PART 9 — THE PERSON BEHIND THE SHADOW

PART 9 — THE PERSON BEHIND THE SHADOW
For several seconds, Estela couldn’t speak.
The apartment suddenly felt different.
The same warm lights.
The same quiet room.
The same flowers on the table.
But the peace she had built disappeared the moment Arturo spoke those words.
Someone else.
Someone close.
Someone who had influenced Mauricio.
“Arturo…”
Her voice was low.
“Who?”
There was a long silence on the other end.
And that silence frightened her more than any answer.
“Mrs. Ortega, I need you to promise me something.”
“What?”
“Do not confront this person alone.”
Estela gripped the phone tighter.
“Arturo, I am not a child.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me.”
Another pause.
“Lorena.”
The name hit her like a wave.
Lorena.
Her daughter-in-law.
The woman who had lived under the same roof.
The woman who had watched her fall.
The woman who had called her dramatic.
“No.”
The word escaped before she could stop it.
Not because she defended Lorena.
Because she didn’t want to believe it.
Another betrayal.
Another person.
Another wound.
“Are you sure?”
Estela asked.
“Yes.”
Arturo’s voice became serious.
“Ricardo began documenting everything months before he passed away.”
“What did he find?”
“He discovered conversations.”
“Between Mauricio and Lorena.”
Estela closed her eyes.
“What kind of conversations?”
“About your assets.”
A pause.
“And about making you believe you were incapable of living alone.”
Estela felt sick.
Because those words sounded familiar.
How many times had Lorena said:
“Estela, you’re not as strong as you think.”
“You shouldn’t make decisions by yourself.”
“You need us.”
At the time, she thought it was concern.
Now…
It sounded like a plan.
“What else?”
Arturo hesitated.
“Ricardo suspected Lorena was the one pushing Mauricio to move you into their home.”
Estela remembered that day.
Mauricio holding her hands.
Crying.
“Mom, we’re worried about you.”
“We want you with us.”
She remembered feeling loved.
Protected.
Safe.
But what if it wasn’t love?
What if it was convenience?
Arturo continued.
“There’s more.”
Estela waited.
“Your husband found evidence that Lorena had already researched transferring property ownership.”
The room went silent.
The old house.
Her house.
The one connected to her parents.
Her memories.
Her entire life.
“She wanted my house.”
It wasn’t a question.
Arturo didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The next morning, Estela woke up early.
She barely slept.
Her mind replayed everything.
Every conversation.
Every smile.
Every moment she ignored.
Because she wanted peace more than truth.
But truth had a way of finding its way in.
At ten o’clock, someone knocked.
Estela already knew who it was.
She opened the door.
Lorena stood there.
Perfect hair.
Perfect clothes.
Perfect expression.
The same woman everyone admired.
“Estela.”
She smiled.
But this time, Estela noticed.
The smile didn’t reach her eyes.
“Come in.”
Lorena stepped inside.
She looked around.
“You’ve made yourself comfortable.”
A strange sentence.
Not:
I’m glad you’re okay.
Not:
You look better.
Just a comment.
Estela sat.
“Why are you here?”
Lorena looked surprised.
“Can’t I visit?”
“You can.”
A pause.
“But I want to know why.”
Lorena’s expression changed slightly.
Then she sighed.
“I know Mauricio came here.”
“Yes.”
“And he apologized?”
Estela looked at her.
“Yes.”
Lorena nodded.
“Good.”
But she didn’t sound happy.
She sounded worried.
“Why?”
Estela asked.
Lorena frowned.
“What?”
“Why do you care?”
“I care because he’s my husband.”
“No.”
Estela’s voice was calm.
“You care because something changed.”
For the first time, Lorena looked uncomfortable.
“You’re imagining things.”
Estela almost smiled.
That sentence.
The same one everyone used.
You’re tired.
You’re emotional.
You’re imagining.
But she wasn’t.
Not anymore.
“Did you know Ricardo was investigating?”
Lorena froze.
Only for a second.
But Estela saw it.
And that was enough.
“Who told you that?”
The reaction came too fast.
Too naturally.
Estela leaned back.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“I didn’t tell you he was investigating.”
Silence.
Lorena realized her mistake.
Too late.
“You’re trying to trap me.”
Estela looked at her.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m finally listening.”
Lorena stood.
“This is ridiculous.”
“Sit down.”
The authority in Estela’s voice shocked them both.
Lorena slowly sat.
“You thought I was weak.”
Estela said.
“You thought because I was old, because I was kind, because I forgave…”
She looked directly at her.
“That meant I didn’t understand.”
Lorena’s jaw tightened.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.”
Estela frowned.
“What?”
“For this family.”
The words came out.
Bitter.
“You think it was easy?”
“I married a man who was always chasing approval from you.”
“I raised Valeria.”
“I supported Mauricio.”
“I kept everything together.”
Estela listened.
Because there was anger there.
But also something else.
Resentment.
“I never asked you to sacrifice your honesty.”
Lorena went quiet.
Then she laughed.
A small, cold laugh.
“You really think you’re innocent?”
Estela stared.
“What does that mean?”
Lorena leaned forward.
“You spoiled him.”
The accusation landed.
“You made him dependent.”
“You rescued him every time.”
“You taught him that mistakes had no consequences.”
Estela felt the truth inside those words.
Not the whole truth.
But a piece.
“Yes.”
She whispered.
“I did.”
Lorena looked surprised.
“But I was wrong.”
A pause.
“And my mistake does not excuse yours.”
The room became still.
Then Lorena said something that changed everything.
Something Estela never expected.
“You want the truth?”
Estela looked at her.
“Yes.”
Lorena smiled sadly.
“Your husband knew more than you think.”
“What?”
“He knew Mauricio was struggling.”
“He knew.”
Lorena’s voice shook.
“And he still chose to protect you instead of helping us.”
Estela froze.
“Protect me?”
“Yes.”
“He left us with nothing.”
There it was.
The real wound.
Not greed.
Not just money.
A feeling of abandonment.
“You hated me because Ricardo protected me?”
Lorena looked away.
“I hated that he always chose you.”
Estela felt a strange sadness.
Because behind all of this…
Was another person who felt unseen.
Another person who turned pain into bitterness.
But then Lorena made one mistake.
She reached for the folder on the table.
The one containing Ricardo’s documents.
Estela saw it.
“Don’t.”
Lorena stopped.
Slowly.
“You really don’t trust me.”
“No.”
Estela answered honestly.
“Not anymore.”
The next moment happened quickly.
Lorena grabbed the folder.
And ran toward the door.
Estela stood up.
“Lorena!”
But she was already gone.
For a moment, Estela just stood there.
Shocked.
Then she reached for her phone.
And called Arturo.
“She took the documents.”
There was silence.
Then Arturo said:
“Mrs. Ortega…”
“Yes?”
“I think she just proved everything.”
Estela looked at the open doorway.
The doorway where Lorena disappeared.
And for the first time…
She wasn’t afraid.
Because the person who spent years hiding behind lies…
Had finally made the biggest mistake.
May you like
She revealed herself.
