Part 7: The Letter That Changed Everything

No one moved.

The envelope rested against the glass door like it had been placed there with absolute confidence.

No threats.

No shouting.

No weapons.

Just five words.

To Amy Carter Alone.

The man outside folded his hands behind his back.

“We’ll wait.”

My father immediately stepped forward.

“You’re not opening that.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t know who sent it.”

Mr. Blackwood shook his head.

“I do.”

Everyone turned toward him.

His face had lost all color.

“It carries the Trust seal.”

I frowned.

“What seal?”

He pointed.

The back of the envelope bore a dark blue wax stamp.

A hawk with its wings spread.

Encircled by a Latin phrase.

Veritas Ante Omnia.

“What does it mean?” I asked.

Mr. Blackwood answered quietly.

“Truth before everything.”

Aunt Rose inhaled sharply.

“I haven't seen that seal in thirty years.”

Thirty years.

How old was this organization?

Who were these people?

The hotel manager unlocked the café door.

One of the suited men stepped inside alone.

He carried himself like an attorney.

Not a bodyguard.

Not security.

He stopped exactly six feet from our table.

“Miss Carter?”

“Yes.”

He offered a slight nod.

“My name is Thomas Reed.”

“I've been instructed to deliver this to you personally.”

My father held out his hand.

“I'll take it.”

Thomas didn't even look at him.

“I’m sorry.”

“The instructions were very specific.”

“Miss Carter and no one else.”

I reached out.

My father caught my wrist.

“Amy.”

I met his eyes.

“I’m done being protected from my own life.”

Slowly...

He let go.

Thomas placed the envelope into my hands.

The paper was thick.

Heavy.

Expensive.

Like something meant to survive generations.

I broke the seal.

Inside was a single folded letter.

At the top was today's date.

Below it...

My name.

Amy,

If you are reading this, your wedding has already fallen apart.

I stopped breathing.

“How…”

I looked up.

Thomas remained expressionless.

I looked back down.

If you're frightened, that's understandable.

But you are not in danger.

You are finally being told the truth.

My hands trembled.

I continued reading.

Your engagement was monitored from the day it began.

I froze.

“What?”

Maverick stared.

“What does that mean?”

Mr. Blackwood slowly sat down.

He already knew.

Or suspected.

Every financial transfer.

Every contract.

Every unusual request.

Every forged document.

We watched all of it.

The room became silent.

I looked at Thomas.

“You were investigating him?”

Thomas answered calmly.

“No.”

“We were investigating everyone.”

A chill ran down my spine.

Everyone?

The letter continued.

The Trust exists for one purpose.

To protect the Carter family from financial coercion.

I looked at my father.

He closed his eyes.

“You knew.”

He nodded once.

“I signed the agreement before you were born.”

I felt betrayed.

Again.

“How many secrets have you kept from me?”

His voice broke.

“Too many.”

I looked back at the letter.

Your fiancé was not the first person to attempt access to Trust assets.

He was the fourth.

Fourth?

I blinked.

Fourth.

Not second.

Not third.

Fourth.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas answered quietly.

“There were three previous attempts.”

“When?”

“When you were twenty-two.”

“When you were twenty-five.”

“And when you were twenty-eight.”

I stared.

“I've never even been engaged before Maverick.”

“No.”

“You weren't.”

“Then who?”

Thomas looked at me.

“Business partners.”

“Investment advisers.”

“A former boyfriend.”

The room tilted.

Former boyfriend?

I whispered,

“Ethan?”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

My stomach dropped.

Ethan.

The man I'd dated for nearly two years before meeting Maverick.

The man who left suddenly after asking strange questions about my family's finances.

I always thought he'd simply fallen out of love.

He hadn't.

He'd failed.

The realization hurt almost as much as today's betrayal.

“How many people…”

My voice cracked.

“…have wanted me because of money?”

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

The letter reached its final page.

Today was never a failure.

It was confirmation.

Mr. Maverick Bennett eliminated himself before irreversible legal damage occurred.

That sentence sounded cold.

Clinical.

Almost ruthless.

Yet…

It was true.

If we'd married…

Untangling everything could have taken years.

At the bottom of the page was one final instruction.

Please proceed to Ballroom A.

I frowned.

“The ballroom?”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Someone is waiting.”

“Who?”

“I cannot say.”

Aunt Rose suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at her.

She smiled for the first time all afternoon.

“Well.”

“What?”

She looked at me.

“I think your wedding isn't over.”

I blinked.

“What?”

She pointed toward the ballroom across the street.

“Three hundred people.”

“A bride.”

“A beautiful dress.”

“And apparently…”

She glanced at Thomas.

“…a very unusual reception committee.”

I couldn't help smiling.

Despite everything.

“I'm not getting married.”

“No.”

She chuckled.

“But perhaps you're finally meeting the people who spent your whole life making sure you didn't marry the wrong man.”

That was a strange thought.

Comforting.

And unsettling.

At the same time.

We crossed the street together.

The ballroom doors opened.

Inside…

Every guest was still there.

No one had left.

The quartet had stopped playing.

The conversations died the moment I entered.

Three hundred people stood.

Not one whisper.

Not one judgmental look.

Just quiet support.

Then I noticed someone standing at the altar.

A woman.

Mid-fifties.

Elegant gray suit.

Silver hair.

She held another folder.

Thomas leaned toward me.

“Miss Carter…”

“She is the Chair of the Blackwood Trust.”

The woman smiled warmly.

“Welcome home, Amy.”

Before I could ask what she meant…

She opened the folder.

Looked directly at me.

And said the words that made my father collapse into the nearest chair.

May you like

“According to your grandfather's final instructions…”

“…today is also the day you become the controlling owner of Carter Technologies.”
