Chapter 4 - The Viper at the Gate

Two years later.

Emma was six years old.

The Moretti estate had changed completely. The dark, cold, intimidating silence that had once defined the thirty-acre complex had been shattered by the sound of child's laughter, yellow bicycles speeding down the paved driveways, and the barking of two massive, highly trained Italian Cane Corsos named Caesar and Brutus—dogs that would tear a stranger to pieces on command, but who currently lay on their backs in the grand foyer allowing Emma to tie pink silk ribbons around their thick leather collars.

Elena Vance had transformed as well. She wore elegant cashmere sweaters, managed the estate’s thirty-person staff with grace and quiet authority, and no longer jumped when a heavy oak door slammed shut.

Alejandro Moretti had kept his word.

A private medical suite had been built into the west wing, staffed twenty-four hours a day by a dedicated pediatric nurse and stocked with fifty specialized auto-injectors. A private tutor from Chicago’s top academy came four mornings a week, and whenever Alejandro traveled to meetings in New York, Miami, or Europe, a specialized armored Mercedes with bulletproof glass and an onboard medical team followed three cars behind his personal limousine.

Emma was no longer just the maid's daughter. To the syndicate, she was La Piccola Salvatrice—The Little Savior.

The capos from the North Side, the West Side, and the River District knew that if you wanted a favor from Alejandro Moretti, you did not bring him gold watches or expensive cases of whiskey; you brought a rare drawing book, a box of fine Swiss chocolates, or a plush toy for the little girl with the pink backpack who sat at his right hand during Sunday dinners.

But peace in the underworld is a fleeting shadow.

It was a cold Tuesday afternoon in October. The oak leaves on the estate grounds had turned a deep, fiery red, falling across the long winding driveway.

Alejandro was down in the city attending a high-level summit with the heads of the Five Families to finalize a historic peace treaty regarding the commercial port terminals. Only Frank and a skeleton crew of twelve tactical guards remained at the estate.

At 3:15 P.M., a sleek, dark blue Bentley with blacked-out windows pulled up to the outer security gate.

Inside the security guardhouse, the lead sentry leaned out his window. "State your name and business."

The driver’s window rolled down, revealing a slick, silver-haired man wearing a three-piece charcoal suit and a golden ring bearing the crest of the Donati family—the ruthless syndicate that controlled the eastern shipping corridors.

It was Victor Donati—Alejandro’s oldest, most vicious rival.

"I am here to deliver a personal gift to Mr. Moretti from the Donati Council," Victor said smoothly, his voice dripping with false composure. "A gesture of goodwill prior to the signing of the port agreement."

The sentry checked his log. "Mr. Moretti is not on the premises, sir. He is downtown until six."

"I am aware," Victor replied, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his thin lips. "Which is why I am dropping the gift off with his household director, Mrs. Vance. Mr. Moretti personally instructed me to leave it in the main foyer."

The sentry hesitated. He pressed his radio toggle. "Frank, we have Victor Donati at the main gate. He claims he has clearance from the boss to deliver a gift to Mrs. Vance."

Inside the grand study, Frank frowned, holding his radio. He stepped over to the high window, looking down toward the gate. Something felt wrong. Alejandro had explicitly told him that morning that no members of the Donati family were permitted on the grounds without his personal escort.

"Hold him at the gate, Bob," Frank said into his radio. "I'm calling the boss on the secure line to confirm—"

Before Frank could finish his sentence, a loud, sharp explosion detonated at the base of the outer gatehouse.

BOOM!

A column of black smoke and shattered concrete erupted into the autumn air. The heavy iron gate was blasted clear off its hinges, crashing onto the driveway with a deafening metallic screech.

Three heavy, blacked-out SUVs sped through the destroyed entrance behind the Bentley, their tires screaming against the asphalt as they tore up the winding driveway toward the main house.

"Code Red! Code Red!" Frank roared into his tactical headset, pulling his sidearm from his shoulder holster. "Perimeter breach! All teams engage! Protect the family! Get Mrs. Vance and Emma to the panic room now!"

Down in the west wing playroom, Emma was sitting at her small oak desk, coloring a picture of a dragon with her glitter crayons. Caesar and Brutus, who had been sleeping on the rug beside her, suddenly leaped to their feet, their heavy black hackles raised, a low, terrifying rumble vibrating in their deep chests.

Elena burst into the room, her face pale with terror, her hands trembling violently as she grabbed Emma by the waist.

"Emma! Come on!" Elena gasped, dragging her daughter toward the hidden bookshelf panel that led to the underground reinforced vault.

"Mama, what's that noise?" Emma asked, clutching Barnaby the rabbit tightly against her chest.

"It's nothing, mi corazón! Just stay close to Mama!"

Before Elena could press the hidden release latch behind the wall lamp, the heavy oak double doors of the playroom shattered inward under a hail of high-caliber gunfire.

Splintered wood and plaster dust rained down across the room.

Caesar and Brutus lunged forward with terrifying speed, their massive jaws open, but a barrage of silenced submachine gun fire dropped both majestic dogs onto the rug in a pool of blood.

"NO! CAESAR!" Emma screamed, tears bursting from her eyes.

Through the cloud of white plaster dust stepped Victor Donati, holding a smoking silver pistol, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical vests and black ski masks.

Frank and two estate guards tried to breach the room from the side corridor, but two mercenaries turned and pinned them down with heavy suppressive fire, forcing Frank to fall back behind the thick marble pillars of the hallway.

Victor walked slowly across the ruined room, his polished leather shoes crunching over the shattered wood and spent bullet casings.

He looked down at Elena, who had thrown her body completely over Emma, shielding the six-year-old child with her own spine.

"Get up, maid," Victor sneered, grabbing Elena by her hair and yanking her backward off her daughter.

"Mama!" Emma shrieked, scrambling forward to grab her mother's hands.

A mercenary stepped in, driving the butt of his rifle into Elena's stomach. She collapsed onto the floor, gasping for breath, her hands clutching her ribs in agony.

Victor stepped over Elena’s prone body, leaning down until his sharp, cruel face was inches from Emma’s tear-streaked eyes. He looked at the pink plush rabbit clutched in her hands, his eyes lingering on the flawless black diamond sparkling in its eye socket.

"So," Victor purred, a dark, sickening grin twisting his mouth. "You're the little pest who saved Alejandro’s life two years ago. The little maid's brat he calls his daughter."

Emma glared at him through her tears. Her body was trembling, her heart pounding at a terrifying speed, but deep inside her chest, that same burning, fierce heat that had saved Alejandro came roaring back to life.

"Uncle Alejandro is going to kill you," Emma said, her six-year-old voice shockingly clear and steady. "He's going to throw you in the basement."

May you like

Victor laughed—a harsh, barking sound that made the mercenaries chuckle behind their masks.

"Your 'Uncle Alejandro' is currently trapped in a multi-car ambush down on the interstate, little girl," Victor whispered, reaching out to grip Emma’s collar, pulling her to her feet. "He won't be coming to save you. You are coming with me. Let's see how much of the Chicago docks Alejandro is willing to trade to get his precious little savior back."
