PART 3 — The Vanguard Family’s Biggest Mistake

Arthur arrived before sunrise.
He didn’t ask unnecessary questions.
That was why I trusted him.
He looked at Maya.
He looked at the photographs.
Then he looked at me.
“Tell me everything.”
I did.
Every word.
Every detail.
When I finished, Arthur slowly placed his briefcase on the table.
“They think she’s alone.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
He looked at Maya.
“They made the wrong assumption.”
Maya whispered:
“What happens now?”
Arthur sat beside her.
“Now we stop asking them for kindness.”
His voice became colder.
“Now we make them answer.”
By noon, Arthur had already found things.
Messages.
Security footage.
Hospital records.
And then the biggest discovery.
A call log.
From Marcus’s phone.
The night Maya was attacked.
He hadn’t called emergency services.
He hadn’t called anyone.
He had called Celeste.
The woman who hurt her.
And they talked for twelve minutes.
My hands shook.
Not from fear.
From rage.
“He helped her hide it,” I whispered.
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.”
My daughter covered her mouth.
The man she loved.
The father of her child.
Had chosen his family over her.
Then Arthur found something else.
A message from Celeste.
One sentence.
And it changed everything.
“The baby cannot become part of this family.”
Arthur looked at me.
“They didn’t just want Maya gone.”
He paused.
“They wanted the baby gone too.”
The room went cold.
May you like
Because suddenly this was no longer a family argument.
It was something much darker.
