Chapter 3 - The Threat in the Hallway

The two night-shift security guards, Marcus and Thomas, arrived in less than forty seconds. Both were former Chicago police officers, dressed in neat, dark blue uniforms with heavy utility belts that clinked softly as they moved. They stepped into the golden light of the east hall, their faces expressionless, their eyes instantly scanning the group.

"Mr. Whitmore?" Marcus asked, his hand resting casually near his holster.

"Escort this man off the property," Ethan said, pointing a finger at Daniel. "If he attempts to return, or if he is seen within five miles of the estate, contact the Lake Forest police and have him arrested for criminal trespass. And Marcus?"

"Yes, sir?"

"Take his phone. If he refuses, hold him until the police arrive."

Daniel did not wait for the guards to touch him. He took a step back, his hands raised in a mock gesture of surrender, his eyes fixed on Ethan with a look of pure, unadulterated venom. "This isn't over, Whitmore. You think you've built a wall around your little kingdom, but walls have a habit of falling down."

"Get him out," Ethan said.

As Marcus and Thomas escorted Daniel down the long, marble hallway toward the grand foyer, Daniel did not look back at Camille. It was not the look of a man leaving his lover, or even a cousin leaving a relative. It was the look of an accomplice, cold and calculating, waiting for the next phase of the plan to begin.

When the heavy, double oak doors of the front entrance finally clicked shut, the hallway fell into another deep, suffocating silence.

Camille stood with her arms crossed over her cream silk robe, her breath coming in short, rapid gasps. She looked at Ethan, her mind clearly working at a furious pace, trying to find a crack in his icy exterior.

"Ethan, please," she whispered, her voice trembling with what looked like genuine tears. "You're ruining everything. Eleven days from now, we are supposed to stand before three hundred people and promise our lives to each other. How can you let the babbling of a maid’s child destroy our future?"

Elena, still holding Sophie tightly against her chest, felt a cold dread wash over her. She knew that if Camille managed to talk her way out of this, her life—and Sophie's life—would be over. They would be thrown onto the streets of Chicago with no reference, no money, and no safety.

But she had seen the documents. She had seen the truth.

"Mr. Whitmore," Elena said, her voice shaking but clear. "I need to tell you something."

Camille’s head snapped toward her, her eyes turning into two sharp, deadly slits. "Elena, be very careful what you say next. A woman in your position... with a child to support... should be very careful about making accusations she cannot prove."

The words were not advice. They were a direct, brutal threat.

Elena’s face drained of all color, her hands tightening around Sophie’s small body.

"She has been stealing from me, Ethan," Camille said quickly, turning back to her fiancé, her voice rising in pitch. "I didn't want to tell you because I know how much you care about the staff, but my grandmother's diamond tennis bracelet disappeared from my dressing room six months ago. Elena was the only person who entered that room that day. I was going to let her go quietly after the wedding, but now... now I see she’s trying to destroy my reputation to protect herself."

"That's not true!" Elena cried, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "I have never taken a single thing from this house! Mr. Whitmore, you know me. I have worked for your family for three years. I have never lied to you."

Ethan stood between them, a wall of cold stone. He looked at Camille, then at Elena, and finally down at Sophie, who was watching him with wide, innocent eyes.

"No," Ethan said quietly. "Elena is not lying."

"Ethan!" Camille gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "How can you take the word of a servant over the woman you love?"

"Because the servant doesn't have a cousin named Daniel Vance who works as a senior acquisition agent for Crane Meridian Holdings," Ethan said.

The words fell like lead weights.

Camille’s jaw tightened, her face turning a strange, mottled red beneath her pale skin. "You... you had him investigated?"

"I have everyone investigated, Camille," Ethan said, his voice flat. "But until tonight, I believed your explanation that he was simply a family friend who helped you manage your personal accounts. I did not know he was visiting my house while I was away. I did not know he was discussing my medical authorizations."

He turned back to Elena. "What did you see on her tablet, Elena?"

Elena swallowed hard, her throat moving convulsively. She looked at Camille, who was staring at her with a hatred so intense it felt physical.

"I... I was cleaning the master suite last week," Elena whispered. "Miss Foster had left her iPad on the vanity, and the screen was still on. I went to move it so I could dust, and I saw a document. It had your name at the top, Mr. Whitmore. And... and it had a logo. A logo with a black crane."

"Crane Meridian," Ethan murmured.

"Yes," Elena nodded, her voice gaining strength. "I didn't understand the legal words, but there was a section about the 'transfer of controlling shares' in Whitmore Global. It said the shares would transfer to Crane Meridian immediately following the wedding... if you were 'legally unable to object.' And... and there was a signature at the bottom. Your signature."

"My signature?" Ethan's heart began to hammer against his ribs. He had never signed any such document. He had never even discussed a merger with Crane Meridian; in fact, he had actively rejected three of their buyout offers over the past two years.

"I... I took a picture of it," Elena said, her hand reaching into the pocket of her faded blue robe. "I was afraid. I knew that if I told you, Miss Foster would say I was lying. So I took one photo before she came back into the room."

She pulled out her phone—a cracked, older model iPhone—and unlocked the screen. With trembling fingers, she tapped the gallery and held the screen out toward Ethan.
