PART 3 The Secret Inside The Arriaga Family

For several minutes, I stared at the phone.

The call had ended.

But the woman’s warning stayed.

They have someone inside.

Someone inside what?

The hospital?

The police?

The investigation?

My fingers tightened around the phone.

Because suddenly, I understood something.

The Arriaga family had never been afraid.

Not when they attacked my daughter.

Not when they left her bleeding.

Not when they lied.

People who are afraid make mistakes.

People who believe they are untouchable make plans.

I returned to Valeria’s room.

She was sleeping.

For the first time since I arrived, her face looked peaceful.

Almost like the daughter I remembered.

The little girl who used to run into my arms.

The teenager who told me her dreams.

The woman who believed love could change people.

I sat beside her.

And I made a promise.

Not to destroy myself for revenge.

To protect her.

There was a difference.

The next morning, Carlos arrived.

He placed a folder on the table.

“I found something.”

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Financial records.

Property transfers.

Medical reports.

“What is this?”

He looked serious.

“Everything connected to Santiago.”

I turned the pages.

Then stopped.

A payment.

A private clinic.

The amount was large.

“What happened there?”

Carlos shook his head.

“That clinic specializes in… confidential procedures.”

My blood ran cold.

“Are you saying they planned to hurt the baby?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

He didn’t need to.

Before I could process it, Detective Mendoza entered.

The same officer who found Valeria.

He removed his hat.

“Mrs. Ríos.”

I looked at him.

“Officer.”

He seemed uncomfortable.

“There’s something I need to tell you.”

I waited.

“The original police report was changed.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Changed?”

He nodded.

“Someone attempted to classify the incident as an accident.”

My hands became cold.

“Who?”

He hesitated.

“A supervisor.”

Silence.

The warning made sense.

Someone inside.

Someone protecting them.

“Did you stop it?”

He looked at me.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His expression hardened.

“Because I found your daughter first.”

A pause.

“And because I have a daughter too.”

For the first time in days…

I saw someone who understood.

Not as a lawyer.

Not as an investigator.

As a parent.

The investigation moved quickly.

And the truth became uglier.

Santiago wasn’t only violent.

He was drowning in debt.

The Arriaga empire looked powerful from the outside.

But behind the luxury…

There were problems.

Loans.

Hidden losses.

Business failures.

And a desperate need for money.

The $150,000 was never just about the amount.

It was about access.

About control.

About finding a way to survive.

Then we discovered the biggest secret.

A trust.

Created by Santiago’s grandfather.

A trust that would activate after the birth of the first legitimate heir.

My grandchild.

The baby they called a mistake.

The baby they wanted gone.

Was actually the key to everything.

I read the documents twice.

Then again.

Because I couldn’t believe it.

“They were going to hurt the baby…”

My voice broke.

“Because the baby was worth more alive than they wanted.”

Carlos nodded.

“They needed control.”

I looked through the window at Valeria.

“They almost killed their own future.”

That afternoon, Santiago came again.

This time alone.

No confidence.

No arrogance.

Just anger.

He entered Valeria’s room.

I stood immediately.

“What are you doing here?”

He looked at me.

“You don’t understand.”

I laughed quietly.

“No.”

I pointed at my daughter.

“You’re right.”

“You don’t understand what you did.”

His face hardened.

“You’re ruining my family.”

I stepped closer.

“No.”

My voice was calm.

“You ruined your family when you decided my daughter’s life was less important than your money.”

He looked toward Valeria.

For a moment…

Something changed.

Regret?

Maybe.

But it disappeared quickly.

“I never meant for this to happen.”

Those words.

The favorite excuse of people who caused damage.

I stared at him.

“You never meant for her to survive?”

He said nothing.

Because there was no answer.

Then Valeria woke up.

Weakly.

“Santiago?”

He turned.

His face softened.

“Valeria…”

She looked at him.

Not with love.

With fear.

And that destroyed him more than anger could.

“Why?”

One word.

That was all.

Why?

Why did you hurt me?

Why did you let them hurt me?

Why did you choose them?

Santiago opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because sometimes the truth is too ugly to say.

After he left, Valeria cried.

“I’m sorry, Mom.”

I held her hand.

“For what?”

“I didn’t listen.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

She looked at me.

“You loved someone.”

A pause.

“That doesn’t make you stupid.”

She cried harder.

“I should have seen it.”

I kissed her forehead.

“You survived.”

That night, I received another message.

This time, it wasn’t a warning.

It was a threat.

A photo.

Valeria sleeping in the hospital.

Taken from inside.

My blood froze.

The message said:

Stop digging.

Or next time, we won’t miss.

I looked at the photo.

Then at my daughter.

Then at the door.

Someone had been watching us.

Inside the hospital.

Close enough to take pictures.

Close enough to hurt her again.

I called Detective Mendoza.

His answer came immediately.

“Mrs. Ríos?”

My voice was cold.

“They know we found out.”

Silence.

Then:

“Where are you?”

“The hospital.”

“Leave the room.”

I looked at Valeria.

“I won’t leave her.”

A pause.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“Mrs. Ríos…”

His voice became serious.

“The person helping them just tried to access your daughter’s medical records.”

My heart stopped.

“Who?”

The answer came slowly.

“Someone with hospital clearance.”

I looked at the door.

And realized…

May you like

The enemy wasn’t outside.

They were already inside.
