Part 5: The File That Vanished Overnight

I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Principal Warren..."
"Are you saying someone hid reports about my daughter?"
"Yes."
Her voice was steady, but I could hear the frustration underneath.
"I only became principal six months ago."
"I've been reviewing unresolved student cases."
"This afternoon, one of my administrative assistants discovered a locked filing cabinet in an old records room."
"And inside..."
She paused.
"...were multiple complaints involving Josephine."
I looked at Rebecca.
She had gone completely still.
"How many complaints?"
"I haven't finished counting."
"But there are far more than the three incidents officially documented in our system."
Rebecca whispered,
"I filed eleven reports."
Principal Warren heard her through the speaker.
"Mrs. Harris?"
"Yes."
"I've located at least eleven written complaints."
Rebecca closed her eyes.
"They told me some of them had been misplaced."
"I'm afraid..."
The principal sighed.
"They weren't misplaced."
"They were intentionally separated from the official student discipline files."
A cold anger settled over me.
Someone hadn't simply ignored our daughter.
Someone had buried the evidence.
"We need to meet."
I said.
"Tomorrow morning."
"I agree."
The principal hesitated.
"But I should warn you..."
"Warn me about what?"
"The students involved have influential families."
"I already know about Olivia Caldwell."
Silence.
Then Principal Warren quietly replied,
"It's more complicated than that."
Before she could explain...
Another voice interrupted her.
"Denise!"
Someone shouted in the background.
The principal sounded startled.
"I'll call you back."
The line went dead.
Rebecca frowned.
"That sounded strange."
I nodded.
"Very."
Something about the way her voice changed...
It wasn't just surprise.
It sounded like fear.
That night, I barely slept.
Around two in the morning, I walked downstairs for a glass of water.
As I passed Josephine's bedroom, I noticed light beneath the door.
I knocked softly.
"You awake?"
A moment later...
"Come in."
She was sitting at her desk.
Drawing.
The sketchbook lay open beneath a small lamp.
This time she wasn't drawing birds.
She was drawing trees.
Tall trees.
Dark woods.
A tiny path disappearing into the distance.
"You can't sleep?"
I asked.
She smiled faintly.
"I don't sleep much anymore."
My heart sank.
"Since when?"
She shrugged.
"I don't know."
"Months."
"Maybe longer."
I pulled up a chair.
"What are you thinking about?"
She kept shading the trees.
"I keep imagining what it'll feel like."
"What?"
"When this is over."
I waited.
She looked at the unfinished drawing.
"I don't even remember what normal feels like."
Those words hit me harder than anything else she'd said.
My fifteen-year-old daughter couldn't remember a life without fear.
The next morning...
Rebecca and I drove to Oak Ridge High School together.
Josephine sat silently in the back seat.
She hadn't wanted to come.
"I don't want everyone staring."
"They won't."
I promised.
Although...
I wasn't sure that was true.
Principal Denise Warren met us outside her office.
She looked tired.
Dark circles framed her eyes.
She shook our hands firmly.
"Thank you for coming."
She looked at Josephine.
"I'm sorry."
Josephine blinked.
"For what?"
"For failing you."
No school administrator had ever said those words before.
Josephine didn't know how to respond.
Neither did I.
Inside the office...
Three thick folders rested on the conference table.
Principal Warren opened the first one.
"These are the official reports."
Only four documents.
She opened the second.
"These were hidden."
Eleven more.
Rebecca quietly counted.
"Every complaint I submitted."
The principal nodded.
"And there's another folder."
She hesitated before opening it.
"This one concerns other students."
Inside were reports from six different families.
Six.
Not one.
Not two.
Six students had reported harassment involving the same group of girls.
I stared at the names.
Different victims.
Same aggressors.
Olivia Caldwell.
Emma Brooks.
Savannah Pierce.
Madison Lee.
Again and again...
The same four names appeared.
Principal Warren folded her hands.
"This wasn't bullying."
She looked directly at us.
"It was an organized pattern."
Josephine whispered,
"They picked one person every year."
The principal looked surprised.
"You knew?"
Josephine nodded.
"When they got bored..."
"They found someone new."
The room became silent.
"I've already contacted the district superintendent."
Principal Warren continued.
"And an independent investigator."
Rebecca looked hopeful.
"So something's finally happening?"
"Yes."
The principal answered.
"But..."
She looked toward the office window.
"I think someone knows I've reopened these files."
At that exact moment...
A loud knock echoed through the office door.
A secretary rushed inside.
Her face was pale.
"Principal Warren..."
"What is it?"
"The records room..."
She struggled to catch her breath.
"...someone broke in last night."
The principal stood immediately.
"What?"
"The filing cabinet was forced open."
Rebecca looked at the folders.
"But these are here."
The secretary nodded.
"Only because you took them home."
Principal Warren's expression hardened.
"What was stolen?"
The secretary swallowed.
"Only one file."
Silence.
"Which one?"
The answer made every person in the room freeze.
"Olivia Caldwell's disciplinary record."
Someone hadn't come to destroy all the evidence.
They had known exactly which file to take.
May you like
And whoever had broken into the school...
Already knew the investigation had begun.
