Chapter 10 - The Three Blank Cards

Six months later. Spring.

The grand courtyard of Bellevue Place was transformed into an enchanted garden filled with thousands of white roses, pale blue hydrangeas, and soft fairy lights hanging from the old oak branches.

Over three hundred guests—including the city’s finest community leaders, pediatric doctors, estate staff, and true friends—sat along the manicured lawn under a bright, sunny May sky.

Andrew stood at the floral altar at the head of the garden, wearing a tailored navy-blue tuxedo, his face illuminated by a joy so complete that even his oldest business associates barely recognized him.

Beside him stood Marcus Vance as his best man, smiling warmly.

The harpist began to play a soft, sweeping acoustic rendition of "What a Wonderful World."

Through the double mahogany doors of the house stepped Ruby.

Now four years old, she looked like a tiny angel in a soft white chiffon flower-girl dress, holding a small woven basket filled with pink rose petals. She walked down the white aisle with solemn, proud precision, carefully dropping three rose petals with every step she took.

When she reached the altar, she didn't just stand to the side. She walked right up to Andrew, patted his leg, and gave him a bright, mischievous grin.

Then came Denise.

She walked down the aisle on the arm of Richard, the estate manager who had become like a father to her over the past year.

She was radiant beyond words in a sweeping, lace-embroidered white gown, her dark hair crowned with small white blossoms, her eyes locked entirely on the man waiting for her at the end of the aisle.

When Richard placed Denise’s hand into Andrew’s, Andrew leaned down and whispered, "You are the most beautiful sight I have ever seen."

"And you," Denise replied softly, "are our miracle."

The ceremony was short, intimate, and filled with deep, emotional vows that brought tears to the eyes of almost every guest in the garden.

When the minister announced, "I now pronounce you husband and wife," Andrew pulled Denise into his arms, kissing her with a deep, passionate tenderness that erupted into a storm of cheers and applause across the sunlit lawn.

At the grand reception that evening, held under a high white pavilion canvas on the rear lawn, Andrew stood up at the head table to give his groom's speech.

He held a small silver microphone in his right hand.

In his left hand, he held three small, framed cream-colored index cards—the very same cards he had pulled from his desk on a cold, rainy evening eighteen months ago.

The crowd quieted down, listening intently as Andrew tapped the microphone.

"Eighteen months ago," Andrew said, his rich voice echoing softly through the evening air, "a three-year-old girl sat at my kitchen table and made three wishes."

He held up the first framed card.

"'Wish One,'" Andrew read aloud. "'One full weekend off every week for Mommy, fully compensated.'"

The crowd smiled, looking over at Denise, who was beaming beside him.

He held up the second framed card.

"'Wish Two,'" Andrew read, his voice softening. "'Shoes that don't let the water in.'"

A few mothers in the audience dabbed their eyes with cloth napkins.

He held up the third framed card.

"'Wish Three,'" Andrew read, looking directly into his wife's tear-filled eyes. "'A table where Mommy doesn't have to count the pennies before we eat.'"

Andrew set the three framed cards gently down on the white linen tablecloth in front of him.

Then, he pulled a small, pristine white envelope from his inner tuxedo pocket and pulled out three brand-new, blank cream index cards.

He handed them down to four-year-old Ruby, who was sitting happily on a high velvet chair between her mother and her new father.

"Ruby," Andrew said softly, his voice thick with profound, unconditional love as he crouched down beside her chair before the entire assembled crowd. "Your first three wishes saved this family. Now, I am giving you three new blank cards."

Ruby looked at the fresh white cards, then up at Andrew’s warm, loving face.

"What do I write on these?" she asked innocently.

May you like

Andrew smiled, taking Denise’s hand into his own while keeping his arm wrapped securely around Ruby’s shoulders.

"Anything you want, my little girl," Andrew whispered, kissing her cheek as the sun set over the horizon, bathing the entire estate in a warm, golden, everlasting light. "Because from this day forward... we have all the time in the world to make them come true."
