Chapter 5 - The Legacy of Love

One year later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the manicured back lawn of the Caldwell estate in Greenwich. The air was filled with the fresh scent of cut grass, blooming hydrangeas, and the sound of children's laughter.
A large white marquee had been set up on the grass, decorated with colorful balloons, ribbons, and a giant banner that read: HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY, AVA, OWEN, MILES & SOPHIE!
Dozens of guests filled the lawn—corporate executives, family friends, and staff members. Nathan Cole stood near the catering table, drinking a glass of iced tea, chatting merrily with Margaret Ellis, who was dressed in her finest Sunday dress, beaming with pride.
In the center of the lawn, on a large blanket spread across the grass, four healthy, vibrant one-year-olds were crawling, playing, and attempting their very first unsteady steps.
Ava was happily banging a wooden block against a toy drum. Miles was attempting to pull himself up using the leg of a chair. Owen was quietly inspecting a giant stuffed bear, and little Sophie was giggling hysterically as Ethan held her under her arms, lifting her high into the air toward the bright blue sky.
"Look at you, birthday girl!" Ethan laughed, lowering Sophie down to press a kiss to her chubby, sun-warmed cheek.
Ethan looked entirely transformed. He had gained back his healthy weight, his posture was relaxed, and his dark eyes were filled with a bright, steady joy that infected everyone around him. He set Sophie down on the blanket beside her siblings, where she immediately crawled over to grab Ava’s wooden block.
Clara walked across the grass, wearing a yellow summer dress that caught the warm breeze, holding a small tray with four tiny birthday cupcakes, each topped with a single lit candle.
"Time for the candles!" Clara called out, her voice ringing clearly across the lawn.
The guests gathered in a warm circle around the blanket. Ethan dropped down to his knees beside Clara, his shoulder brushing against hers as they set the tray down in front of the four children.
The babies stared at the flickering yellow flames with wide, curious eyes.
Nathan stepped forward, raising his glass. "A toast!" he announced, his voice carrying over the crowd. "To the Caldwell quadruplets! One year ago, doctors called them miracles. Today, we just call them a handful!"
The crowd laughed and cheered, raising their glasses in unison.
Ethan looked down at his four children, then turned his head to look at the garden wall behind them. Mounted permanently on the brick wall beside the blooming roses was a beautiful bronze plaque featuring a sculpted portrait of Nora, accompanied by a inscription:
Nora Caldwell Her love is the ground beneath our feet, the sky above our heads, and the voice that guides us home.
Ethan reached out, taking Clara’s hand into his own, his fingers weaving firmly through hers. Clara looked up at him, her eyes shining with happiness, squeezing his hand in return.
"Are you ready, daddy?" Clara asked softly, pointing to the candles.
Ethan looked at Ava, Owen, Miles, and Sophie, who were all looking up at him, their faces bright, healthy, and entirely free of fear.
"I'm ready," Ethan whispered.
Together, Ethan and Clara leaned down toward the four tiny cupcakes. The four babies leaned forward too, mimicking their parents, their small mouths open in wide, joyous grins.
"On three," Ethan said softly, his voice full of love. "One... two... three..."

With a single shared breath, they blew out the four candles together.
As the thin trails of sweet white smoke drifted up into the warm summer afternoon, the lawn erupted into clapping, cheering, and joyful music. The four children squealed with delight, clapping their small hands, knowing with complete, unbreakable certainty that they were safe, that they were cherished, and that they would never, ever be alone in the dark again.
