Chapter 6 - The DNA Result

Forty-eight hours passed in a blur of surreal intensity.

I cancelled every corporate meeting, delegated my executive duties to my chief operating officer, and locked the gates of the estate to all outside visitors. For the first time in three years, I didn't check my stock portfolio. I didn't look at market reports.

I spent forty-eight hours learning how to be a father.

I learned that Sophia loved yellow crayons, hated green beans, and insisted on having three bedtime stories read to her before she would close her eyes. I learned that she was terrified of the vacuum cleaner and that she sang a nonsense song about purple squirrels whenever she washed her hands.

On Thursday afternoon at three o’clock, Arthur Vance walked into my study.

He didn't speak. He simply placed a single, sealed white envelope onto the center of my desk.

My hands trembled as I picked up the paper opener.

I sliced the envelope open and pulled out the three-page report from the genetic diagnostics lab in San Francisco.

I skipped past the legal disclaimers, the technical descriptions of short tandem repeat (STR) loci analysis, and the statistical probability formulas.

I read the final conclusion at the bottom of page two:

PATERNAL MATCH: ETHAN WHITFIELD — 99.999%

MATERNAL GENETIC MATCH: CLAIRE WHITFIELD (SPECIMEN #042) — 99.999%

MATERNAL GESTATIONAL CARRIER: MARIA ALVAREZ

CONCLUSION: SAMPLES A AND B CONFIRM FULL BIOLOGICAL PARENTHOOD OF SUBJECT SOPHIA ALVAREZ-WHITFIELD.

I dropped the paper onto the desk.

I covered my face with both hands and wept.

They were not tears of grief. They were not the dark, suffocating tears I had shed into Claire’s pillows three years ago. They were tears of pure, overwhelming, blinding joy.

Claire was gone, but she hadn't left me empty. She had left me a piece of her soul—a brilliant, laughing, beautiful little girl who was currently chasing a yellow butterfly across the back lawn.

Arthur placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. “It’s official, Ethan. She is your daughter. In the eyes of science, God, and nature, she belongs to you and Claire.”

“Now we fix the legal side,” I said, wiping my eyes and sitting up straight.

“I’ve already drafted the documents,” Arthur said, pulling a blue folder from his briefcase. “We are filing a private petition for Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity, combined with a gestational carrier adoption adjustment. Maria has agreed to sign full parental relinquishment in exchange for a legal guardianship role as Sophia’s permanent nanny.”

I looked at Arthur. “What about her sister? Elena?”

“Elena will remain in Peru,” Arthur said quietly. “My firm has established a confidential trust fund in South America that will pay Elena a modest stipend on the strict legal condition that she never steps foot in North America again and never speaks to the media. The clinic was acquired by a new parent corporation last year, and the original records were archived. As long as we keep this private, no criminal charges will ever be filed.”

“And Maria?” I asked. “What happens to her?”

“Maria will be given a permanent residence on this estate, a generous annual salary, full health coverage, and a trust fund for her own future,” Arthur said. “She will never have to clean another house for the rest of her life.”
