Chapter 8 - Awakening in the Ward

The private VIP wing of Mercy General Hospital smelled of antiseptic, fresh linen, and distant rain.
When Julian pushed open the door to Room 402, the room was quiet. Clara Jenkins sat propped up against a stack of white pillows, a clean white bandage wrapped securely around her head. Her face was bruised and pale, but her sharp, intelligent eyes were wide and alert.
As Julian walked in, Clara tried to sit up straighter, but winced in pain.
“Don't move, Clara,” Julian said softly, stepping forward and gently placing his hand over her frail, calloused fingers. “Please. You should be resting.”
Clara looked at him, her expression a mix of sorrow and immense relief. “Mr. Julian... I heard the news on the television in the lobby. They took Miss Vance away. They found... they found the cistern.”
“They did,” Julian whispered, pulling a chair up beside her bed and sitting down. “Because of you, Clara. If you hadn't gone down to the conservatory... if you hadn't spoken up... my brother would have stayed in that dark hole forever.”
A tear slipped down Clara’s weathered cheek. “I couldn't live with it anymore, Mr. Julian. For six years, I kept my mouth shut because she threatened my son’s family. She said if I ever breathed a word about seeing her carry that lead pipe down the cliff path... she would make sure he lost his job, his house, everything.” Clara choked back a sob. “I was a coward. I let her stay in that house. I let her nearly kill me.”
“You are no coward, Clara,” Julian said firmly, squeezing her hand with absolute conviction. “You risked your life to protect the truth. From this day forward, your family is under my personal protection. All medical bills, living expenses, and future security are guaranteed for the rest of your lives.”
Clara looked at him, her eyes shining with gratitude. “Thank you, Mr. Julian. What... what are you going to do now? You gave up the company... the estate...”

Julian looked out the hospital window toward the gray Philadelphia skyline stretching across the horizon.
“I’m going to bury my brother,” Julian said quietly. “And then... I’m going to rebuild everything from the ground up. Without lies. Without shadows.”
