Chapter 4 - The Truth Unveiled

The white walls of the hospital room were quiet, save for the rhythmic, soothing beep of the heart monitor.
I sat in a wooden chair beside the bed, holding Claire's hand between both of mine. Her fingers were warm again, wrapped in soft bandages to treat the frostbite bite on her skin. An IV line ran into her forearm, pumping fluids and pain medication into her frail system.
It was 4:00 a.m.
The door opened softly, and Dr. Harrison walked in, holding a medical clipboard. He looked at me with deep sympathy.
"She's stabilized, Captain Vance," Dr. Harrison said softly. "Her core body temperature is back to normal, and fortunately, we managed to reverse the frostbite on her feet before permanent tissue damage occurred. However..."
My grip on Claire's hand tightened. "However what, Doctor?"
"She shows signs of severe long-term physical neglect and chronic emotional stress," Dr. Harrison explained, reading from his notes. "Her bloodwork indicates severe malnutrition. She has lost over twenty-five pounds in the last six months alone. And the bruising on her wrists... those aren't fresh from tonight. Those are layered bruises, meaning she was physically restrained multiple times over the past few weeks."
A wave of hot rage coursed through my veins, but I forced myself to stay calm for Claire.
"Thank you, Doctor," I murmured. "Please make sure every single bruise, every scan, and every lab result is documented for the district attorney."
"Already filed, Captain," he nodded before stepping out of the room.
A few minutes later, Claire stirred. She let out a long, soft breath, her long eyelashes fluttering open. Her hazel eyes slowly focused on my face.
"Ethan?" she whispered, her voice fragile.
"I'm here, my sweet girl," I leaned down, gently kissing her forehead and cradling her cheek in my hand. "I'm right here. You're safe. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."
Tears trickled down from the corners of her eyes, soaking into her white pillowcase. "I... I tried to hold on, Ethan. I tried so hard to be strong until you came home... but they took everything."
"Shh, don't talk like that," I whispered. "Tell me what happened, Claire. Tell me everything."
Claire swallowed hard, taking a trembling breath as she began to speak.
"It started three months after you shipped out," she said softly. "Your mother moved into the manor without asking. She brought Natalie with her. At first, they just took over the main rooms... but then Eleanor demanded I sign over control of the family bank accounts your father left for us."
"And when you refused?"
"She locked me out of the master bedroom," Claire wept quietly. "They moved my things down to the small maid's quarter in the basement. They took my phone, intercepted my letters to you, and blocked your calls from the base so I couldn't tell you the truth. Whenever I tried to leave the house, Natalie would lock the security gates..."
Her hands shook as she recalled the horrors.
"Tonight... tonight Eleanor brought out legal papers. She said it was a deed transfer, giving her full ownership of Oakridge Manor. She told me if I signed it, she would let me stay in the house as a servant. When I refused and tore the paper up... Natalie grabbed my arms from behind, and Eleanor dragged me out to the side gate. They pushed me onto the frozen gravel and locked the gate behind me... they told me to die out there..."

I held her tightly against my chest, feeling her tiny frame shake against my uniform.
"They failed, baby," I whispered into her hair, my voice trembling with resolve. "They thought they could break you, but they lost everything tonight. Oakridge Manor is yours. It was always yours. And tomorrow, the whole world will see what monsters they really are."
