Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

The drive to the house took fifteen minutes. Harold felt as though he were driving through a dream. His mind was a loop of the footage—the cruelty, the manipulation, the absolute, chilling control Melissa exercised over Eleanor. He had pulled over two blocks away and called the police, keeping his voice tight, explaining exactly what he had, who he was, and what was happening in the house.
He met the two officers on the porch. One was a sergeant, a man with a tired, kind face who looked at Harold with grim understanding.
"We have the footage, sir?" the sergeant asked.
Harold handed him the phone. The officer watched for thirty seconds, his expression hardening. He looked at his partner and gave a single, sharp nod. "Let’s go."
They didn't knock. They let themselves in with Harold’s key. The house was quiet, save for the hum of the refrigerator. They moved down the hall, the officers’ heavy boots muffled by the carpet. When they reached the bedroom door, the sergeant pushed it open.
Melissa was standing by the closet, rummaging through a jewelry box. She turned, her face a flash of shock, then immediate, calculated calm.
"Mr. Thompson?" she said, her voice rising in feigned alarm. "What on earth are you doing here? This is inappropriate. You’re scaring Eleanor."
Eleanor was curled in a ball on the bed, her eyes wide with shock. When she saw Harold, she let out a broken cry, "Harold!"
Harold brushed past Melissa, ignoring her, and went to his mother. He took her in his arms, feeling the brittle fragility of her bones, the frantic beat of her heart. He held her as if he could shield her from the entire world.
"It’s okay, Mom," he sobbed, his voice raw. "I’m here. I’m here."
Melissa stood her ground, arms crossed, her eyes narrow. "You’re making a mistake. She’s confused. She’s senile. She doesn't know what she’s saying, and neither do you."
The sergeant stepped forward, his badge gleaming in the dim light. "Melissa Reynolds?"
"Yes?"
"You’re under arrest for elder abuse and harassment."
Melissa laughed, a brittle, high-pitched sound. "This is absurd. He’s trespassing. He’s harassing a caregiver. You have no proof of anything."

"We have the video, Melissa," Harold said, standing up, his eyes locked on hers. He didn't shout. He didn't need to. The sheer contempt in his voice was enough. "We have the audio. We have the threats. We have the proof of the emotional and physical manipulation."
The color drained from Melissa’s face. The mask slipped, revealing the petty, cruel person underneath. She looked at the handcuffs, then at the door, her confidence dissolving. As they led her out, she didn't look at Eleanor. She didn't look at Harold. She stared straight ahead, a woman finally confronted with the wreckage of her own choices.
