Chapter 9 - The New Foundation

Three weeks after their return to Manhattan, the autumn chill deepened into the first sharp bite of winter.
The Moretti estate on the Upper East Side had undergone a transformation that was subtle, yet profound. The silent, suffocating aura of Nero Marquina marble and rigid security had been replaced by a warmth that seeped into every corner of the house.
In the grand drawing room on the second floor, a massive fire crackled in the stone fireplace.
Sophia sat on a plush velvet sofa, wrapped in a cream-colored cashmere sweater, her lap covered in architectural blueprints for the renovation of the estate's west wing—a space being converted into a nursery, a playroom, and a bright, sunlit art studio.
She was no longer the maid. She wore a simple platinum band on her left ring finger—a temporary place-holder while Dominic had a custom ring designed in Milan—and her presence in the house was now that of its mistress.
Down on the rug near the hearth, Lily was busily constructing a high-rise tower out of wooden blocks, with Marco Bellini sitting cross-legged beside her, carefully handing her the rectangular pieces.
"No, Uncle Marco," Lily instructed bossily, pushing his hand away. "The red ones go on the bottom so it doesn't fall down!"
Marco—a man who had spent thirty years enforcing territorial boundaries in the New York underworld—meekly retracted his hand. "Right. Sorry, Lily. Red on the bottom. Structural integrity."
Sophia laughed softly, setting her blueprints aside. "Marco, you really don't have to let her boss you around like that."
Marco looked up, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. "Ms. Sophia, with all due respect, I'd rather take orders from her than face your husband if she starts crying because her tower collapsed."
The heavy double doors of the drawing room opened, and Dominic walked in.
He was dressed in his signature three-piece dark suit, fresh from a board meeting downtown, but the cold, severe distance that had defined him for decades was gone. His eyes immediately sought out Sophia, softening the moment they locked onto her face.
He walked over to the sofa, leaned down, and pressed a deep, lingering kiss to her lips, his hand resting gently against her cheek.
"How was your day?" Sophia asked softly, her fingers brushing against his tie.
"Tedious," Dominic replied, sitting beside her and drawing her close against his side. "The shipping union attempted to raise their rates by eight percent."
"What happened?"
"I introduced them to Marco's legal team," Dominic said dryly. "They reconsidered and offered a five percent discount instead."
He looked down at Lily, who was jumping up and down near his knees.
"Mr. Moretti! Look!" Lily pointed proudly at her finished wooden tower, which stood four feet high near the fireplace. "It's big like your house!"
Dominic looked at the tower, then looked at Marco, who gave a sharp nod of pride.
"It is a very strong tower, Lily," Dominic agreed. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, flat box wrapped in gold foil. "I brought you something from the city."
Lily’s eyes turned into saucers. She snatched the box, tearing open the paper to reveal a small, silver button eye on a spool of thick thread, along with a tiny pair of red leather boots designed for stuffed rabbits.
"For Mr. Whiskers," Dominic explained calmly. "So his claws do not fall off again."
Lily let out a squeal of absolute delight, throwing her arms around Dominic’s neck, almost knocking his expensive silk tie askew. "Thank you, Dominic!"
Dominic held the small child securely, his thick arm wrapping around her back, a look of profound, quiet contentment settling over his features.
Sophia watched them, her hand resting over Dominic's knee, feeling a deep, unshakeable sense of peace settle into her bones.

Her mother had passed away peacefully two days after the wedding, slipping away in her sleep while holding Henry's hand, surrounded by the scent of dry roses and farm air. She had died knowing her daughter was safe, loved, and protected.
And here, in the heart of Manhattan, inside the fortress of a former mafia boss, Sophia had found a home that no storm could ever destroy.
