Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Cradle

The silence that followed the video revelation was absolute. Megan stared at the frozen image of Victoria Bennett on the tablet screen. Her face was pale, her expression tight with a desperate, calculating focus. This was a woman who had supposedly been recovering from a major, traumatic emergency cesarean section just three hours earlier.

"How is that physically possible?" Sarah whispered, staring over Megan's shoulder. "She had an emergency C-section. She shouldn't even be able to stand up, let alone walk down the hall, bypass security, and surgically alter infant identification bands."

"She didn't have a C-section," Megan realized, her mind racing through the timeline. "The admitting charts... who handled her admission?"

She turned to the computer terminal, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she accessed the electronic medical records. She bypassed the standard login using her charge nurse override code. She searched for Victoria Bennett’s admission file.

The file was nearly empty.

There were no surgical reports. No anesthesiology logs. No fetal heart rate monitor printouts. The only document in the file was a birth registration form signed by Dr. Robert Ramirez—the chief of pediatrics—and co-signed by Arthur Vance.

"It was a fake pregnancy," Megan whispered, the terrifying pieces of the puzzle finally falling into place. "Victoria Bennett was never pregnant. She used a prosthetic, or she simply lied, and she paid Arthur Vance and Dr. Ramirez to facilitate a fake birth. But why?"

"Because of the trust fund," a voice said from behind them.

Megan and Sarah spun around.

Officer Dave Briggs, the security guard, was standing by the nursery window, his face grim. He had been looking through a folder of personal security notes he kept in his pocket.

"I've been working security here for ten years," Briggs said, his voice low. "The Bennett family... they are one of the wealthiest old-money dynasties in the state. Old Arthur Bennett, Daniel's grandfather, left a massive, seventy-million-dollar trust fund. The terms of the trust are incredibly specific: the money only releases to the firstborn male heir of the third generation on his exact sixth-month birth anniversary. If there is no male heir by the end of this year, the entire trust is liquidated and donated to a national wildlife foundation."

"And Victoria Bennett couldn't have children," Megan completed the thought, her stomach turning. "So she planned this. She staged a pregnancy, bought off the hospital's chief of pediatrics and the overnight administrator, and planned to steal a healthy male infant born on the exact night she 'delivered.'"

"And that baby was the Torres baby," Sarah gasped. "The Torres family... they are working-class people. They don't have the money or the legal resources to fight a dynasty like the Bennetts. If Victoria took their son and claimed him as her own, no one would have ever questioned it. The hospital records would have shown Victoria gave birth to a healthy boy, and the Torres family would have been told their baby died of sudden infant death syndrome or a respiratory failure during delivery."

"That's why the bands were swapped," Megan said, her chest tight with a sickening rage. "They were preparing to declare Baby Torres as Baby Bennett, and they were going to let the real, biological Bennett baby—who was born with a mild, treatable heart murmur—be declared as 'deceased' under the Torres name to cover their tracks."

She looked at the two infants in the bassinets. One of these beautiful, innocent boys was being used as a seventy-million-dollar pawn, while the other was scheduled to be legally erased from existence.

"We have to go to the police," Sarah said, her voice shaking. "We have to show them this video."

"We can't," Briggs said, pointing to the window.

Through the glass, the scene in the hallway had escalated. Arthur Vance was no longer standing alone. He was flanked by three private security guards in dark suits—men who did not work for the hospital. Dr. Robert Ramirez was standing beside him, holding a medical syringe.

And behind them was Daniel Bennett, his face a mask of absolute, desperate confusion, completely oblivious to the fact that his own wife had orchestrated the theft of another family's child.

Vance stepped up to the intercom again. "Nurse Cole, we are entering the unit now. We have obtained an emergency medical order from Dr. Ramirez stating that you are experiencing a severe psychological episode and are holding the infants hostage. The security team is authorized to use force to bypass the lock."

Megan looked at the heavy steel doors. They were strong, but they wouldn't hold forever against commercial breaching tools.

"Sarah, Briggs," Megan said, her voice dropping to a calm, steady register. "We have five minutes. We need to verify the footprints ourselves. I don't care about the records in the basement. The ink is still on the babies' feet."

She ran to the supply cabinet, pulling out a bottle of specialized forensic solution and a clean sheet of white paper.
