Chapter 2 - The Sound of Collapsing Walls

The color drained from Eleanor Vance’s face so rapidly she looked like a corpse that had been left out in the winter frost. Her manicured hand, which had struck my cheek just moments before, hovered frozen in the air.
Julian dropped the pen as if it had turned into a live coal. It bounced off the thick legal documents and clattered loudly against the linoleum floor.
“Sarah,” Julian stammered, taking an instinctive half-step backward, his hands flying up defensively. “Sarah Thorne? What—what are you doing here? This is a private family matter—!”
“A family matter?” Sarah’s voice sliced through the sterile air like a scalpel. She walked past Julian without sparing him a second glance, stopping right beside my bed. She reached under my pillow, her long fingers retrieving my smartphone with its flashing recording light still active, and slipped it directly into the clear evidence bag she was carrying. “Mr. Vance, walking into a postpartum patient’s room accompanied by an unclad mistress, brandishing unverified corporate proxies, physical intimidation, coercion under duress, and assault... that isn't a family matter. That’s a textbook criminal conspiracy.”
Victoria let out a small, high-pitched gasp of absolute terror, pulling Julian’s coat tighter around her thighs. “Julian, tell her she can’t do that! Who is this woman? Make her leave!”
“Shut up, Victoria,” Julian hissed, sweat suddenly beading along his hairline. He turned to Sarah, forcing a desperate, oily smile onto his face. “Sarah, let’s be reasonable. We’re all adults here. Genevieve is recovering from a major medical trauma; she’s hallucinating from the painkillers. We were just... we were just discussing corporate restructuring.”
“Restructuring?” Sarah raised an eyebrow, pulling a small digital transcription pad from her briefcase. “Is that what you call extortion? Because my audio equipment—linked securely to a live cloud backup server and monitored by my office—captured every single syllable. Let’s review for the court, shall we? We have the sound of an open palm striking a patient’s face at 4:14 PM. We have threats of institutional commitment. We have extortion of corporate assets signed under physical duress. And, best of all, we have your mistress admitting on high-fidelity recording that you planned this entire maneuver months in advance.”
Eleanor finally found her voice, though it shook with a furious, trembling vibration. “You arrogant little bitch!” she snarled, taking a step toward Sarah. “My son is the Chief Operating Officer of Vance Development! You have no standing here! The board will strip her of her executive title by sundown!”
“Your son was the Chief Operating Officer,” Sarah corrected smoothly, not even flinching as Eleanor advanced. She turned her head slightly toward the doorway. “Officer, please escort Mr. Vance, his mother, and his... guest out of the building. And make sure they understand that any attempt to approach my client, her infant daughter, or any Vance Development property will result in immediate felony arrest warrants.”
The two uniformed security guards stepped into the room, their expressions grim and uncompromising. One of them, a broad-shouldered veteran with a scarred jaw, placed a heavy hand firmly on Julian’s shoulder.
“Sir, you heard the attorney. Move it,” the guard rumbled.
“Julian, do something!” Victoria cried out, her voice breaking as she was practically forced toward the door by the security detail.
Julian tried to dig his heels into the floor, his eyes darting frantically between Sarah, the guards, and me. “Gen! Gen, look at me! You can’t do this! We have an 11-year marriage! We have a child! You’re throwing away everything we built!”
I looked down from my bed at the man I had loved, trusted, and elevated to a position of immense power. My cheek still stung from Eleanor’s slap, but inside my chest, the numbness of my legs was matched by an absolute, freezing clarity of mind.
“You built nothing, Julian,” I said, my voice quiet, steady, and utterly devoid of mercy. “You were just an employee I invited to share my table. And you just fired yourself.”
Eleanor threw one last venomous, hate-filled glare at me before the security guards practically carried her and Julian out into the hallway, the heavy oak door slamming shut behind them with a final, echoing thud.
The room plunged into a profound, suffocating silence.
Hazel let out a soft, whimpering sigh from her bassinet, her tiny fists curling near her face.
I sank back against the pillows, the sudden release of adrenaline leaving my muscles shaking. Sarah watched them go, sealing the evidence bag with a sharp zip, before turning her attention back to me. She walked over, pulled a chair close to the bedside, and gently laid her hand over mine.
“How are you holding up, Gen?” Sarah asked, her professional armor slipping away to reveal deep, genuine concern.
“My legs don't work, Sarah,” I whispered, looking toward the foot of the bed where my limbs lay motionless beneath the white cotton. “And my husband brought his naked mistress to my hospital bed six hours after I gave birth to steal my father’s company.”

Sarah gave my hand a firm, grounding squeeze. “Then it’s a good thing,” she said softly, “that we have forty million dollars, the best neurologists money can buy, and a recording that will ensure Julian Vance never works another day in corporate America.”
She stood up, walking over to the bassinet to gently stroke Hazel’s soft cheek. “Now, let’s talk about phase two. Because getting them out of this room was just the opening argument.”
