Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM AMBUSCADE

At 8:55 a.m., the seventy-fifth floor of the Mercer Tower on Park Avenue was quiet, bathed in the sharp, sterile sunlight of a clear Manhattan morning.

Inside the executive boardroom, twelve men in three-thousand-dollar suits sat around a thirty-foot table crafted from polished Brazilian mahogany.

At the head of the table sat Julian Mercer.

He looked immaculate. His silver-streaked hair was combed back with precision, his tailored charcoal suit fitted his lean frame perfectly, and a smug, victorious smile rested on his lips as he glanced down at his gold Rolex watch.

Beside him sat Chairman Sterling, a heavy-set man in his late sixties, nervously flipping through a stack of legal documents.

"It's five to nine, Julian," Sterling muttered, wiping sweat from his forehead with a silk handkerchief. "Are you sure Luke won't show up? My sources say his private security team was active in Queens last night."

Julian let out a light, dismissive laugh, taking a sip of black espresso from a porcelain cup. "Relax, Arthur. My brother is sitting in his Tribeca compound drowning in scotch. He hasn't left his apartment in three days. He's a broken man. He lost his wife, he lost his pride, and by ten o'clock today, he'll lose his company."

Vice President Hayes nodded in agreement, leaning forward. "The proxy votes are locked. With Volkov’s backing, we have sixty-two percent of the voting power. Once we sign the resolution, Luke’s power of attorney is voided, and the Brooklyn port deal goes through immediately."

"Then let's bring this meeting to order," Julian declared, standing up, resting his hands flat on the mahogany table. "Gentlemen, we are here today to vote on Resolution 409—the total restructuring of executive management and the complete revocation of Luke Mercer's voting rights due to mental incapacity and abandonment of duties—"

BOOM.

The heavy double mahogany doors of the boardroom didn't just open; they slammed inward with a deafening crash, hitting the interior walls so hard the glass light fixtures rattled in the ceiling.

Two private security guards standing outside the door flew backward, sprawling across the marble floor.

Julian froze, his mouth half-open.

Stepping through the shattered doorway was Marco Reyes, holding a black leather briefcase, his imposing frame blocking the entrance. Behind him stood six uniformed agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Special Agent Marcus Vance.

And walking right between them was me.

I wore a charcoal pinstripe suit, my leather shoes clicking with sharp, deliberate cadence against the marble floor. My hair was combed back, my jaw was set like granite, and my eyes locked onto Julian with an intensity that caused every man in that room to instantly sit up straight.

The room went dead silent.

"Luke?" Julian gasped, his voice losing its smooth composure, dropping an octave into pure shock. "What... what is the meaning of this? This is a private executive session! You have no right to be here!"

I didn't answer him immediately. I walked slowly down the length of the thirty-foot table, my gaze sweeping over Chairman Sterling, Vice President Hayes, and the other board members. Every single one of them lowered their eyes, unable to meet my look.

I stopped at the head of the table, standing directly across from my brother.

"You're standing in my chair, Julian," I said softly, my voice calm, smooth, and echoing off the glass walls.

Julian’s face flushed red with sudden anger. "Your chair?! You resigned three months ago! You walked away! You're mentally unfit to run a hot dog stand, let alone a multi-billion-dollar enterprise! Guards! Escort him out!"

None of the guards moved. They stood frozen near the door, staring at the six federal agents standing behind Marco.

"The guards aren't going to help you, Julian," I said, leaning forward, resting my palms on the cool wood of the table. "And neither is Nikolai Volkov. He was arrested forty-five minutes ago at JFK Airport trying to board a private jet to Zurich."

Julian's eyes widened in sheer terror. "What... what are you talking about?"

I nodded to Marco.

Marco stepped forward, opened his briefcase, and tossed a thick stack of legal documents onto the center of the table.

"Federal indictments," Special Agent Vance declared, stepping up beside me. "Julian Mercer, Arthur Sterling, and Thomas Hayes. You are all under federal arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, grand larceny, illegal offshore money laundering, and corporate espionage."

"This is ridiculous!" Chairman Sterling shrieked, jumping out of his chair, his face pale as chalk. "I am the Chairman of this board! You can't arrest me on the word of a washed-up ex-CEO!"

"We don't just have his word, Mr. Sterling," Agent Vance said coldly. "We have twenty-four hours of decrypted satellite phone recordings, wire transfer receipts from the Cayman Islands, and the full confession of two enforcement officers from the O'Malley outfit in Hell's Kitchen who were paid to assault and intimidate Luke Mercer's wife."

The entire boardroom erupted into chaotic shouting.

Board members began standing up, yelling at Julian, trying to distance themselves from the head of the table. Vice President Hayes sank back into his chair, covering his face with his hands, weeping openly.

Julian stood frozen, staring at me as if I were a ghost risen from the grave.

"You..." Julian whispered, his jaw trembling. "You set me up."

"No, Julian," I said, stepping closer until I was standing inches from his face. "You set yourself up. You mistook my patience for weakness. You thought that because I walked away to protect the woman I loved, I had lost my teeth."

I leaned in, lowering my voice so only he could hear it.

"You stole her money," I whispered, every word sharp as a razor blade. "You starved my wife. You sent thugs to put their hands on her while she was carrying my son. You thought you could destroy my family and steal my life."

Julian swallowed hard, his arrogant composure completely shattered, sweat dripping down his collar. "Luke... please... we're brothers... family..."

"Family?" I let out a low, terrifying laugh. "You stopped being my brother the second you placed a finger on Elena."

I reached out, grabbed the silk lapels of his three-thousand-dollar suit, and pulled him forward until his eyes were inches from mine.

"You are going to surrender your corporate shares," I ordered softly. "You are going to sign over every asset you own to a trust fund registered in my son's name. And then you are going to spend the next twenty years of your life sitting in a federal penitentiary thinking about what happens when you cross Luke Mercer."

Agent Vance stepped forward, clicking a pair of steel handcuffs behind Julian's wrists.

"Julian Mercer, you have the right to remain silent," Agent Vance read neutrally, pulling Julian back from the table.

As the federal agents led my brother, Chairman Sterling, and Vice President Hayes out of the boardroom in chains, the remaining board members sat in stunned, terrified silence.

I walked over to the head of the table, pulled out the heavy leather executive chair, and sat down.

I folded my hands over the mahogany desk, looking around at the remaining men in the room.

"Gentlemen," I said smoothly, pulling the sleek black fountain pen from my breast pocket. "Resolution 409 is officially canceled. Let's get back to work."
