Part 2: The Billionaire Who Showed Up

By the time Nathaniel Ward arrived at Mercy Harbor Medical Center, the emergency surgery had already begun.

Rainwater dripped from his coat as he rushed through the sliding glass doors.

The maternity floor was chaos.

Nurses moved quickly between stations.

Phones rang.

Monitors beeped.

The smell of antiseptic filled the air.

Nathaniel spotted his sister immediately.

Dr. Amelia Ward stood outside Operating Room Three, still wearing surgical scrubs beneath her lab coat.

One look at her face told him everything.

"How bad?" he asked.

Amelia crossed her arms.

"Placental abruption."

Nathaniel felt his stomach tighten.

Even he knew enough medicine to understand the danger.

"The babies?"

"We're trying."

"And Claire?"

Amelia hesitated.

"She lost a lot of blood."

For a moment neither spoke.

Behind the operating room doors, surgeons fought to save three lives.

Meanwhile Damon Westbrook was nowhere in sight.

Nathaniel glanced around the waiting area.

Empty.

No husband.

No family.

No friends.

Just silence.

"Still no sign of him?"

Amelia laughed bitterly.

"He called once."

Nathaniel looked at her.

"What did he ask?"

She stared at the floor.

"He wanted to know if the media had been notified."

Nathaniel blinked.

"That's what he asked?"

"That was his first question."

A nurse nearby shook her head in disgust.

Nobody said anything else.

Because there was nothing left to say.

Forty minutes later, the operating room doors burst open.

A pediatric team rushed out first.

Inside two incubators were tiny babies.

A boy.

And a girl.

Both impossibly small.

Both connected to tubes.

Both fighting.

Nathaniel stood as they passed.

The infant boy let out a weak cry.

The sound cut through the hallway like a blade.

"Twins delivered," a doctor announced.

"Premature but alive."

Nathaniel released a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

The babies had survived.

But Claire was still inside.

And the expression on Amelia's face told him the danger wasn't over.

Another thirty minutes passed.

Then another.

Nathaniel remained in the waiting room.

He could have left.

Most people would have.

Claire wasn't family.

She wasn't his employee.

She wasn't even a friend.

But every time he considered leaving, he remembered Amelia's words.

She's alone.

So he stayed.

At 11:43 p.m., the operating room doors finally opened again.

Amelia stepped out.

Exhausted.

Pale.

But smiling.

"She's stable."

Nathaniel closed his eyes briefly.

Thank God.

"The bleeding is under control?"

"Yes."

"And the babies?"

"NICU."

Amelia smiled softly.

"They're fighters."

For the first time that night, Nathaniel felt relief.

Then the elevator doors opened.

And Damon Westbrook finally arrived.

He entered the hallway looking irritated.

Not frightened.

Not devastated.

Irritated.

His tuxedo jacket remained perfectly pressed.

His tie perfectly straight.

His hair perfectly styled.

A woman followed two steps behind him.

Blonde.

Young.

Beautiful.

Nathaniel recognized her instantly.

Vanessa Reed.

Damon's executive assistant.

The same woman who somehow attended every conference, every gala, every business trip.

The woman everyone whispered about.

Amelia's expression darkened immediately.

Damon approached.

"How is she?"

The question sounded forced.

Like something he knew he was expected to ask.

Amelia folded her arms.

"She almost died."

Damon nodded.

"Okay."

Nathaniel stared.

Okay?

That was his response?

Amelia looked stunned.

"The twins are in intensive care."

"Will they make it?"

"We believe so."

"Good."

Again.

Nothing.

No emotion.

No relief.

No gratitude.

Just another item checked off a corporate agenda.

Then Damon finally noticed Nathaniel.

His eyes narrowed instantly.

"You."

Nathaniel didn't move.

"Me."

"What are you doing here?"

The tension between them filled the hallway.

Every nurse nearby suddenly became very interested in their paperwork.

Nathaniel smiled coldly.

"Someone had to show up."

Damon's jaw tightened.

"This is my family."

Nathaniel glanced toward the ICU corridor.

Then toward Claire's room.

Then back to Damon.

"Really?"

The single word landed like a punch.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Mr. Ward, this isn't the time."

Nathaniel looked at her.

For the first time.

Carefully.

And something about her expression caught his attention.

Not concern.

Not worry.

Fear.

The kind of fear people wear when they're protecting a secret.

Nathaniel filed the observation away.

Years in business had taught him one thing.

Fear always points toward something valuable.

An hour later Claire finally regained consciousness.

The room was dim.

Machines beeped softly.

Everything hurt.

Her abdomen.

Her chest.

Her throat.

Her heart.

The first thing she remembered was the blood.

Then the twins.

Panic surged through her.

"My babies..."

A nurse immediately appeared beside her bed.

"They're alive."

Claire began crying.

Instantly.

Completely.

Relief breaking through terror.

"They're alive?"

"Yes."

The nurse smiled.

"A little boy and a little girl."

Claire sobbed harder.

For several moments she couldn't speak.

Then she whispered the question she already knew the answer to.

"Damon?"

The nurse hesitated.

Just long enough.

Claire understood immediately.

He hadn't been there.

Of course he hadn't.

The tears changed.

No longer relief.

Something deeper.

Something lonelier.

Then another voice came from the doorway.

"Actually..."

Claire turned her head.

A tall man stood there.

Dark coat.

Gray eyes.

Tired face.

Nathaniel Ward.

She stared in confusion.

"What are you doing here?"

Nathaniel walked slowly into the room.

For a moment he looked uncomfortable.

Almost embarrassed.

Then he answered honestly.

"You shouldn't have been alone."

Claire broke.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just quietly.

The way people break when someone finally shows them kindness after surviving cruelty for too long.

And outside the room, standing beside a window, Vanessa Reed watched through the glass.

Her hand trembled around her phone.

Because she had just received a text message that made all the color leave her face.

Damon: Delete everything. Now.

And suddenly Vanessa realized Damon wasn't worried about losing his wife.

He was worried about losing something else.

May you like

Something far more valuable.

The truth.
