Chapter 7 - The Sky Over Saint-Tropez

Four months later.
The Mediterranean sun blazed gold over the coastal cliffs of Saint-Tropez, casting shimmering light across the turquoise waters of the French Riviera.
A sprawling, whitewashed villa sat high atop the hillside, surrounded by olive groves, blooming purple bougainvillea, and terracotta terraces overlooking the sea.
In the private courtyard of the villa, four-year-old Harper Carter was running across the lush grass wearing a bright yellow sundress, chasing a golden retriever puppy. Her dark hair was neatly brushed and braided, her cheeks were full and rosy, and her bright, musical laughter echoed clear and joyful across the sunlit terrace.
Sitting at a long wooden table near the infinity pool, Mia Carter was reading a book, sipping a fresh glass of chilled lemonade. She wore a simple linen dress, her wrists free of bandages, her skin glowing with health and peace. The fear that had haunted her dark eyes for three years was entirely gone, replaced by a deep, quiet tranquility.
Footsteps sounded along the stone walkway.
Dominic Vale stepped out onto the terrace, wearing a white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up and dark slacks. He looked younger, the dark lines of tension around his eyes smoothed by four months of distance from the brutal world of New York politics and mob warfare.
Harper caught sight of him instantly.
“Grandpa Dom!” she squealed, dropping her puppy’s leash and sprinting across the lawn.
Dominic crouched down, a genuine, warm smile opening across his face as he caught the little girl in his broad arms, lifting her high into the air as she giggled with delight.
“Look at how fast you’re running, Harper,” Dominic laughed, setting her down gently on the grass. “Did you feed the puppy?”
“Yes! He ate all his breakfast!” Harper announced proudly, pointing a tiny finger toward the dog before turning to run back toward the grass.
Dominic walked over to the wooden table and sat in the chair across from Mia.
Mia set her book down, offering him a warm, affectionate smile. “Did the morning calls finish?”
“They’re finished,” Dominic said, leaning back in his chair. “Senator Bennett was convicted yesterday on fourteen counts of federal bribery and wire fraud. He’s going to prison for twenty years. Claire accepted a plea bargain—ten years without parole at a federal facility in Connecticut.”
Mia took a quiet breath, looking out over the sparkling sea. “And Nathan?”
“Nathan received consecutive life sentences,” Dominic said flatly. “He will never see the outside of a federal supermax facility again.”
Mia reached across the wooden table and laid her hand gently over Dominic’s worn, calloused palm. “You gave up your entire empire in New York, Dominic. You sold the shipping lines, dissolved the trusts, and walked away from forty years of power.”
Dominic looked at her, then looked across the lawn where Harper was laughing as the puppy chased her dress.
“I didn't give up an empire, Mia,” Dominic said softly, his fingers closing gently around hers. “I paid off a debt. For forty years, I thought power was measured by how many men answered your call or how much land you owned. I was wrong.”
He looked into Mia’s clear, beautiful eyes, feeling the warmth of the sun on his face.
“Power is being able to protect the people who depend on you,” Dominic murmured. “And for the first time in my life... I am exactly where I belong.”
Harper ran back to the table, leaning her chin against Dominic’s knee, looking up at him with wide, happy eyes.
“Grandpa Dom?” she asked softly.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Are we going to stay here forever?”
May you like
Dominic leaned down, scooped her up into his lap, and wrapped his arms around both Mia and her daughter as the Mediterranean wind blew softly through the olive trees.
“Forever, Harper,” Dominic promised. “Forever.”
