Part 2

“Explain.”
My voice came out colder than I expected.
Ethan stared at me.
Not with guilt.
Not with anger.
With fear.
“Laura…”
I stepped closer.
The woman beside him immediately stood.
“I can explain,” she said.
I turned toward her.
“You know my name.”
She froze.
A strange silence filled the room.
The doctor looked between us.
“She’s the reason we called you,” he said quietly.
I frowned.
“The reason?”
The woman swallowed hard.
“My name is Sophie.”
She looked at Ethan.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.”
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“Find out what?”
Nobody answered.
And somehow, that scared me more than anything.
I looked back at my husband.
“Ethan, who is she?”
His lips parted.
But before he could speak, the doctor interrupted.
“Ma’am, your husband suffered serious injuries tonight. The police found him unconscious near the old highway bridge.”
My heart stopped.
“The bridge?”
I looked at Ethan.
“That’s almost forty minutes from his hotel.”
He looked away.
That was the moment I knew.
The business trip.
Boston.
The late meetings.
The excuses.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
“What happened?” I asked.
Sophie wiped her eyes.
“He saved me.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
Her voice shook.
“Someone was following me.”
She looked at Ethan.
“I called him.”
My stomach dropped.
“You called my husband?”
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Laura, please…”
“No.”
My voice cut through the room.
“You don’t get to say please.”
I looked at the man I had been married to for seven years.
The man who kissed me goodbye yesterday morning.
The man who promised he loved me.
And now he was lying in a hospital bed beside another woman.
“Start talking.”
Ethan looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
“I was going to tell you.”
I almost smiled.
People always said that when they were caught.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
“After I fixed it.”
“Fixed what?”
He looked at Sophie.
Then back at me.
“She’s my sister.”
The room went silent.
I blinked.
“What?”
Sophie lowered her head.
“I’m his half-sister.”
I looked at Ethan.
“No.”
The word came out automatically.
“No, you never mentioned a sister.”
His face tightened.
“Because I didn’t know.”
I stared.
“What does that even mean?”
The doctor quietly stepped away, giving us privacy.
Ethan took a shaky breath.
“My father had another family.”
I felt the floor shift beneath me.
“What?”
“He died six months ago.”
My eyes narrowed.
“You told me your father died ten years ago.”
Silence.
A terrible silence.
Ethan looked down.
“I lied.”
Those two words hurt more than I expected.
Because they weren’t about Sophie.
They were about everything.
Every memory suddenly had a question mark.
Every story.
Every conversation.
Every promise.
“Why?”
His eyes filled.
“Because I was ashamed.”
I crossed my arms.
“You were ashamed, so you built an entire fake life with me?”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“It wasn’t like that.”
“Then what was it like?”
He didn’t answer.
Sophie did.
“Laura…”
I looked at her.
“He didn’t marry you for money.”
The sentence confused me.
“I never said he did.”
She hesitated.
“But someone else did.”
My skin went cold.
“What are you talking about?”
Sophie reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this in my father’s belongings.”
She handed it to me.
My name was written on the front.
Not my address.
Not a nickname.
My full name.
My hands started shaking.
“When was this?”
“Three years ago.”
Three years ago.
That was the year before Ethan and I met.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
A letter from Ethan’s father.
And the first line made my blood run cold.
“If you are reading this, Ethan has already made the biggest mistake of his life.”
I kept reading.
My breathing became shallow.
“He believes he can protect everyone by carrying secrets alone.”
I looked up.
Sophie was watching me.
“What is this?”
She whispered:
“His father knew about you.”
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“Before I met Ethan?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
I looked at my husband.
“Why?”
Ethan’s face went pale.
Because he knew.
The truth was coming.
And this time, there was no way to hide.
I continued reading.
“Laura Bennett is not who she thinks she is.”
My heart stopped.
The room blurred.
“What does that mean?”
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Ethan.
“What does that mean?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Laura…”
“No.”
I stepped back.
“Answer me.”
Sophie looked terrified.
“Ethan, she needs to know.”
He closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“Your father and mine knew each other.”
I froze.
“My father?”
He nodded.
“They worked together.”
I laughed nervously.
Because it sounded impossible.
“My father died when I was twelve.”
“I know.”
“Then how would you know him?”
Ethan swallowed.
“Because your father wasn’t the man you were told he was.”
The words hit like a punch.
I stared at him.
“Don’t.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t do this.”
But he continued.
“Your father was investigating my father.”
My hands went numb.
“For what?”
Nobody answered.
Then Sophie whispered:
“For a crime.”
The room went silent.
And suddenly, my husband being found with another woman at 3 a.m. didn’t seem like the biggest mystery anymore.
Because the truth wasn’t about cheating.
It was about something buried for decades.
Something our families had hidden.
And something that had brought Ethan and Sophie together tonight.
I looked at the letter again.
There was one final sentence at the bottom.
A sentence that made my entire body go cold.
“Laura, if Ethan ever finds you… it means they know the truth.”
I looked up.
“Who is ‘they’?”
Ethan’s face lost all color.
And then the hospital lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
The door suddenly opened.
A police officer stepped inside.
“Mrs. Bennett?”
I turned.
“Yes?”
His expression was serious.
“We need you to leave with us immediately.”
My heart raced.
“Why?”
He looked at Ethan.
Then at me.
May you like
“Because the person who attacked your husband…”
“…is now looking for you.”
