Chapter 6 - The Execution

The takedown occurred on a crisp Friday afternoon in downtown Manhattan, perfectly timed to coincide with the close of the financial markets.

Daniel Price and Jonathan Sterling had chosen an upscale steakhouse on Madison Avenue to celebrate their anticipated windfall. They had booked a private corner booth, ordered top-shelf scotch, and were undoubtedly congratulating themselves on their cleverness.

They hadn't noticed the two men in dark suits sitting at the adjacent table reading the Wall Street Journal.

Nor had they noticed the federal marshals stationed discreetly by the front entrance.

At exactly 4:15 PM, Arthur Vance and I walked through the heavy glass doors of the restaurant, flanked by Dante and two federal agents from the United States Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York.

The ambient noise of the dining room instantly died down as people recognized me. Heads turned, silver forks froze halfway to open mouths.

We walked straight toward the private corner booth.

Daniel Price looked up, his glass of scotch halfway to his mouth. The smug, triumphant grin on his face froze into a mask of absolute bewilderment as he saw me standing over him.

“Moretti?” Daniel stammered, standing up awkwardly from the leather banquette. “What is the meaning of this? We were supposed to communicate through—through legal channels—”

“You communicated,” I said, my voice cutting through the silence of the room like a razor blade. “And now it’s time for the reply.”

Jonathan Sterling stood up beside him, his face draining of all color as he recognized the badges pinned to the lapels of the men standing behind me.

“Mr. Moretti, this is highly irregular—” Sterling started, his voice cracking. “We are private counsel representing a biological father in family court matters—this is a civil custody dispute—!”

“A civil custody dispute doesn't involve an offshore Cayman Islands account funded by a one-point-five-million-dollar extortion demand wired via interstate commerce,” Vance chimed in, stepping forward and tossing a thick dossier of certified wire receipts, encrypted emails, and audio transcripts directly onto their untouched steaks.

Sterling looked down at the documents. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse. He knew instantly that the game was over. The trap had snapped shut with mathematical perfection.

“Daniel Price,” one of the federal agents announced loudly, stepping forward and clamping steel handcuffs around Price’s wrists with a sharp, metallic click. “You are under arrest for extortion, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit interstate financial coercion.”

“Wait—no! You can't do this! I’m her father!” Price shrieked, thrashing wildly as the agent forced him down against the table, scattering crystal glasses and silverware across the floor. “Sterling! Do something! Get my lawyer!”

“I am his lawyer, and I suggest you shut your mouth,” Sterling muttered, his hands trembling violently as two more agents stepped in to cuff him as well for his role as the legal mastermind behind the shakedown.

As they dragged Price and Sterling toward the exit in handcuffs, the restaurant was dead silent.

I stood by the table, looking down at the scattered steak plates and the spilled scotch. I picked up the printed ransom note that had fallen from Sterling’s jacket pocket, folded it neatly, and slipped it into my breast pocket.

“Have their licenses revoked by the state bar before Monday morning, Arthur,” I instructed Vance quietly.

“Consider it done,” Vance replied.
