PART 5 — The Man Outside the Gate

Clara didn't notice the pickup truck parked beneath the old oak trees across the road.
Its faded blue paint blended almost perfectly with the shadows.
The engine had been turned off for nearly an hour.
Inside sat a man in his late fifties wearing a worn denim jacket and a weathered cowboy hat.
His name was Victor Salazar.
He wasn't a thief.
He wasn't a police officer.
And he wasn't there by accident.
He had been driving past the Navarro house every few weeks for nearly fifteen years.
Always hoping.
Always wondering if someone would finally buy it.
When he saw smoke rising from the chimney three days earlier, he knew the house was no longer empty.
Today, he had watched the young pregnant woman disappear into the attic.
Then he had seen her emerge with tears streaming down her face.
Victor whispered to himself.
"So..."
"You found it."
He didn't approach immediately.
Instead, he waited until sunset.
Only after Clara lit the oil lamp inside the kitchen did he walk slowly toward the front porch.
Three gentle knocks echoed through the quiet evening.
Clara looked up from her bowl of vegetable soup.
Her heart skipped.
Almost no one visited after dark.
She cautiously opened the door.
The older man removed his hat.
"I'm sorry to disturb you."
"My name is Victor Salazar."
"I live about five miles from here."
Clara relaxed slightly.
"Can I help you?"
Victor hesitated.
Then his eyes drifted toward the attic window.
"You found something today."
Her body instantly stiffened.
"I... don't know what you mean."
"I wasn't spying."
He smiled sadly.
"I've simply been waiting for this day."
For several long seconds, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Clara asked quietly,
"Who are you?"
Victor took a slow breath.
"I was Miguel Navarro's apprentice."
The words froze her in place.
"You knew Miguel?"
"I worked beside him for twelve years."
"I was twenty when he taught me how to repair antique watches."
His eyes filled with old memories.
"He treated me like a son."
Clara slowly opened the door wider.
"Please..."
"Come inside."
The kitchen was humble.
Two wooden chairs.
A cracked table.
A single oil lamp.
Victor looked around and smiled.
"It already feels different."
"What do you mean?"
"The house."
"It isn't lonely anymore."
Clara lowered her eyes.
"I've been trying."
"I can tell."
She placed Elena's letter carefully on the table.
Victor recognized the handwriting immediately.
His hands began trembling.
"I never thought I'd see this again."
"You've seen it before?"
"No."
"But Miguel told me he was writing it."
Victor stared at the envelope for a long time before looking back at Clara.
"Did you read everything?"
She nodded.
"I know about the hidden room."
"I know the treasure belongs to other families."
Victor closed his eyes.
"Then Elena kept her promise."
He remained silent for several moments.
Finally he spoke.
"The town believes Miguel died in an accident."
"It wasn't an accident."
"I know."
Clara whispered.
"The letter told me."
Victor nodded slowly.
"I was the last person to see him alive."
Clara's eyes widened.
Victor leaned back in his chair.
"The night before he died, Miguel asked me to meet him in his workshop."
"He looked exhausted."
"He hadn't slept in days."
"He showed me a notebook."
"What kind of notebook?"
"A ledger."
"It contained every transaction."
"Every stolen jewel."
"Every corrupt official who helped move them."
"The evidence?"
Victor nodded.
"He said..."
Victor's voice cracked.
"'If anything happens to me, the truth must survive.'"
"What happened the next day?"
Clara asked quietly.
Victor stared into the lamp flame.
"He never arrived at work."
"By noon..."
"They found his body near the river."
"The police ruled it a robbery."
"But nothing had been stolen."
"The only thing missing..."
"...was the ledger."
Clara felt a chill run through her.
"If the ledger disappeared..."
Victor slowly looked toward the ceiling.
"Then maybe..."
"It's still here."
Both of them turned toward the attic.
The hidden chamber suddenly seemed even more mysterious.
Clara frowned.
"There wasn't any ledger."
"Are you sure?"
"I searched every shelf."
Victor thought carefully.
"Miguel trusted almost no one."
"If he hid the treasure..."
"He probably hid the evidence somewhere else."
"A second hiding place?"
"Perhaps."
Just then...
A loud engine roared outside.
Headlights swept across the front windows.
Both Clara and Victor froze.
Another vehicle stopped beside the road.
Then another.
Three black SUVs.
The engines remained running.
Victor's face drained of color.
"Oh no..."
"What is it?"
"They found the house."
Clara's heart pounded.
"Who?"
Victor stood so quickly his chair fell backward.
"The Salgado family."
"The merchants Miguel exposed."
"They're still alive."
"And if they're here..."
"They know someone finally uncovered Elena's secret."
Heavy footsteps approached the porch.
One.
Two.
Three.
Then—
BANG!
A fist struck the front door.
Another blow followed.
A deep male voice echoed through the night.
"Open the door!"
"We know someone is inside!"
Clara instinctively placed both hands over her pregnant belly.
Victor whispered urgently,
"Don't answer."
The knocking grew louder.
"Mrs. Mendoza!"
Clara's blood turned cold.
They knew her name.
"Open the door."
"We only want to talk."
Victor shook his head.
"No..."
"They never come to talk."
Outside...
A fourth SUV slowly rolled through the gate.
Its headlights illuminated the old apple tree.
One of the men stepped out holding an old photograph.
He compared it with the house before smiling.
"They found it."
Inside the kitchen, Clara realized something terrifying.
Elena's greatest fear...
Had survived for fifteen years.
And now...
May you like
It had come looking for her.
