PART 3

The video continued playing.

For a moment, nobody in the room moved.

The image of Emily filled the screen.

My wife.

The woman I had spent thirty-eight years loving.

The woman who had smiled through pain, hidden her tears, and carried burdens she never wanted anyone else to carry.

She looked fragile.

But her voice was steady.

“Andrew, my son… if you are watching this, please understand. I am not making this video because I want revenge. I am making it because I need you to know the truth before it destroys you.”

My son sat frozen.

His eyes never left the screen.

Lauren looked different now.

The perfect makeup.

The expensive jewelry.

The confident posture.

All of it was gone.

She looked like someone who had finally realized there was no escape.

Emily continued.

“I found out Lauren did not marry you because she loved you.”

Andrew closed his eyes.

A tear rolled down his face.

But Emily’s next words were worse.

“She married you because of the inheritance.”

The room felt like it stopped breathing.

I looked at Andrew.

My son looked broken.

Not angry.

Broken.

Because sometimes the truth hurts more than a lie.

A lie lets you keep hope.

The truth takes everything at once.

Michael paused the video.

Nobody spoke.

Then Andrew slowly looked at Lauren.

“Is this true?”

Lauren shook her head immediately.

“No.”

Her answer came too fast.

Too desperate.

“Andrew, you’re really going to believe a sick woman over me?”

The moment she said it, I saw Michael’s expression change.

He looked almost disappointed.

Because Lauren had just repeated the exact thing Emily warned us about.

Andrew noticed too.

His voice became quiet.

“Don’t call my mother sick.”

Lauren opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Michael pressed play again.

Emily’s voice returned.

“Lauren believed if she controlled the story, she could control everyone.”

The video showed Emily opening a drawer.

She pulled out a small notebook.

“I kept records.”

Page after page appeared.

Dates.

Times.

Bank transfers.

Messages.

Names.

Emily had been documenting everything.

Every suspicious conversation.

Every missing document.

Every time Lauren pressured her.

My hands started shaking.

Because I remembered all those days when Emily seemed distant.

I thought she was tired.

I thought the illness was taking away her happiness.

But she had been investigating.

Alone.

Emily turned a page.

“The first thing Lauren tried to take was not money.”

She looked into the camera.

“It was control.”

Andrew frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Michael answered quietly.

“Keep watching.”

The video continued.

“Lauren wanted Andrew to believe I was incapable of managing my own affairs. She wanted him to sign documents giving her access.”

Andrew looked confused.

“What documents?”

Michael reached into the folder.

He pulled out copies.

“These.”

Andrew grabbed them.

His face changed as he read.

“What…”

His voice cracked.

“These are power of attorney forms.”

Michael nodded.

“Prepared six months ago.”

Andrew looked at Lauren.

“You wanted control over Mom’s accounts?”

Lauren suddenly became angry.

Not scared.

Angry.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed for this family!”

The words exploded out of her.

Everyone went silent.

Because she had revealed something without realizing it.

Andrew stared at her.

“Sacrificed?”

Lauren stood.

“I gave up years of my life dealing with your mother!”

I felt something inside me turn cold.

Because Emily had spent years loving this woman.

And this was how she spoke about her.

Michael calmly said:

“Sit down, Mrs. Pierce.”

For once…

Lauren listened.

She sat.

But her eyes were filled with hatred.

The video continued.

Emily’s voice became softer.

“The hardest part was not discovering what Lauren wanted.”

She paused.

“The hardest part was discovering who was helping her.”

Andrew looked up.

“What?”

The video froze again.

Emily reached toward another envelope.

She opened it.

And removed a photograph.

Michael paused the video.

“Your mother wanted this part shown carefully.”

He opened another folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Andrew stared at it.

Then his face turned pale.

“No.”

The photo showed Lauren.

And another man.

Standing outside a hotel.

Holding hands.

Not casually.

Intimately.

The date was printed in the corner.

The same week Andrew was away on a business trip.

But the man beside her…

was someone Andrew knew.

Someone close.

His own cousin.

Daniel.

The room erupted.

Andrew stood so quickly the chair fell backward.

“Lauren…”

She immediately started crying.

Not the fake tears I had seen before.

Real panic.

“Andrew, please listen.”

He stepped back.

Like he suddenly didn’t recognize the woman in front of him.

“You were cheating on me?”

“No.”

The answer was weak.

“It wasn’t like that.”

Michael looked at the papers.

“Emily recorded their conversations.”

Lauren froze.

“What?”

Michael opened the final file.

“She knew you would deny everything.”

He looked at Andrew.

“Your mother left one last recording.”

He pressed play.

A new audio file began.

At first, there was only silence.

Then Lauren’s voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“Once Emily is gone, Andrew will have no reason to question anything.”

Andrew covered his mouth.

The recording continued.

Another voice appeared.

Daniel.

“And the house?”

Lauren laughed.

“He’ll give it up eventually. He always does what people tell him.”

My son looked like someone had physically hit him.

Because the betrayal was no longer hidden.

It was real.

And it was cruel.

But then Lauren said something that made my entire body freeze.

Something Emily had saved until the very end.

“The only problem is Richard Collins.”

My name.

I looked up.

The recording continued.

“If Richard finds out what we’re doing, everything falls apart.”

Lauren replied:

“Don’t worry. By the time he understands, it’ll be too late.”

The audio stopped.

Silence.

Then Michael slowly looked at me.

“Mr. Collins…”

He hesitated.

“There’s one more thing your wife left behind.”

I swallowed.

“What?”

He placed a final envelope on the table.

This one had my name on it.

Richard Collins.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Only three sentences.

But those three sentences changed everything.

Because Emily wrote:

“Richard, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.”

“The person who helped Lauren enter our family was someone you trusted.”

“And you already know his name.”

I looked up.

Confused.

Terrified.

Then the office door opened.

May you like

And the person standing there made Andrew gasp.

Because Emily’s final secret had just walked into the room.
