Part 3

Adrian stood frozen in the middle of my hospital room.
For the first time since I had met him, he had no clever response.
No sarcastic smile.
No perfect sentence prepared to make himself look superior.
Just silence.
Celeste looked between us, confused.
“Adrian,” she whispered, “tell me this isn’t true.”
He ignored her.
His eyes stayed on me.
“Evelyn… you knew?”
I looked at him.
“About what?”
His face tightened.
“About the company. About the money. About everything.”
I adjusted the blanket around my son.
“No.”
That answer surprised him.
“No?” he repeated.
I shook my head.
“I didn’t know because I never cared.”
My father glanced at me.
I continued.
“I loved you when I thought you had nothing. I built a life with you because I believed you were kind, loyal, and ambitious.”
My voice became quieter.
“But you spent five years proving the only person you loved was yourself.”
Adrian flinched.
Celeste suddenly stepped forward.
“You lied to me.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
She laughed bitterly.
“You told me you were leaving a wife who depended on you. You told me you were sacrificing everything for us.”
Her eyes moved toward the documents.
“You never told me she owned the company.”
The room changed.
Because for the first time, Adrian wasn’t the person controlling the story.
He was the one being exposed.
“Celeste,” he warned.
“No.”
She pulled the ring box from her purse and threw it onto the chair.
“You promised me a penthouse. A new life. A future.”
She looked at him with disgust.
“You didn’t even know the woman you were trying to destroy was the reason you had everything.”
Adrian’s face turned red.
“You’re overreacting.”
My father gave a quiet laugh.
“Interesting.”
Adrian looked at him.
My father continued.
“You said the same thing when we investigated the private transfers.”
Adrian froze.
“What transfers?”
My mother opened another file.
“Money moved from company accounts. Luxury purchases. Gifts.”
She looked at Celeste.
“The Birkin bag was paid for with company funds.”
Celeste’s expression changed.
“No…”
My mother placed the evidence down.
“Everything is documented.”
Adrian suddenly looked nervous.
“Evelyn, listen.”
I almost smiled.
Listen.
That was the word he used when he wanted forgiveness without consequences.
“I’m listening,” I said.
He stepped closer.
“I made a mistake.”
My father immediately moved between us.
“No.”
Adrian looked angry.
“This is between me and my wife.”
My father’s expression hardened.
“You lost the right to call her that when you walked into a hospital room after she gave birth to your children and humiliated her.”
The words hit harder than any argument.
Because they were true.
Adrian looked at the bassinets.
Our three sons slept peacefully.
Three tiny lives he had barely looked at.
“I want custody,” he suddenly said.
Everyone stared.
I felt my chest tighten.
Of course.
Even now.
Even after everything.
He wasn’t sorry.
He was afraid of losing control.
My mother opened another document.
“Good timing.”
Adrian narrowed his eyes.
“What is that?”
“The custody evaluation request.”
His confidence returned slightly.
“Exactly. The court will see that I’m their father.”
My mother nodded.
“Yes.”
Then she turned the page.
“And they will also see the hospital security footage.”
His face changed.
The room became silent.
My mother continued.
“The footage of you entering with your mistress.”
Another page.
“The audio recording of you insulting Evelyn immediately after childbirth.”
Adrian swallowed.
“You recorded me?”
“No,” my father said.
“The hospital did.”
Adrian looked at me.
Not with anger.
With fear.
Because he finally understood.
Every cruel thing he had done had created evidence.
“You wanted to make her look weak,” my father said.
“But you documented your own cruelty.”
Adrian’s phone rang again.
This time, he didn’t answer.
It kept ringing.
My father looked at the screen.
“Your board members.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“They can wait.”
My father shook his head.
“No, they can’t.”
A pause.
“They’re removing you permanently.”
Adrian stared at him.
“What?”
My father picked up his folder.
“Adrian Vale built a company on the image of being a brilliant businessman.”
He looked directly at him.
“But a man who destroys his own family for appearances is not a leader.”
Celeste quietly walked toward the door.
Adrian noticed.
“Where are you going?”
She didn’t turn around.
“Somewhere your name doesn’t follow me.”
The door closed behind her.
And for the first time in five years…
Adrian was alone.
He looked at me.
The woman he thought had lost everything.
The woman lying in a hospital bed with three newborn babies.
The woman he called worthless.
His voice cracked.
“Evelyn… what happens now?”
I looked at my sons.
Then back at him.
“Now?”
I picked up the divorce papers.
The same papers he threw at me.
I signed the first page.
Adrian smiled faintly.
Until he saw what I wrote underneath.
I agree to divorce.
But I reject every demand for my property, my children, and my future.
I placed the pen down.
“Now you learn what it feels like to lose everything you thought you owned.”
And two weeks later…
May you like
Adrian discovered the biggest secret my parents had kept from him.
The company wasn’t the only thing I inherited.
