Chapter 9: The Names They Stole

Every weapon in the room rose at once.

"FBI!"

"Don't move!"

The elderly man didn't flinch.

He stood beneath the harsh white lights of the underground bunker with one hand resting on the silver handle of his cane, looking more like a retired university professor than the architect of thirty years of deception.

Marissa remained seated.

She didn't scream.

She didn't run.

She simply looked at me with eyes full of exhaustion.

"I'm sorry, Ethan."

Those three words hurt more than every lie that had come before them.

Agent Rebecca Collins stepped forward.

"Hands where I can see them."

The old man slowly lifted both hands.

"You've been looking for the wrong person for decades."

Officer Jackson kept his pistol trained on him.

"Name."

The man smiled.

"My real one?"

"Yes."

He nodded thoughtfully.

"I suppose you've earned that much."

He looked directly at me.

"My name is..."

He paused.

"...Edward Cross."

The name meant nothing to me.

But beside me, Agent Collins suddenly went pale.

"No..."

Daniel looked at her.

"You know him?"

She whispered,

"I've been reading that name for ten years."

Collins never lowered her weapon.

"Edward Cross was the accountant."

The old man smiled.

"Chief accountant."

"The one who disappeared after the yacht fire."

He inclined his head politely.

"I preferred the word promoted."

I stared at him.

"You killed Victor Hawthorne."

"No."

Edward answered immediately.

"I found him already dying."

The room remained silent.

"He wasn't murdered?"

Edward shook his head.

"The yacht explosion was an accident."

He smiled faintly.

"But accidents create opportunities."

He began walking slowly across the room.

No one interrupted him.

"Victor Hawthorne built an empire."

"He also built enemies."

"When the yacht exploded..."

"...everyone assumed no one could identify the body."

He tapped his cane lightly against the floor.

"So I identified it myself."

Daniel frowned.

"You switched identities."

Edward nodded.

"The real Victor died."

"I became him."

Agent Collins looked disgusted.

"You stole a dead man's life."

Edward shrugged.

"I improved it."

Officer Jackson spoke next.

"What about Thomas Mercer?"

"My father."

Edward's smile faded.

"He was the only person who suspected the truth."

My pulse quickened.

"So that's why you hunted him."

"Yes."

"But your father was remarkably intelligent."

He looked almost respectful.

"He never managed to prove who I really was."

"But he came close."

Marissa finally stood.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Her wound still forced her to move with obvious pain.

"Ethan..."

I looked at her.

"There really is something I never told you."

I almost laughed.

"There are still things?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"Too many."

Edward looked almost amused.

"Go ahead."

"Tell him."

Marissa closed her eyes.

"My name..."

She swallowed.

"...isn't Marissa Mercer."

The words landed softly.

Yet somehow they echoed louder than gunfire.

I felt the room begin to spin.

"What?"

"My legal name is Marissa."

She looked directly at me.

"But it isn't the name I was born with."

Daniel slowly lowered the file he had been holding.

"You were adopted."

She nodded.

"When I was six."

Officer Jackson frowned.

"Then your birth name?"

Marissa whispered it.

"Anna Cross."

Silence.

Every person in the bunker slowly turned toward Edward.

He smiled.

"There."

"Now everyone finally understands."

I stared at him.

"You're..."

"My biological father."

He answered calmly.

Marissa shook her head violently.

"No."

"You donated blood."

"You never became a father."

Edward chuckled.

"Still stubborn."

Agent Collins interrupted.

"Why hide her identity?"

Edward's expression changed.

"For survival."

"No."

Marissa answered before he could continue.

"For control."

She looked at me.

"When I was little..."

"...he taught me that every relationship was a transaction."

She laughed bitterly.

"He even kept notebooks ranking people."

I remembered the ledger.

LOYAL.

UNRELIABLE.

CONTROLLED.

ELIMINATE.

She had lived inside that system.

"I ran away when I was sixteen."

She continued.

"A judge arranged a sealed adoption."

"That's how I became Marissa Hale."

Daniel frowned.

"Hale?"

She nodded.

"I changed it again after we married."

"So Mercer..."

She smiled sadly.

"...was the only name I ever chose."

My anger began dissolving into something far more complicated.

"You married me because..."

"Because I loved you."

"No."

Edward laughed.

"You married him because I ordered you to."

Marissa turned toward him.

"No."

"I met Ethan because of you."

She nodded once.

"But every day after that..."

"...was my own decision."

Edward sighed dramatically.

"Romance."

He shook his head.

"Always so inefficient."

Agent Collins signaled two FBI agents.

"Cuff him."

They stepped forward.

Edward didn't resist.

Instead...

He looked at me.

"You're wondering why I let all this happen."

I didn't answer.

"You think I lost."

Another smile.

"I never gamble unless I already know the outcome."

Daniel suddenly froze.

"Ethan."

"What?"

"The servers."

I looked around.

Rows of computer towers filled the underground room.

Each displayed blinking green lights.

Daniel's face lost all color.

"They're copying data."

Collins immediately understood.

"Oh, no."

Edward smiled wider.

"The ledger wasn't my weakness."

"It was my backup."

He looked toward the nearest monitor.

"Everything you've found..."

"...has already been transmitted."

"To whom?"

He answered simply.

"Everyone."

Screens across the room suddenly came alive.

Emails.

Encrypted files.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Videos.

Automatic upload bars climbed toward one hundred percent.

Every secret organization.

Every hidden payment.

Every politician.

Every judge.

Every executive.

Thousands of files were leaving the bunker.

Agent Collins shouted,

"Disconnect the servers!"

Technicians rushed forward.

Too late.

Ninety-eight percent.

Ninety-nine.

One hundred.

The screens went dark.

Edward laughed for the first time.

Not loudly.

Just enough to send a chill through the room.

"You wanted the truth."

"There it goes."

Officer Jackson slammed him against the wall.

"Who received those files?"

Edward smiled through the pain.

"The press."

"The FBI."

"The Securities Commission."

"The Justice Department."

"Foreign governments."

He looked at me.

"And every major news organization in America."

Collins stared at the dead monitors.

Within seconds...

Phones throughout the bunker began vibrating.

One after another.

Emergency alerts.

Breaking news notifications.

Calls from headquarters.

The first headline appeared on Jackson's screen.

LEAK EXPOSES DECADES OF CORPORATE AND GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION

Then another.

MULTIPLE SENIOR OFFICIALS RESIGN AFTER MASSIVE DOCUMENT DUMP

Another.

FBI CONFIRMS NATIONWIDE ARREST WARRANTS

Daniel looked around the room in disbelief.

"It's happening."

Edward quietly straightened his suit despite the handcuffs.

"I told you."

"I don't lose."

I looked at him.

"You've destroyed yourself."

He smiled.

"No."

"I've destroyed everyone."

Then...

For the first time...

Marissa walked toward him.

She stopped only inches away.

He looked almost proud.

"My daughter."

She stared into his eyes.

"No."

She slowly removed the wedding ring I had picked up in the hospital.

Then she placed it back on her own finger.

"My name..."

She looked at me.

"...is Marissa Mercer."

She turned back to Edward.

"I chose it."

"I choose it again."

"And from this moment forward..."

"...you don't get to decide who I am."

For the first time since we met him...

Edward Cross stopped smiling.

Because after a lifetime of controlling names...

The one person he believed he owned had finally become completely beyond his reach.

And outside the bunker...

May you like

Across the country...

The world was already beginning to change forever.
