Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the sun rose over a vastly different landscape for the Thorne and Vance families.
The Washington Post financial section ran a lead headline that sent shockwaves through northern Virginia's defense corridor: THORNE GLOBAL SECURITY ASSETS FROZEN PENDING FEDERAL PROCUREMENT AUDIT.
In a modest two-bedroom apartment in Arlington, Chloe Vance sat on her unmade bed, surrounded by half-packed suitcases and stacks of unpaid luxury magazine subscriptions.
Her phone was ringing constantly.
Her wedding planner had just canceled the deposit reservation for the $120,000 reception venue at the Ritz-Carlton, citing a declined credit card. The dress designer in New York had placed her custom gown on hold. And Marcus Thorne had stopped answering her calls three hours ago.
The front door of the apartment clicked open.
My mother walked into the living room, her face pale, her hair unstyled for the first time in twenty years. She was carrying a paper bag containing coffee from a gas station.
"Did she answer?" my mother asked, her voice hollow and trembling as she set the bag on the counter.
Chloe looked up, her eyes swollen red from a night of endless crying. "No! She blocked my number! She blocked Marcus's number! Mom, the bank just declined my debit card at the grocery store! They locked our joint account!"
"Your father is at the district office right now," my mother said, dropping into a kitchen chair, her hands shaking as she pulled out a cardboard coffee cup. "He tried to meet with his old National Guard commander to see if he could mediate with Zariah's unit. They wouldn't even let him past the security gate at Fort Myer. The guard told him Captain Vance was persona non grata on military installations."
"She's doing this on purpose!" Chloe shrieked, slamming her fist against her mattress. "She's doing this because she's jealous of me! She's always been jealous because I was the pretty one! Because Dad loved me more!"
My mother looked at her younger daughter, a sudden, heavy silence settling over the room. For the first time in thirty years, the gloss of favoritism seemed to peel away, exposing the ugly, hollow truth underneath.
"Chloe..." my mother whispered, her voice cracking. "She paid your tuition. She paid your rent for eighteen months. She bought you your first car while she was living in a shipping container in Afghanistan."
"She had military money!" Chloe screamed back, her face contorted in rage. "She didn't need it!"
"She almost died for it!" my mother snapped, slamming her hand onto the table, her own tears finally spilling over. "Did you see those tags, Chloe?! Did you see her chest under that dress?! She has bullet scars the size of my fist on her back! And we sat there... we sat there at that table and let that arrogant boy call her a servant!"
Before Chloe could answer, the apartment doorbell rang—a loud, persistent chime that rang three times in rapid succession.
Chloe jumped out of bed, a sudden flash of hope filling her eyes. "It's Marcus! He fixed it!"
She sprinted to the front door and pulled it open.
Standing on the welcome mat was not Marcus Thorne.
It was two federal agents from the Department of Justice, dressed in dark suits, holding leather file folders. Behind them stood two uniformed Virginia State Troopers.
"Chloe Vance?" the lead agent asked, pulling a laminated badge from his coat pocket.
"Y-yes?" Chloe stammered, stepping back.
"I am Special Agent Miller, Federal Financial Crimes Task Force," the man said cleanly. "We have a seizure warrant for the 2024 BMW 4 Series parked in your garage space, as well as a subpoena for all financial records pertaining to gifts, asset transfers, and credit accounts provided to you by Marcus Thorne over the past twenty-four months."
Chloe’s breath hitched in her chest. "My car?! You can't take my car! Marcus bought that for my birthday!"
"Marcus Thorne bought that vehicle using funds drawn from a Thorne Global Security escrow account reserved for federal military logistics," Agent Miller replied coldly, pulling a set of towing papers from his folder. "That constitutes federal wire fraud and conversion of government property. Hand over the keys, Miss Vance, or you will be placed under arrest for obstruction."

Chloe looked past the agent, out toward the parking courtyard, where a flatbed tow truck was already backing toward her pristine white convertible.
She collapsed against the doorframe, sliding down onto the floor, her screams echoing through the apartment complex hallway as her mother stood in the kitchen, staring silently into her cold coffee cup.
