Chapter 7 - The Healing at St. Jude’s

Three weeks later.
The morning sun broke through the grey autumn clouds over Chicago, casting a warm, golden light across the manicured courtyard of the private Hale Medical Center on 12th Street.
The clinic—a state-of-the-art facility funded entirely by Dominic’s private accounts—was closed to the public. High security guards patrolled the perimeter, ensuring no press, no curious onlookers, and no former Marlowe associates could get within two blocks of the building.
Inside the third-floor private pavilion, large windows overlooked a quiet garden filled with oak trees and blooming chrysanthemums.
Dominic Hale sat in a comfortable armchair near the window. He was wearing a simple grey wool sweater and dark trousers, his face looking remarkably rested for the first time in twenty years. The cold, severe tension that had defined his features for two decades had softened into something resembling peace.
Beside his chair, resting comfortably on a custom orthopedic dog bed, was Shadow.
The German shepherd puppy looked entirely different from the mud-soaked, bleeding creature that had burst through the doors of Bellarosa’s. His coat was thick, clean, and shiny—a rich tapestry of black and tan fur. The jagged wound along his ribs had been surgically cleaned, stitched, and healed into a tiny, heroic scar hidden beneath his fur. He wore a soft leather collar with a small silver tag that read: SHADOW HALE.
The door to the private room opened quietly.
Dr. Abram—a brilliant, silver-haired pediatric surgeon who had managed the Hale family's medical needs for thirty years—stepped into the room, holding a medical chart.
"How is she?" Dominic asked immediately, standing up.
Shadow stood up with him, his tail giving a soft, happy wag as he looked toward the bed in the center of the room.
Dr. Abram smiled, his eyes warm behind his small round glasses. "The shoulder infection is completely cleared, Dominic. Her blood counts are back to normal, and she gained two pounds this week. She's resting naturally now. No nightmares for two nights in a row."
Dominic let out a long, quiet breath, looking over at the bed.
Lying beneath a soft yellow blanket was little Emily. Her tangled blond hair had been washed and trimmed into soft, silky curls. She was wearing clean cotton pajamas printed with bright yellow sunshine patterns. Her blue eyes were open, staring quietly at the garden outside the window.
When she heard Dominic’s voice, she turned her head.
A tiny, genuine smile—the first one Dominic had seen—spread across her pale face.
"Dommy," she whispered softly. She had taken to calling him by the same nickname Sophia had used twenty-two years ago.
Shadow leaped up onto the edge of the mattress with smooth, athletic grace. He didn't jump on her wounded shoulder; he settled gently beside her left hip, laying his heavy head directly across her lap. Emily reached out her small, soft hand, her fingers tangling happily in the dog's thick fur.
Dominic walked over to the bed and sat down on the edge. He reached out and gently smoothed a lock of hair from her forehead.
"How are you feeling today, little one?" Dominic asked softly.
"Good," she said, her voice growing stronger every day. "Dr. Abram said I can go play in the garden afternoon."
"You can," Dominic smiled. "Marcus brought three new boxes of toys down from the house. And Tony brought a whole bag of dog treats for Shadow."
"Dominic," Dr. Abram said quietly from the doorway, beckoning him over. "A word, please?"
Dominic squeezed Emily’s hand, patted Shadow’s head, and walked out into the private hallway with the doctor.
Dr. Abram closed the door gently. "The Child Protective Services division completed their background investigation yesterday afternoon, Dominic."
Dominic’s face tightened slightly. "And?"
"Emily’s parents died in a car accident eighteen months ago," Dr. Abram explained. "She had no living relatives. She was placed in a state shelter system before Marlowe’s men intercepted the transfer records."
Dr. Abram pulled a formal document from his chart and handed it to Dominic.
"Because of your... extensive civic connections," Dr. Abram smiled faintly, "and the personal intervention of District Attorney Vance, the family court judge signed the preliminary emergency guardianship papers this morning."
Dominic looked down at the document.
At the top of the page, written in clean legal print, were the words: APPLICATION FOR FULL LEGAL ADOPTION AND GUARDIANSHIP – GRANTED.
Child’s New Name: Emily Sophia Hale.
Legal Guardian: Dominic Joseph Hale.
Dominic’s thumb traced over his sister’s middle name printed on the paper. A quiet heat rose behind his eyes, but he did not let tears fall. For twenty-two years, he had carried a grave in his heart. Today, for the very first time, he felt something new growing in that cold soil.
A future.
"What about the other children?" Dominic asked, looking up at the doctor.
"All fifteen have been reunited with their surviving families or placed in top-tier private care facilities funded by the Hale Foundation," Dr. Abram reported. "The federal prosecutors are holding a press conference at noon to announce the full dismantling of Marlowe’s entire regional network. Over forty arrests were made across three states last night."
The heavy oak doors at the end of the corridor opened, and Marcus walked down the hall carrying two large bags from a bakery in Gold Coast, followed by Tony Graves, who was wearing a clean suit and holding a huge rubber dog toy shaped like a bone.
"Is the princess awake?" Marcus called out, a bright, genuine smile on his face.
"She’s awake," Dominic smiled. "And she wants her breakfast."
Marcus stepped up beside his brother, looking through the glass window at Emily and Shadow sitting together on the bed. He reached out, bumping his shoulder against Dominic’s.
"You did good, Dom," Marcus said quietly. "Dad would have been proud. Sophia would have been proud."
May you like
Dominic looked through the glass. He watched the little girl laugh as Shadow tried to lick her nose, her bright blue eyes shining with life, health, and total security.
"She is proud," Dominic said softly.
