Chapter 3 - THE GENETIC LIE

The room plunged into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Eleanor’s smug smile withered away, replaced by a sudden, nervous twitch at the corner of her tight lips. Julian scoffed, though the color had visibly drained from his ears.

“That’s absurd,” Julian said, forcing a nervous chuckle. “What kind of fairy-tale nonsense are you talking about? Vivian was my wife! Of course the child is mine! She’s trying to play some sick game with you!”

“I’m not playing any game,” I whispered, staring up at Julian with wide eyes, my mind racing at a terrifying speed. “I never touched another man, Julian. Never. You know that!”

“Then the doctor is insane!” Eleanor shouted, stepping forward and reaching aggressively for the baby. “Give me that child this instant!”

“Touch this baby, Mrs. Vance, and I will have hospital security place you under arrest for attempted child abduction!” Dr. Harrison barked, putting his body between Eleanor and the bed. He tapped the wall intercom and spoke clearly into the microphone. “Security to Delivery Room Four immediately. Code Pink alert.”

“Are you out of your mind?!” Julian roared, slamming his fist onto the stainless-steel tray table. “I will ruin you, doctor! I will tear this hospital down brick by brick!”

“You can try,” Dr. Harrison said coldly, his voice remarkably steady now. “But science doesn't care about your money or your lawyers, Julian. As a certified medical examiner and head of pediatrics at this facility, I am legally required to log all genetic anomalies upon delivery. This baby carries a unique genetic sequence that could only come from a specific paternal line—a line connected to my family’s direct genetic heritage.”

Dr. Harrison looked down at me, his eyes softening with deep emotion and profound pity.

“Vivian,” Dr. Harrison asked gently, “did you ever undergo fertility treatments or procedures while you were married to Julian?”

My heart stopped.

A wave of terrible, hidden memories came crashing back into my mind.

Four years into my marriage with Julian, after months of trying to conceive without success, Eleanor had insisted I visit a private, high-end reproductive clinic in Beverly Hills owned by a close personal friend of the Vance family—Dr. Arthur Sterling.

I remembered the cold operating room. I remembered being told that Julian’s sample had been collected privately in another room. I remembered being given a heavy sedative that made me lose consciousness for hours. A month later, the clinic had informed us that the procedure had failed, and that my body was "unsuited" for carrying a pregnancy. We hadn't tried again.

When I became pregnant naturally nine months ago—just weeks before Julian demanded a divorce—I had assumed it was a miraculous, natural conception from our dying marriage.

“The Beverly Hills Reproductive Center...” I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical bomb. “Four years ago... Dr. Sterling...”

Julian’s face went completely red. He lunged forward, grabbing Dr. Harrison by the lapels of his white coat. “Shut up! Shut your mouth right now!”

Heavy footsteps thundered down the hallway outside. Three tall, uniformed hospital security officers burst through the double doors, their hands resting on their belts.

“Is there a problem here, Dr. Harrison?” the lead officer asked, taking in the chaotic scene.

“These two individuals are harassing a patient in recovery and attempting to unlawfully remove an infant without medical authorization,” Dr. Harrison said, not flinching despite Julian holding his coat. “Escort them off the premises immediately.”

“You can't do this!” Eleanor shrieked as an officer stepped between her and the bed, grabbing her elbow firmly. “Do you know who I am?! I will call the Chief of Police! I will call the Mayor!”

“Step outside, ma'am,” the officer commanded, forcing Eleanor toward the hallway.

Julian let go of Dr. Harrison’s coat, breathing heavily, his eyes wild and desperate. He pointed a shaking finger at me.

“This isn't over, Vivian!” Julian snarled, his voice cracking with rage. “You think you’re smart? You think this old doctor is going to save you? You’re broke! You have nothing! By tomorrow morning, every lawyer in this city will be working for me! I will destroy you!”

“Get him out,” Dr. Harrison ordered coldly.

The security guards seized Julian’s arms, dragging him backward through the double doors. His furious curses echoed down the long, quiet hallway until the heavy doors swung shut, leaving only the soft humming of the fluorescent lights.

The room went quiet again.

I lay on the bed, my body shivering violently, overwhelmed by fear, confusion, and exhaustion.

Dr. Harrison carefully walked over, gently setting my newborn son down onto my bare chest. The warmth of his tiny body hit my skin, and his small, soft hand opened, his tiny fingers curling around my thumb.

Tears spilled freely down my cheeks. I pulled my baby close, burying my face in the soft blanket.

“What happened to me, Dr. Harrison?” I sobbed. “Whose baby is this? If he isn't Julian’s... how is he mine?”

Dr. Harrison sat down in the vinyl chair beside my bed, looking at me with a solemn, determined expression.

“Four years ago at that clinic,” Dr. Harrison said quietly, “something deeply illegal and unethical took place. Julian Vance didn't want a child with you, Vivian. But someone else’s genetic material was used—specifically, a preserved sample from my family’s biological line that was stored at that exact Beverly Hills facility after my son passed away.”

He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a fierce whisper.

“Julian Vance didn't just abandon you, Vivian,” Dr. Harrison said. “He and his mother used that clinic to commit fraud. And tomorrow morning, we are going to burn their entire world to the ground.”
