Chapter 5 - The Retribution of a Father

The old Peoria Foundry was a cathedral of rusted iron and crumbling brick. The freezing rain had returned, pouring through the shattered skylights three stories above, creating a steady, rhythmic drumming sound against the flooded concrete floors.

Daniel Mercer sat in the shadows of an old crane platform twenty feet above the main entrance, his M4 carbine resting across his knees. He was invisible in the darkness, his camouflaged gear blending perfectly into the industrial decay.

At exactly 10:00 p.m., the heavy steel doors at the front of the foundry were violently blown off their tracks by a tactical breaching charge.

Six men in unmarked black tactical gear, carrying suppressed submachine guns, poured into the warehouse. They moved with professional cohesion—indicating they were either rogue SWAT operators or high-priced corporate mercenaries hired by the Sterling family. Bringing up the rear, protected by two massive bodyguards, was Marcus Sterling himself, wearing an expensive wool coat that looked entirely out of place in the industrial filth.

"Mercer!" Marcus shouted, his voice echoing off the iron rafters. "Drop the drive and step into the light! We know you're here! If you surrender now, I'll make sure your daughter stays safe in that hospital bed! If you don't... well, accidents happen in intensive care units every day!"

That was the final mistake Marcus Sterling would ever make.

Daniel didn't answer with words. He answered with fire.

He dropped a high-intensity flashbang grenade directly into the center of the tactical stack. The device exploded with a blinding, five-million-candlepower flash and an ear-splitting 170-decibel crack. The six mercenaries were instantly disoriented, their tactical night-vision gear overloading, their balance shattered.

Before the echoes of the explosion could die down, Daniel fired three precise, short bursts from his suppressed rifle. Three of the tactical operators dropped to the concrete floor instantly, neutralized before they could even locate the source of the gunfire.

"Ambush! Elevated position!" the remaining mercenaries screamed, firing wildly into the darkness of the rafters.

Daniel rolled off the crane platform, dropping down to a lower cat-walk with practiced agility. He discarded his rifle, pulled his tactical shotgun from his back scabbard, and fired a heavy, copper-alloy slug through the chest of a fourth operator who was trying to flank his position. The impact sent the man crashing backward into a rusted iron vat.

The remaining two mercenaries panicked, realizing they weren't dealing with an angry civilian veteran—they were dealing with a high-tier ghost from the special operations community. They turned to retreat, but Jim "Ghost" Miller materialized from the rear exit of the warehouse, his sidearm barking twice in the darkness. The final two operators collapsed into the shallow water on the floor.

Marcus Sterling’s two personal bodyguards tried to pull the prosecutor back toward the exit, but Daniel dropped from the rafters like an avenging angel, landing directly between them and the door.

With two fluid, devastating movements, Daniel used the butt of his shotgun to shatter the first bodyguard’s collarbone, then delivered a lethal palm-strike to the second guard’s nose, driving the bone fragments deep into the sinus cavity and dropping him instantly.

Marcus Sterling was left standing alone in the center of the flooded foundry, his expensive coat soaked in rusty water, his bodyguards bleeding out at his feet. The chief prosecutor of the county looked around at the slaughter, his face turning an unearthly, terrified shade of gray as Daniel stepped toward him, the barrel of the shotgun smoking in the cold air.

"You... you can't touch me," Marcus stammered, backing away until his spine hit a rusted iron pillar. "I'm the State's Attorney! Every judge, every politician, every media outlet in this state belongs to my circle! If I die tonight, the full weight of the federal government will hunt you down!"

"I don't care about your circle, Marcus," Daniel said, stopping three feet away. He reached into his vest, pulled out a small, portable digital transmitter, and showed it to the prosecutor. "See this? Jim just finished uploading the entire drug ledger, along with the audio recordings of our phone calls and the live feed of this entire engagement, to the Department of Justice, the FBI, and every major news network in Chicago."

Marcus’s eyes widened, the absolute realization of his total, unmitigated ruin crashing down on him. His wealth, his position, his power—it had all been stripped away in less than ten minutes by a man who didn't care about money.

"Your son broke my daughter’s face in six places," Daniel whispered, his voice dropping into a register that made Marcus’s knees shake. "He took her voice away. So tonight, I'm taking yours."

Daniel didn't shoot him. That would have been too merciful.

Instead, Daniel stepped forward, gripped Marcus Sterling by the lapels of his expensive coat, and delivered a short, explosive, military-grade strike with his elbow directly to the center of the prosecutor’s face. There was a horrific, splintering sound as Marcus’s jaw shattered under the immense, calculated force of a father’s vengeance.

Marcus collapsed into the filthy water, clutching his ruined face, sobbing through broken teeth and blood, completely broken.

Daniel looked down at him for a final time, then turned his back on the ruins of the Sterling empire. He walked out of the foundry into the cold morning air, throwing his tactical vest into the back of his truck.

Two hours later, Daniel sat back in the vinyl chair in Room 214 at Mercy General Hospital. The morning sun was streaming through the window, bathing the room in a soft, warm light.

Lily’s eyes were open. The swelling had gone down just enough for her to see him clearly. She looked at her dad, her fingers twitching gently against the sheets.

Daniel reached out, wrapping his massive, scarred hand around hers. He smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached his eyes for the first time in years.

"It's over, baby," Daniel whispered, kissing her forehead. "The people who hurt you can't speak anymore. You're going to heal. And Daddy’s right here."

Lily couldn't speak, but she squeezed his hand back with everything she had, her green eyes filled with an absolute, unshakeable sense of peace. The storm had passed, the machine had finished its grind, and the family was finally safe.
