Chapter 5 - The Will of Arthur Blackwood

By 2:00 PM, the storm had completely passed, leaving behind a brilliant sky of unbroken blue over the snow-covered Rockies.

The Mercedes and the security vehicles had gone, taking Richard Sterling away to face the federal indictments that would dismantle his life.

In my study, Arthur sat across from me, sipping a hot cup of black coffee while reviewing the decrypted files from Elena Vance’s micro-drive.

"The evidence is ironclad, Vance," Arthur said, turning his laptop screen toward me. "Sterling had been diverting funds from at least fourteen other properties across the state. The Attorney General is issuing arrest warrants for his accomplices at Vanguard Apex as we speak. Every piece of stolen property will be returned to its rightful owners or their estates."

"What about 142 Birch Hollow?" I asked.

"The deed has been legally restored to the Vance Trust," Arthur confirmed. "The court will clear the forged quitclaim deed by tomorrow morning. The house belongs entirely to Emily and Noah Vance."

I looked out the window, watching the sun reflect off the pristine snow. "Arthur... why did my father set up that trust six years ago? Why Elena Vance?"

Arthur paused, setting his coffee cup down on the saucer with a soft clink. He looked at me for a long moment, his weathered face showing a deep, somber weight.

"I was wondering when you were going to ask that," Arthur said softly.

He reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick, sealed Manila envelope stamped CONFIDENTIAL - EYES ONLY: VANCE BLACKWOOD, and set it on my desk.

"Your father left this in my custody five years ago," Arthur explained. "He instructed me to give it to you only if Elena Vance passed away, or if her children ever came into contact with Blackwood Enterprises."

My hand hovered over the sealed envelope for a second before I picked it up and broke the red wax seal.

Inside was a single sheet of heavy parchment, written in my father’s distinct, elegant handwriting, accompanied by a certified DNA analysis report from a private medical laboratory dated six years ago.

I opened the parchment and read my father's words:

To my son, Vance,

If you are reading this letter, it means I am gone, and circumstances have brought Elena Vance’s family back into your orbit. There is a truth I was too weak to admit during my lifetime, a truth that I hid behind corporate trusts and legal walls.

Six years ago, Elena Vance gave birth to a daughter named Emily. Emily is my biological daughter—your half-sister.

Elena was a woman of deep integrity. When she discovered she was pregnant, she refused to accept money from our family to hide the truth, nor would she allow me to break up my marriage or disrupt our public empire. She asked for only one thing: a simple home where her child could grow up in peace, free from the golden cage and political wars of Blackwood Enterprises.

I created the Birch Hollow Trust to honor her wish and secure my daughter’s future without exposing her to the wolves that surround our family.

Vance, you have built our empire into something greater than I ever could. But an empire without honor is merely a monument to greed. Protect Emily. Protect her little brother. Give them the love and safety that my cowardice denied them.

Your father, Arthur Blackwood Senior.

The paper trembled in my hand.

I looked down at the DNA report attached to the back.

Probability of Paternity: 99.98%. Arthur Blackwood Senior and Emily Vance.

My heart pounded against my ribs like a sledgehammer. Emily wasn't just a random child who had wandered up my driveway during a blizzard. She wasn't just the daughter of a former employee.

She was my sister.

And Noah was her brother, whom she had protected with her life through a mountain storm.

I stood up slowly, the parchment held tightly in my grip, my eyes fixed on the door leading out into the foyer.

May you like

"Vance?" Arthur asked quietly, standing up beside me. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine, Arthur," I said, my voice thick with an emotion I hadn't felt in over a decade. "I finally know who I am protecting."
