gray suit holding a leather briefcase—Claire’s attorney.

Daniel slowed down, his chest heaving as he approached the group. "Excuse me. I'm Daniel Whitmore. I'm Noah's father. I need to see my son."

He reached for the silver handle of Room 408.

Dr. Marsh shifted her position, stepping directly into his path. She raised her hand, her palm flat, blocking the door.

"Mr. Whitmore," Dr. Marsh said, her voice icy, exhausted, and carrying a terrifying weight of finality. "You cannot enter this room."

Daniel blinked, a forced, nervous laugh escaping his lips. "What are you talking about? I'm his father! I have a right to be in there with my wife!"

"You no longer have any rights here, Mr. Whitmore," the man in the sleek suit stepped forward, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from his briefcase and shoving them against Daniel's chest. "I am Marcus Vance, legal counsel for Claire Whitmore. You have been served with an emergency temporary restraining order, effective immediately. Furthermore, Mrs. Whitmore has formally removed you as a medical decision-maker for Noah."

"This is insane!" Daniel yelled, his face turning bright red as he dropped the teddy bear onto the floor. "Claire can't do this! I made a mistake, okay? I panicked! I thought the other kid was dying!"

"The other kid was fine, Mr. Whitmore," Dr. Marsh interrupted, her eyes burning with a fierce, quiet disgust that made Daniel freeze. "I reviewed the intake files for Lily Reed. Her oxygen saturation upon arrival was ninety-eight percent. She had a mild seasonal cough. She was discharged three hours later with a basic inhaler prescription."

Daniel swallowed hard, his throat dry. "I... I didn't know... I thought—"

"You told the triage nurse that the Reed child arrived first," Dr. Marsh continued, her voice echoing down the silent hallway. "We have pulled the security camera footage from the lobby at 2:17 a.m. The footage clearly shows your wife running through the doors three full seconds ahead of you, holding a child in active status epilepticus. You deliberately lied to the intake nurse to secure immediate care for your mistress's daughter."

Daniel’s knees felt weak. He backed up until his spine hit the wall opposite the door. "No... no, it wasn't like that... I love my son! Please, just let me go in there and ask him to forgive me! Let me talk to Claire!"

"Noah cannot hear you, Mr. Whitmore," Dr. Marsh said softly, her words hitting Daniel like physical blows. "And even if he could, he is no longer capable of understanding your words. We completed the brain-death testing twenty minutes ago. His brain function is zero."

Daniel gasped, his hands flying up to clutch his head. "No... no, no, no! God, please, no!"

"Mrs. Whitmore is inside right now, holding her son's hand as we prepare to remove life support," Dr. Marsh said, her tone leaving no room for argument, no room for hope, and no room for redemption.

She stared down at the broken, weeping man who had sacrificed his own blood for a lie.

"You came too late, Mr. Whitmore," Dr. Marsh said cold. "Now leave this hospital before security removes you by force."
