Part 3: The Truth Hidden in Daniel’s Phone

The police officer’s words kept replaying in my head.

“Your husband was found tied up.”

“Someone was coming for you and your son.”

For the last hour, I had been running from Daniel.

And now I was being told Daniel might have been the only person trying to protect us.

My entire understanding of the morning collapsed.

I looked at Evan in the back seat.

He was exhausted, curled against the door, clutching his little toy truck so tightly his fingers had gone pale.

“Mommy,” he whispered.

I turned around.

“Are we safe?”

That question broke something inside me.

Because I didn’t know.

I had spent the last six years promising him that I would always protect him.

But right now, I was just as scared as he was.

The officer opened my door gently.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to get you somewhere secure.”

I nodded.

For the first time all morning, I stopped trying to figure everything out alone.

Twenty minutes later, we were inside a police station conference room.

Evan sat with a female officer who brought him juice and crackers.

I watched through the glass as he tried to be brave.

He was six years old.

And he had already learned that sometimes adults could not be trusted.

That thought destroyed me.

A detective entered the room.

His name was Detective Harris.

He placed a folder on the table.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to go over everything carefully.”

I nodded.

“Who attacked my husband?”

His expression tightened.

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

He opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

The first one showed Daniel at the airport.

My stomach dropped.

But then the detective pointed.

“Look closely.”

I stared.

Daniel.

The same clothes.

The same suitcase.

The same walk.

Then Detective Harris zoomed in.

“Your husband never entered the plane.”

I looked closer.

And then I saw it.

The man boarding had a wedding ring.

Daniel always wore his on his right hand because of an old injury.

This man wore his on his left.

A tiny detail.

But not Daniel.

I covered my mouth.

“Oh my God.”

Someone had impersonated him.

Someone had wanted me to believe he was leaving.

The detective nodded.

“Your son may have saved your life.”

I looked through the glass at Evan.

My little boy.

The one I almost didn’t believe.

“I should have listened immediately.”

Detective Harris didn’t judge me.

“You did.”

He tapped the folder.

“You acted before you had proof. That’s why you’re both alive.”

Then he pulled out another piece of evidence.

Daniel’s phone.

“Your husband regained consciousness briefly at the hospital.”

I leaned forward.

“What did he say?”

The detective hesitated.

“He asked one question.”

“What?”

“Did his wife and son make it out?”

My eyes filled.

Because even while injured...

Even after being attacked...

His first thought was us.

Not himself.

Us.

Then the detective continued.

“He also gave us access to his phone.”

My heart raced.

“Why?”

“Because he believed someone close to him was involved.”

The room went cold.

“Someone close?”

Detective Harris opened Daniel’s messages.

There were dozens.

Encrypted conversations.

Unknown numbers.

Photos.

Bank transfers.

Then one message appeared.

A message Daniel had received at 3:12 a.m.

She knows too much. Handle it before the flight lands.

I felt sick.

“Who sent that?”

“We’re still tracing it.”

He scrolled.

Another message.

From Daniel.

A reply.

If you touch my wife or my son, I will expose everything.

My breath caught.

Everything.

What was everything?

The detective looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, did your husband ever tell you about his work with the company he consulted for?”

I shook my head.

“Daniel worked in cybersecurity. That’s all I knew.”

Detective Harris exchanged a glance with another officer.

Then he said:

“Your husband wasn’t just a consultant.”

He slid a document across the table.

I picked it up.

My hands began trembling.

Because at the top was a name.

A company I recognized.

A company worth billions.

And underneath it...

A classified investigation file.

Daniel had been secretly helping federal investigators uncover a massive financial crime operation.

And the people involved were not strangers.

They were people we knew.

People who had been to our home.

People who had held Evan.

People who had sat at our dinner table.

My stomach turned.

“Who?”

Detective Harris stared at me.

“The person who organized the attack.”

He pushed another photo forward.

I looked down.

And froze.

Because the face staring back at me belonged to someone I had trusted for years.

Someone who had kissed Evan on the forehead.

Someone who had called me family.

Someone who had just attended our son’s birthday party.

My own hands went cold.

“No…”

Detective Harris lowered his voice.

“Yes, Mrs. Carter.”

He pointed at the photograph.

“The person behind this is your husband’s closest business partner.”

A pause.

“And we believe they thought Daniel was dead.”

I stared at the picture.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone in the room went silent.

I answered.

A man’s voice whispered:

“Mrs. Carter…”

I couldn’t speak.

The voice continued.

“Daniel told you never to trust anyone.”

A pause.

“Now you understand why.”

The call ended.

And seconds later, Detective Harris’ phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What is it?” I asked.

He slowly turned the phone around.

A message had appeared.

One sentence.

They found the boy.

My blood froze.

May you like

Because Evan was sitting only twenty feet away.

And someone was already inside the building.
