Chapter 7 - The Little Guard

The morning air smelled of wet asphalt and fresh pine as Sophia walked across the cobblestone courtyard toward the east wing gardens.

In her hand, she carried a small wicker basket filled with fresh croissants and a jar of imported strawberry jam. Beside her, skipping along the edge of the stone pathway, Emma chased after Biscotti, who was darting through the low hedges with his tail twitching excitedly in the morning light.

"Mama! Look! A ladybug!" Emma squealed, stopping beside a blooming rosebush and pointing down at a red speck on a green leaf.

"I see it, sweetie," Sophia smiled, kneeling down to adjust the collar of Emma’s yellow cardigan. "Careful not to step on the petals."

"Can Uncle Lorenzo come play hide-and-seek with us today?" Emma asked, looking up with wide, hopeful eyes.

Sophia hesitated. Before today, the idea of the fearsome head of the Duca syndicate playing hide-and-seek on the lawn would have sounded like a surreal hallucination. But after last night—after seeing the tired, human exhaustion behind those cold gray eyes—she wasn't so sure anymore.

"Uncle Lorenzo is very busy today, honey," Sophia said gently, brushing a stray curl from Emma's forehead. "He has a lot of important papers to sign."

"He promised me another chocolate if I keep my scissors safe," Emma declared proudly, patting the pocket of her cardigan where the broken pink craft scissors—now wrapped neatly in a clean piece of blue ribbon—safely rested.

A low, gravelly chuckle rumbled from the shadow of the stone portico behind them.

Sophia turned her head.

Lorenzo stood at the edge of the terrace, leaning against a stone pillar with his hands in his trouser pockets. He wore a simple black cashmere sweater, the morning breeze rustling his silver-streaked hair. He didn't look like a crime lord standing here in the morning sunlight; he looked like a man who finally owned his own home.

"Did someone mention chocolate?" Lorenzo asked, stepping off the terrace and walking slowly down the cobblestone path toward them.

Emma’s face lit up with a gap-toothed grin. "Uncle Lorenzo!"

She bolted across the grass, running straight toward him. Lorenzo braced himself slightly, his left hand instinctively catching his side for a fraction of a second before he knelt down on one knee, opening his arms to catch the little girl as she threw herself into a clumsy, joyful hug.

Sophia stood up, watching them from the pathway, a profound sense of peace settling deep into her chest for the first time in seven years.

Lorenzo looked up over Emma’s shoulder, meeting Sophia’s eyes across the sunlit lawn.

There were no words exchanged—none were needed. The blood on the concrete was washed away, the traitor was locked in a hole, and the cold-storage cellar was locked tight.

In the heart of the most dangerous syndicate in Manhattan, a new order had taken root. Built not on gold, nor on bullets, nor on fear—but on a mother’s resolve, a stray orange cat, and the sharp, unbroken blade of a five-year-old’s pink craft scissors.
