Chapter 7 - The Investigation of the Betrayal

The next forty-eight minutes were a blur of unimaginable terror and frantic medical intervention.

Outside Room 412, Sarah sat huddled in a plastic chair, rocking back and forth, her eyes fixed on the closed doors where doctors and nurses fought desperately to drag Lily back from the edge of death. Felix stood over her, his jaw set in a rigid, terrifying mask of absolute fury, holding the lethal vial in his clenched fist so tightly his knuckles were bleeding.

Finally, the heavy doors swung open.

The attending physician walked out, wiping sweat from his forehead with a paper towel. He looked exhausted, pale, and deeply shaken.

Sarah scrambled to her feet, grabbing the doctor’s lab coat. “Is she... is she alive?”

“She’s alive,” the doctor said, letting out a long, shuddering breath. “We managed to secure her airway just as her heart rhythm stabilized. We flushed the concentrated potassium chloride from her IV line before it triggered cardiac arrest, but it was a matter of seconds. If we had been thirty seconds later...”

Sarah burst into tears—not of grief, but of overwhelming, miraculous relief—and buried her face in Felix’s chest.

Felix held her tightly, but his eyes remained cold, dead, and focused entirely on vengeance.

“Doctor,” Felix said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “I want this entire room quarantined. I want every security camera recording from the last four hours secured. Do not let anyone—nurse, doctor, administrator, or police officer—touch that medication tray until I return.”

“Mr. Kingsley, what is—?”

“My daughter was poisoned,” Felix interrupted, holding up the small glass vial. “And I am going to find out who ordered it.”

Felix didn't wait for an elevator. He took the emergency stairwell down to the ground floor in three frantic leaps, burst into the hospital’s security control center, and flashed his former corporate ID badge before the startled night guard could stand up.

“I am Felix Kingsley,” he barked. “Access the visitor logs for the fourth-floor pediatric wing between four PM and seven-thirty PM today. Show me every unauthorized entry into Room 412.”

The security guard, intimidated by the sheer, unbridled fury radiating from the former billionaire, frantically clicked his mouse.

“Sir... security footage shows... wait. The digital logs for the fourth-floor medication dispensing drawer were manually overridden at six-fifty PM using an administrative master keycard.”

“Whose card?” Felix demanded, leaning over the console.

The guard squinted at the monitor. “Registered to... Brenda Vance. Former head nurse. She was terminated two weeks ago, but her biometric override profile was never deleted from the central pharmacy database.”

Felix’s mind raced. Brenda Vance. A fired nurse with no motive to target a random pediatric patient unless she was paid to do it.

“Trace her phone records, her financial transactions, her recent deposits,” Felix ordered.

“Sir, I can’t access personal financial records, I’m just a hospital—hz—”

“Look at the hospital’s internal vendor payment gateway,” Felix snapped, grabbing the guard by the shoulder. “Who authorized the pharmacy software integration contract last month? Arden Consulting! Celeste Arden’s private holding firm!”

The puzzle pieces snapped together with the devastating precision of a guillotine.

Celeste hadn't just threatened them with bankruptcy; she had arranged a permanent, untraceable execution disguised as a medical accident, ensuring that even if Felix lost his fortune, he would lose his daughter too.

Felix pulled out his burner phone, dialing a number he hadn't used in five years.

“Marco?” Felix said when the line connected.

“Boss?” a gruff, loyal voice answered from the other end. “I heard you walked away from the board yesterday. Are you alright?”

“Listen to me very carefully, Marco,” Felix said, his voice dropping into a tone that made the security guard step back in fear. “I need you to intercept Celeste Arden tonight. She’s currently hosting a private victory celebration at her penthouse on Fifth Avenue. Gather our old private security detail, bring the forensic accountant files we compiled on her shell companies, and meet me outside her building in twenty minutes.”

“What are we doing, Boss?” Marco asked.

“We’re going to collect a confession,” Felix said.
