Chapter 4 - The Resignation

At 9:00 AM sharp the following morning, the glass doors of Apex Capital’s executive suite on the forty-second floor parted to reveal Richard Vance and our senior legal counsel, Marcus Thorne, waiting in the sleek, minimalist boardroom.

I sat at the head of the obsidian conference table, wearing the same navy suit from the night before, though I hadn't slept a wink. My tie was loosened, my sleeves rolled up, and a thick manila folder rested squarely in front of me.

Richard strode into the room, his expression a mix of lingering annoyance and corporate urgency.

“Julian, what the hell was that stunt last night?” Richard demanded, tossing his leather portfolio onto the table. “We had Dallas locked down. Do you have any idea how much capital is riding on this handshake?”

“Sit down, Richard,” I said quietly.

Richard frowned, pulling out his chair and settling in. Marcus Thorne adjusted his glasses, sensing the strange tension in the air.

“Where’s the signed addendum?” Marcus asked, opening his briefcase.

I didn't pick up a pen. Instead, I pushed the manila folder across the table toward them.

Richard flipped it open. His eyes scanned the first page, and his professional composure vanished in an instant.

“An immediate resignation?” Richard barked, looking up at me as if I had grown a second head. “Are you out of your mind? You’re the managing partner! Apex wouldn't exist in its current form without your underwriting models!”

“I’m stepping down from active management, effective immediately,” I said, my voice steady, devoid of the aggressive ambition that had defined my entire adult life. “My equity shares will remain in the firm under a blind trust, and Marcus can take over my portfolio for the Dallas merger.”

“Julian, this is career suicide!” Richard slammed his hand on the table. “Over what? Some waitress in a River North steakhouse? Is that what this is about? Some late-night distraction—?”

“Watch your mouth, Richard,” I interrupted, standing up slowly from my chair. The quiet menace in my tone made both men recoil slightly. “You ever talk about her or my family like that again, and I will personally dismantle your real estate holdings before lunch.”

The room fell dead silent.

Marcus Thorne swallowed hard, pushing his glasses up his nose. “Julian... is there a legal complication? Paternity? Extortion?”

“No extortion, Marcus,” I said, buttoning my jacket. “Just reality.”

I picked up my phone from the table, powering it back on for the first time since the night before. Dozens of notifications cascaded across the screen—emails, missed calls, panicked texts from junior analysts. I swiped them all away, navigating to my banking app.

With a few quick taps, I authorized a wire transfer of five million dollars from my personal investment account into a newly created irrevocable trust fund, with two beneficiaries: Elizabeth Vance and Chloe Vance.

Then, I walked out of the boardroom, leaving the multi-million-dollar empire behind without a single backward glance.
