Chapter 3 - THE SHADOW OF MARCOS SANTILLÁN

The atmospheric shift inside the executive office was abruptly shattered by the sharp, buzz of the intercom on Lorenzo’s desk.

Patricia’s voice came through the speaker, tight with alarm.

"Mr. Santillán... your father’s car just pulled into the underground garage. Senior Marcos is coming up to the 20th floor with the legal team. He says he has the finalized merger documents for the Gutierrez Group ready for your signature."

Lorenzo’s face turned into a mask of pure, immediate panic. He stood up instantly.

"He can't see the boy," Lorenzo said, his voice urgent as he looked at Irene. "If my father sees Benji—if he recognizes Jimena's features in him—he will use every high-priced attorney, every corrupt judge in the city to tear him away from you and put him in a boarding school to mold him into an heir."

Irene felt a cold terror grip her spine. She knew the name Marcos Santillán. He was the founder of the conglomerate, an old-money patriarch known for buying politicians and destroying anyone who stood in his path.

"Where do we go?" Irene asked, scooping Benji up into her arms.

Lorenzo walked rapidly toward a section of the wooden bookcase behind his desk. He pulled a heavy leather-bound volume on maritime law, and a hidden latch clicked open. A concealed panel swung inward, revealing a private residential suite built behind the main office—a master bedroom, a private bathroom, and a small kitchenette designed for late-night corporate crises.

"Get in here," Lorenzo commanded softly, guiding Irene and Benji inside. "Stay quiet. There is a monitor here connected to the office camera. You can see everything."

"Lorenzo..." Irene pulled his sleeve, her eyes searching his. "Don't let him hurt us."

Lorenzo looked at her, his eyes firm, steel returning to his spine, but this time tempered with purpose.

"He hurt Jimena," Lorenzo said softly. "He made me a monster for five years. But he will never touch another person I care about. Stay safe inside."

He pulled the hidden panel shut just as the heavy mahogany doors of the main office were kicked open.

Inside the hidden room, Irene stood near the high-definition monitor mounted on the wall. Benji sat on the bed behind her, munching quietly on a butter pastry Patricia had left on the silver tray.

On the screen, an elderly man walked into the office.

Marcos Santillán was seventy-five years old, but he moved with the predatory grace of an old wolf. He wore a bespoke three-piece pinstripe suit, carried a gold-topped cane, and was followed by two younger corporate lawyers carrying thick leather briefcases.

"You're late for the morning briefing, Lorenzo," Marcos said coldly, not bothering to greet his son. He sat in the leather chair Irene had occupied minutes earlier. "The Gutierrez merger is dropping three percentage points because of rumors about your hesitation. Sign the papers today, or I will re-assume the chairman's seat by board vote on Monday."

Lorenzo remained standing behind his desk. He didn't pick up the silver pen laid out beside the documents.

"I’m not signing the Gutierrez merger, Father," Lorenzo said, his voice calm, terrifyingly steady.

Marcos narrowed his cold blue eyes. "What did you say?"

"The Gutierrez Group is bankrupt," Lorenzo replied flatly. "They are hiding seventy million dollars in toxic debt in offshore shell accounts in the Cayman Islands. You knew about it, didn't you? You wanted me to sign the merger so the legal liability would fall entirely on my signature, allowing you to walk away with thirty million in liquidation kickbacks."

The two corporate lawyers behind Marcos shifted uncomfortably, exchanging panicked glances.

Marcos clicked his gold-topped cane against the marble floor with a loud snap. "You insolent fool! I built this empire! You are nothing more than a steward of my name! You will sign those documents, or I will strip you of every share, every account, every luxury you possess!"

"You stripped me of the only thing that ever mattered five years ago, Father," Lorenzo said, stepping out from behind his desk, walking until he stood directly in front of the old man. "You threatened Jimena. You drove her away."

Marcos let out a harsh, cruel laugh. "That peasant girl from the slums? Is that what this insolence is about? I saved you from destroying your career over a nobody! She was weak, Lorenzo. She took her pathetic pride and ran back into the gutter where she belonged!"

Inside the hidden room, Irene squeezed her hands into fists, her blood boiling at the old man's words.

On the monitor, Lorenzo didn't scream. He didn't raise his fist. He pulled a thick white folder from his inner desk drawer and tossed it onto Marcos’s lap.

"That is a complete forensic audit of your private holdings over the last twelve years," Lorenzo said coldly. "Tax evasion, bribing municipal judges in Puebla, illegally expropriating residential land in Iztapalapa. Everything is documented, verified, and backed up on secure off-site servers."

Marcos’s face turned from pale white to a deep, dangerous purple. "You... you dared investigate your own father?"

"I am resigning as CEO of Sterling Financial effective at noon," Lorenzo announced, his voice reverberating through the office. "And if you ever attempt to contact me, use your corporate influence to harass anyone in this city, or step foot in this building again, those documents go directly to the Attorney General’s office."

May you like

Marcos stood up, trembling with rage, leaning heavily on his cane. "You will be a beggar! You will have nothing!"

"I have spent five years having everything and being nothing," Lorenzo replied, turning his back on the old man. "Get out of my office."
