Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Guests

At 5:45 AM, the storm outside had begun to subside, leaving a thick blanket of pristine white snow over the city. Inside the hospital room, a nurse brought in a tray of warm breakfast for Emma, who was looking significantly better, though the deep emotional shock still hovered behind her blue eyes.

"David," she said softly, watching me lace up my boots and pull on a charcoal sweater. "What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to pick up our house," I replied, standing up and checking my phone. A text from Sarah had just arrived:

FEDERAL INJUNCTION GRANTED. ASSET FREEZE ACTIVE. SHERIFF DEPT NOTIFIED.

"Please be careful," Emma whispered. "They... they were so mean, David. Caleb threatened to call child protective services on me if I didn't leave quietly."

I walked over, took her face in my hands, and kissed her gently. "They will never threaten you or Lily again. I promise you that. Stay here with Lily until I call you. The security team I hired will be standing outside your door in ten minutes."

I left the hospital and drove my rental SUV through the freshly plowed streets toward my neighborhood.

Meanwhile, inside my estate, the morning was beginning quite differently.

At 6:00 AM sharp, Marcus executed the remote firmware override on my home's central operating system.

Inside the master bedroom, the smart thermostat instantly shut off the radiant floor heating and set the interior temperature targets to 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Simultaneously, the smart glass windows in the master suite shifted from opaque to completely transparent, letting in the harsh glare of the morning snow.

Arthur Vance groaned, pulling the down duvet over his head as cold air began circulating through the vents. "Eleanor, why is it freezing in here? Did you mess with the thermostat?"

"I didn't touch anything!" Eleanor grumbled, shivering as she sat up in my king-sized bed. "It's probably just a draft from that stupid storm."

Downstairs in the kitchen, Caleb stumbled out of the guest room, clutching his head from a massive hangover. He walked over to the high-end espresso machine, inserted a pod, and hit start.

Nothing happened.

The digital display on the appliance flashed red, displaying a short message: DEVICE RECALLED / ACCESS DENIED.

"What the hell?" Caleb muttered, kicking the kitchen island. He pulled out his phone to check his bank app, intending to order breakfast delivery. When he opened his mobile banking application, a bright red banner flashed across the screen:

ACCOUNT SUSPENDED. CONTACT FEDERAL ASSET MANAGEMENT IMMEDIATELY.

Panic flickered in Caleb's eyes. He quickly opened his second account—the one holding the stolen Apex Shield funds.

BALANCE: $0.00 [ACCOUNT FROZEN BY COURT ORDER].

"Dad!" Caleb screamed, running up the grand staircase. "Dad! Wake up! Something's wrong with the accounts!"

Arthur rushed down the hallway in his bathrobe, holding his phone. "What are you shouting about? I'm getting alerts from my business manager! My line of credit was revoked ten minutes ago!"

Before they could figure out what was happening, the loud sound of heavy mechanical locks snapping shut echoed throughout the multi-million-dollar house.

Every automated exterior door—front, side, garage, and patio—engaged heavy steel deadbolts. The iron driveway security gates at the front of the property swung shut and locked firmly into place. The home's high-speed Wi-Fi network vanished, replaced by a single local network SSID that read: APEX_FORENSIC_TRAP_ACTIVE.

"What is going on?!" Eleanor shrieked, running down the stairs in her silk robe. "Did the house get hacked?!"

Outside the iron driveway gates, a fleet of four vehicles pulled up through the snow.

First was my black rental SUV. Behind me were two marked County Sheriff cruisers with flashing red and blue lights, followed by a black sedan carrying my corporate legal counsel and two private forensic investigators.

I stepped out of the vehicle into the crisp morning air. Sheriff Thomas, a stern man with twenty years of law enforcement experience whom Sarah had briefed personally, walked up beside me.

"Mr. Vance," Sheriff Thomas said, holding a thick legal folder containing the signed federal injunctions and eviction orders. "We've reviewed the digital signature logs, the hospital medical reports for your wife and daughter, and the forged Quitclaim files. This is one of the most brazen domestic seizures I've seen in my career."

"They thought I wouldn't come back in time," I said calmly. "Let's go take back my property."

I walked up to the iron gate, pulled out my primary master key fob, and tapped it against the scanner. The heavy iron gates creaked open, allowing the police cruisers and my vehicle to roll up the long, tree-lined driveway.

Inside the house, Caleb looked out the floor-to-ceiling living room windows and froze.

"Dad..." Caleb stammered, his voice turning high-pitched with terror. "It's David. And... and he brought the police."

Arthur’s face turned bright red with rage. "He brought the police to my house? Who does he think he is?! I am his father! I made him!"

Arthur stormed toward the front door, slamming his hand against the digital release button. The screen remained dark. He pulled frantically on the manual override lever, forcing the door open just as Sheriff Thomas, two deputies, and I walked up the porch steps.

"David!" Arthur shouted, putting his hands on his hips and trying to puff out his chest. "What is the meaning of this circus?! How dare you bring law enforcement to this family matter!"

I stood on the porch, looking down at my father. He looked smaller than I remembered, his posture driven by fake arrogance, his eyes betraying a deep, frantic panic.

"This isn't a family matter anymore, Arthur," I said, my voice dead set and calm. "This is a crime scene."
