Chapter 5 - THE MOUNTAIN FORTRESS

The rotor blades of the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter chopped through the cool evening air as we crested the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

Below us, stretching across three thousand acres of private, gated forestry in the Shenandoah Valley, sat the Vance family estate. It wasn't a marble palace like the gaudy mansion in Greenwich; it was a massive, timber-and-stone fortress built into the side of a granite cliff, surrounded by high-security fencing, satellite arrays, and private landing pads. To the outside world, it was an agricultural research sanctuary. To those in the military intelligence community, it was Fortress Vance—the safest private residence on the North American continent.

The Black Hawk touched down smoothly on the concrete pad.

The side door slid open, and cold, pine-scented mountain air rushed into the cabin.

I stepped out, holding baby Arthur wrapped tightly against my chest inside my thick woolen coat. My father walked beside me, his hand resting gently on my shoulder to steady my footing against the rotor wash.

Standing at the edge of the helipad, shivering with excitement in their puffy winter coats, were my four daughters: eight-year-old Chloe, six-year-old Maya, four-year-old Lily, and two-year-old Grace.

"MOMMY!"

Chloe screamed, running across the concrete as soon as the rotor blades slowed down. Maya and Lily followed right behind her, their tiny boots stomping against the ground, while little Grace toddled along in the rear.

I dropped to my knees on the padded helipad mat, wrapping my left arm around all four of them, burying my face in their sweet, soft hair as tears of overwhelming relief spilled down my cheeks.

"Mommy! We missed you!" Maya cried, hugging my waist tightly. "Grandpa’s friends took us on a big cool airplane with red chairs!"

"Are you okay, Mommy?" Chloe asked, her intuitive eight-year-old eyes noticing the lingering faint bruise on my lip. She reached out her tiny hand, gently touching my chin. "Did... did Daddy hurt you again?"

My heart shattered at her words. Again.

Even though I had tried so hard to hide David’s verbal abuse and aggressive door-slamming behind closed doors over the years, my young daughter had carried the quiet weight of fear in her small heart all along.

I pulled Chloe closer, kissing the top of her head.

"Daddy is gone, sweetie," I whispered, looking into her big, bright eyes. "He’s never, ever going to come near us again. I promise you."

"Is that the baby?" Lily asked, standing on her tiptoes to peek over my arm into the blanket fold.

I leaned down, pulling back the yellow wool to reveal baby Arthur’s peaceful, sleeping face. His tiny pink mouth was open slightly, his chest rising and falling in deep, restful slumber.

"Meet your little brother, girls," I said softly. "His name is Arthur."

"Look!" Maya squeaked, pointing her tiny finger at the baby’s fluttering eyelids. "He opened his eyes! They're blue! Just like Grandpa’s!"

"And just like yours, Maya," I smiled, wiping a tear from my eye.

My father walked up, stepping into the center of our circle. He dropped to one knee, despite his stiff sixty-eight-year-old joints, and pulled all four of my daughters into his massive arms.

"Welcome home, girls," Dad said, his deep voice thick with emotion. "Nobody in this world will ever make you feel small again."

An hour later, the children were safely settled into the estate’s grand timber playroom upstairs, drinking hot cocoa with marshmallow cream prepared by the estate's staff.

I sat in my father’s private study on the ground floor.

The room smelled of old leather, gun oil, and cedar wood. Behind his massive oak desk hung a framed presidential citation, three Distinguished Service Crosses, and a large black-and-white map of global operations.

A roaring fire crackled in the stone fireplace, casting a warm, orange glow across the room.

I sat in a deep leather armchair, nursing baby Arthur, while my father stood near the fire, pouring two glasses of amber bourbon from a crystal decanter.

He walked over and handed me one glass. I took a small sip, feeling the smooth heat spread through my chest, chasing away the final remnants of the cold terror I had endured twelve hours prior.

"How are the federal indictments looking, Dad?" I asked quietly.

My father sat down in the armchair opposite mine, crossing his legs.

"David was formally arraigned at 4:00 p.m. in the Manhattan Federal Courthouse," Dad replied. "The judge denied bail. He’s being held without bond at the Metropolitan Correctional Center."

"What are the official charges?"

"Thirty-four federal counts," Dad listed smoothly. "Racketeering under the RICO statute, money laundering for illegal offshore entities, wire fraud, bank fraud, tax evasion, and felony domestic assault on a protected intelligence family member."

I closed my eyes, letting out a long breath. "How long is he looking at?"

"The minimum sentence for his financial crimes alone is forty-five years," Dad said, taking a slow sip of his bourbon. "Add the federal assault charges, and he will die in a federal penitentiary in Colorado."

I looked down at baby Arthur, who was fast asleep in my arms, his tiny blue-eyed face completely serene.

"He tried to destroy us, Dad," I whispered. "He thought because I was quiet, because I stayed home and raised our daughters while he ran around Manhattan playing the big corporate executive, that I was weak. He thought I had no voice."

My father set his glass down on the side table. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, looking at me with intense pride in his cold blue eyes.

"You are a Vance, Sarah," my father said softly. "You endured six years of his arrogance to protect your daughters. You gathered the financial evidence that brought down a multi-billion-dollar criminal enterprise. You survived labor, a strike to the face, and his vicious threats, and you didn't break for a single second."

May you like

Dad reached out, gently patting my knee with his calloused hand.

"David Moretti didn't strike a weak woman, Sarah," my father added. "He struck a lioness. And he just realized he was inside the cage."
