Chapter 3 - THE CORPORATE COUNTERATTACK

By 8:00 A.M., the story had exploded across the Texas legal and financial sectors.

While Julian and Eleanor sat in separate holding cells at the Travis County Jail held without bail on charges of attempted capital murder and conspiracy, I sat in the executive conference room of Vance Development on the thirtieth floor of downtown Austin's glass tower.

Beside me sat Arthur Vance—my sharp, sixty-two-year-old attorney who shared no relation to my husband’s family despite the unfortunate name coincidence—and three forensic accountants I had hired four days prior.

"The initial audit is far worse than we anticipated, Madeline," Arthur said, sliding a thick leather-bound dossier across the mahogany table. "Julian didn't just plan an insurance fraud murder. Over the past eighteen months, he systematically embezzled $4.2 million from your primary commercial accounts."

I opened the folder, reviewing the complex network of shell companies registered in Delaware and the Cayman Islands. "Where did the money go?"

"A high-stakes offshore gambling ring based out of Costa Rica," Arthur replied, shaking his head in disgust. "He accumulated massive debt. He was in deep with some very dangerous creditors. The $1.5 million insurance payout wasn't just greed, Madeline. It was his desperate attempt to clear his debts before his offshore handlers exposed his fraud to your board of directors."

"And Eleanor?" I asked.

"Eleanor was his accomplice," Arthur continued. "She held two bank accounts in her name that were used to launder smaller amounts—around $300,000 over two years—which went directly toward funding Chloe's credit cards and her own personal luxuries."

I closed the folder with a sharp snap. "Freeze every account tied to their names. Every asset, every car, every line of credit. I want them stripped of every dollar they touched."

"Consider it done," Arthur smiled grimly. "We’ve already filed emergency ex-parte injunctions. By noon, Julian won't even have enough funds in his account to buy a bag of chips from the jail commissary. But there is another matter—the board meeting at eleven."

"I’m ready," I said.

At 11:00 A.M., the major stakeholders and board members of Vance Development gathered in the main boardroom. Rumors were already circulating through the building, and the atmosphere was thick with anxiety.

I walked into the room, eight months pregnant, dressed in a sharp black maternity suit, carrying myself with absolute authority. Behind me walked Arthur Vance and two uniformed private security officers.

The room fell instantly silent.

"Good morning, gentlemen," I said, taking my seat at the head of the table—the seat Julian had occupied for the past three years. "As many of you have undoubtedly seen on the morning news, Julian Vance has been arrested and charged with felony conspiracy and attempted capital murder."

Gasps rippled through the table. Board member Marcus Thorne stood up, his face pale. "Madeline... this is catastrophic for the company! Our stock value, our commercial lenders... if the press links this scandal to our $50 million Riverfront project—"

"The company's standing is completely secure, Marcus," I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave into pure ice. "Because as of five minutes ago, I have exercised my legal right as the 85% majority shareholder to permanently remove Julian Vance from his position as Chief Executive Officer."

I gestured to Arthur, who distributed copies of a fresh legal document to every board member.

"Furthermore," I continued, "our forensic team has uncovered that Julian embezzled over $4 million of corporate capital. I have personally covered that shortfall out of my private liquid reserves this morning. The company accounts are fully balanced. The Riverfront project will proceed on schedule under my direct leadership as returning CEO."

Marcus Thorne looked at the documents, then up at me, his expression shifting from panic to profound respect. "You're taking control back effective immediately?"

"I built this firm," I said, leaning forward and resting my hands flat on the glass table. "Julian was merely a manager I hired. I allowed him to wear the title, but I was always the foundation. The foundation remains untouched."

Just as the meeting concluded, Arthur’s assistant stepped into the room and leaned down to whisper in his ear. Arthur nodded and turned to me.

"Madeline, Julian’s public defender is on the line. He’s begging for a emergency bail hearing, and Julian is demanding to speak with you from jail. He claims he has information regarding other parties involved."

I stood up, adjusting my jacket. "Tell his public defender that I will see Julian in twenty minutes. But not to negotiate."
