Chapter 10 - A New Kingdom

Dawn broke over the Kane estate in brilliant shades of gold and pale pink, burning away the cold fog that had hung over the valley for weeks.

The estate grounds were quiet now. Lucian and his men had spent the night cleaning the perimeter, removing all traces of the violent intrusion. Julian Moretti and his syndicate had been systematically dismantled before the sun had even touched the horizon—a message sent to every crime family in the country that Gabriel Kane’s borders were absolute and unforgiving.

Inside the grand mansion, the heavy iron security shutters were raised, allowing the morning light to flood the mahogany corridors and marble staircases.

In the master dining room, the long twenty-foot oak table was set. But for the first time in twenty years, Gabriel was not sitting at the head of the table alone.

Nora sat in a high chair to his right, happily swinging her legs while eating a plate of pancakes covered in maple syrup. She was wearing a new yellow dress that Mrs. Whitfield had brought back from the city, and her ragged blanket was draped neatly over the back of her chair.

Maren sat directly next to Gabriel, dressed in a soft cream sweater. The bruise on her cheek was fading, replaced by a warm, quiet flush as Gabriel reached under the table, finding her hand and weaving his long fingers through hers.

Mrs. Whitfield entered the room, carrying a silver pot of fresh coffee. She looked at the three of them sitting together, a rare, genuine smile gracing her aging face.

"More coffee, Mr. Kane?" she asked.

Gabriel looked up, his gray eyes clear, bright, and entirely free of the exhaustion that had weighed them down for decades.

"No, thank you, Mrs. Whitfield," Gabriel said softly. "I have everything I need."

Mrs. Whitfield bowed her head gently and retreated, leaving the family alone in the sunlit room.

Nora dropped her fork with a small clatter, looking up at Gabriel with syrup smudged across her cheek. "Gabriel?"

"Yes, Nora?" he replied, leaning toward her.

"Is the storm gone forever?"

Gabriel looked at Maren, his thumb gently caressing the back of her hand, feeling the warm, steady pulse of her blood. He looked back at the little girl who had walked into his office on a rainy Thursday night and broken down twenty years of stone walls with three simple knocks.

"The storm outside will come and go, little one," Gabriel said, his voice deep, warm, and filled with an unshakeable promise. "But inside this house, as long as I am standing... nothing will ever hurt you again."

May you like

Nora giggled, satisfied with the answer, and returned to her pancakes.

Maren leaned her head against Gabriel’s shoulder, closing her eyes as the warm sunlight washed over them. Gabriel wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close, feeling the peace he had spent a lifetime searching for finally settle into his home, his life, and his heart.
