Chapter 4 - The Financial Apocalypse

Before Carmen Robles could even recover enough breath to scream for her personal lawyer, the side doors of the grand ballroom opened again.
Two men in dark, tailored suits holding official leather briefcases walked briskly into the room, flanked by two uniformed officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety and an agent from the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division.
The lead IRS agent walked straight up to the head table, ignoring the stunned crowd of high-society guests who were still frantically recording every second on their smartphones.
“Carmen Robles?” the agent asked, displaying a federal badge.
Carmen clung to her purse like a shield, her voice barely audible. “Yes... what is this?”
“I am Special Agent Marcus Vance with the IRS Criminal Investigation Division,” the agent announced loudly, his voice echoing across the silent room. “As of eight o'clock this morning, federal arrest warrants and asset freezing orders have been executed against Robles Development Group.”
A loud gasp rippled through the remaining guests.
“What?!” Carmen shrieked, her voice reaching a shrill, hysterical pitch. “On what grounds?! This is a mistake! My legal team will have you fired!”
“You are being formally charged with grand tax fraud, municipal bribery, wire fraud, and systematic money laundering,” Agent Vance replied calmly, pulling a thick stack of certified federal documents from his briefcase. “An anonymous, highly detailed forensic audit was delivered to our regional director at six a.m. today, containing complete digital records of your offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, as well as evidence that you forged municipal inspection documents for the city center development project.”
Javier looked up from his seat, his face ghostly white. “Offshore accounts? Mom... what is he talking about?”
“Shut up, Javier!” Carmen snapped, her manicured facade completely disintegrating into unhinged panic.
“Furthermore,” the second official stepped forward, presenting a state legal notice, “the City Planning Commission has officially canceled all municipal contracts with Robles Development Group effective immediately, citing severe breach of contract and criminal investigation. All bank accounts associated with your firm have been frozen by court order.”
Carmen’s knees buckled. The woman who had spent decades lording her wealth and status over everyone in Dallas collapsed onto the plush carpet of the raised platform, her pastel pink Chanel suit crumpled, her gold jewelry gleaming uselessly under the bright chandelier lights.
“Javier...” she wept, reaching out for her son. “Javier, do something! Call our bankers! Call the mayor!”
Javier didn't reach back out to help her.
Instead, he looked around the room—at the cameras flashing in his face, at the city officials who had turned their backs on him, at the federal agents standing over his mother, and finally at Sofia.
He saw his wife standing beside her father—unbroken, proud, supported by a force he could never hope to comprehend.
Javier scrambled back from his mother, trying to pull himself up by the edge of the table. “It wasn't me! It was all her! My mother ran the company! I didn't know anything about the tax fraud! I didn't beat Sofia—my mother did!”
The entire ballroom stared at him with profound, utter disgust.
Alexander stepped forward, stepping between Javier and Sofia, looking down at the cowardly young man who had let his mother attack his bride for a property deed.
“You’re right, Javier,” Alexander said, his voice flat and devastatingly heavy. “You didn't beat her. You just stood outside the door and let it happen. Which makes you a coward as well as a criminal.”
Agent Vance stepped around the table, grabbed Javier by the shoulder, pulled his arms behind his back, and snapped a heavy pair of steel handcuffs around his wrists.
“Javier Robles,” the agent said coldly, “you are also under arrest as a co-conspirator in federal bank fraud and felony extortion.”
As the federal agents pulled Javier to his feet and began leading him down the center aisle of the ballroom alongside his weeping, ruined mother, the crowd of guests stepped back to let them pass, pointing their phone cameras directly into their pale, disgraced faces.
Carmen Robles looked back one last time as she was led toward the exit doors.
She looked at Clara, who stood calm, composed, and victorious.
She looked at Sofia, who stood tall, her head held high, no longer the terrified girl who had knocked on her mother's door at three in the morning.

And she looked at Alexander, who simply adjusted his jacket, his job completed with military perfection.
The Robles empire had not just fallen. It had been completely, irreversibly erased in less than thirty minutes.
