Chapter 4 - The Shadow on the Porch

The headlights of a dark grey pickup truck swept across the front yard, casting long, sharp shadows across the porch as the vehicle skidded to a halt on the gravel driveway.

The driver’s door slammed open.

Mark Cole sprinted up the wooden steps, his face pale, his blue work shirt stained with oil and grease from the power plant. His hair was messy, and his eyes were wild with fear.

"Ethan!" Mark yelled, bursting through the front door. "Ethan!"

"Dad!" Ethan threw himself off the sofa and ran down the hallway, throwing his arms around his father’s waist.

Mark dropped to his knees, wrapping his thick, calloused arms around his son, burying his face in Ethan’s hair.

"I'm here, buddy," Mark breathed heavily, his body trembling with exhaustion and terror. "I'm so sorry... my phone was in my locker at the plant... I didn't see the calls until the police cruiser pulled up to the gate... is Rachel... is she—"

"She's at Memorial Hospital, Mr. Cole," Detective Olivia Grant said, stepping out from the dining room archway, her badge visible on her belt. "The medical team stabilized her breathing before transport, but she is in critical condition."

Mark looked up, his face filled with anguish. "What happened? The officer at the plant said she fell..."

"It wasn't just a fall, Mr. Cole," Olivia said calmly, gesturing toward the sofa. "Sit down. We need to talk about your mother."

Mark froze, his arms still around Ethan. His expression changed from panic to profound confusion.

"My mother? What does Linda have to do with this?"

"Your mother was here tonight, Mark," Olivia said, sitting back down across from them. "She arrived around eight o'clock and left at ten. While she was here, she prepared a cup of chamomile tea for Rachel."

Mark stared at the detective, his mouth opening slightly before closing again. "Linda... Linda was here? She told me she was going to church bingo tonight in Belleville..."

"She was here," Ethan whispered, clutching his father's sleeve. "She told me not to tell you, Dad. She said Rachel would get mad if she knew Grandma was visiting."

Mark slowly stood up, placing a hand on Ethan’s head. His voice dropped into a dark, hollow tone. "She lied to me again..."

"Mr. Cole," Olivia said sharply. "Did you know that your mother was subject to a court-ordered restraining order filed by your late wife, Clara, four years ago?"

Mark looked down at the floor, a deep, heavy sigh escaping his chest. He buried his face in his hands for a long moment before looking back at the detective.

"Clara didn't want Linda near Ethan," Mark admitted softly. "My mother... she has a severe personality disorder. When Clara was diagnosed with cancer, Linda convinced herself that Clara was unfit to raise Ethan, that Clara was 'corrupting' him. She started showing up at Ethan's preschool, trying to sign him out without our permission. We had to get the court involved."

"Why didn't you enforce that after Clara died?" Olivia asked tightly.

"Because she's my mother!" Mark cried out, his voice cracking with emotion. "After Clara passed away three years ago, I was drowning. I was working sixty hours a week just to pay off the medical bills. Linda apologized. She swore she was on medication. She swore she just wanted to be a grandmother to Ethan. I thought... I thought she had changed."

"She didn't change, Dad," Ethan said, his voice rising in sudden clarity. "She told me Rachel hated me! She told me that when the new baby came, Rachel was going to throw my things away! She told me the adoption papers were meant to erase Mom!"

Mark fell back onto the sofa, looking at his son with utter devastation in his eyes.

"Ethan... no..." Mark stammered, tears streaming down his face. "Rachel loves you more than anything in the world. She wanted to adopt you so that if anything ever happened to me at the plant, no one could separate the two of you!"

"I know now," Ethan said softly, reaching into his pocket and pulling out the creamy stationery letter. "Rachel wrote it in her letter. She told me about Mom."

Olivia’s phone suddenly vibrated against her wooden table.

She picked it up immediately. "Grant."

"Detective," the voice of Dr. Sarah Vance, the chief emergency physician at Memorial Hospital, came through the line. "I'm calling regarding Rachel Cole."

"How is she, Dr. Vance?" Olivia asked, stepping toward the window.

"We administered a concentrated dose of Flumazenil and performed an emergency gastric lavage," Dr. Vance reported rapidly. "Her blood pressure is stabilizing, and her central nervous system is recovering. She is conscious, though extremely weak."

Olivia released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. "And the baby?"

"That’s why I'm calling," Dr. Vance said, her tone growing urgent. "The severe drop in Rachel's oxygen levels triggered fetal distress. Her heart rate monitor showed prolonged decelerations. We had to perform an emergency Caesarean section twenty minutes ago."

Mark leaped off the sofa, stepping toward Olivia. "Is my baby alive? Is my wife okay?"

"Mr. Cole," Dr. Vance's voice echoed through the speaker phone as Olivia turned the volume up. "You have a healthy baby boy. He weighs five pounds, six ounces. He is currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for observation, but his oxygen levels are stable. Rachel is awake in the recovery suite and asking for Ethan."

Ethan gasped, a smile breaking through his tears for the first time all night.

"She's okay," Ethan cheered softly, grabbing his father's hand. "Dad! She's okay!"

"However, Detective," Dr. Vance added, her voice darkening. "You need to secure this hospital floor immediately."

Olivia’s eyes narrowed. "Why?"

"A woman matching the description of Linda Cole just entered the main lobby," Dr. Vance said tightly. "She presented a forged family visitor pass at the desk, claiming she was here to take her grandson home."
