Chapter 5 - The Perimeter Closes

Outside the thirty-acre Sterling estate, concealed beneath the canopy of dense oak trees lining the highway, four unmarked black tactical vans pulled to a quiet halt on the gravel shoulder.

The side doors slid open simultaneously without a sound.

Twelve operators clad in non-reflective black tactical gear, night-vision helmets, and suppressed automatic weapons poured out into the night, vanishing into the treeline like shadows.

Inside the command van, Senior Special Agent Marcus Vance stood before a wall of glowing monitors. His face was pale, his jaw set in a hard, violent line as he stared at the red beacon pulsing on his central tracking map.

"We have three confirmed distress pulses from Sarah's fob, Agent Vance," his deputy operator reported, her fingers flying across a mechanical keyboard. "Signal originated from the interior lower level of the primary residence twelve minutes ago. Her signal is now moving slowly toward the northeast quadrant of the estate grounds."

"Is she moving on her own?" Marcus demanded, his voice thick with suppressed fury.

"Gait analysis based on telemetry suggests manual crawling or low-velocity movement," the technician answered. "Her elevation is three feet below ground level. She's in a sub-surface conduit."

Marcus pulled his heavy tactical vest over his shoulders, snapping the steel side buckles into place with sharp, metallic clicks. He reached for his sidearm, racking the slide with absolute precision.

"Command to Assault Teams One and Two," Marcus spoke into his throat microphone, his voice dripping with lethal intent. "Target home contains six armed private security personnel wearing civilian suits. Primary targets are Arthur Sterling, Vance Sterling, and Beatrice Sterling. Authorize lethal force only if actively engaged."

"Understood, Lead," Team One leader replied through the earpiece. "What about the dinner guests?"

"Contain the house," Marcus ordered, stepping out into the cold night air. "No one leaves this property alive if my sister isn't standing on two feet when the dust clears."

Back inside the utility tunnel beneath the greenhouse, I reached the end of the narrow concrete shaft.

A heavy iron grate secured with a brass padlock blocked the exit to the outside world. I pressed my face against the rusty bars, drinking in the cool, crisp night air.

The greenhouse was dark, its glass panes covered in dust and overgrown ivy. Through the broken windows, I could see the rear lawn of the estate stretching out toward the main house, which blazed with golden light from every window.

Suddenly, the heavy wooden door of the greenhouse burst open.

A man stepped into the dark room, a heavy tactical flashlight beam cutting through the dust-motes. He wore a crisp dark suit, a concealed earpiece, and carried a silenced nine-millimeter pistol in his right hand.

It was Victor—Arthur Sterling's personal head of security.

"Sarah!" Victor called out softly, his voice echoing eerily off the glass walls. "Come out, little bird. Vance says you've lost your mind, but we know you're smarter than that. Just come out and take the shot the doctor brought for you. It doesn't have to be painful."

I shrank back into the darkness of the utility pipe, holding my breath, my bloody hands pressed flat against my chest.

Victor was five feet away from my grate.

Ten minutes remaining.
