Chapter 6 - The Justice System

Three weeks later.

The trial of Dr. Harrison Blake, Marcus Kane, and Evelyn Harper swept through the national media like a hurricane.

The combination of high-stakes corporate espionage, attempted murder of billionaire heirs, and betrayal by trusted domestic staff captured the public's fascination. But behind closed doors, the legal machine operated by Vincent Moretti’s legal team was absolute, devastating, and relentless.

I sat in the witness gallery of the Bridgeport Federal Courthouse, watching as the prosecutor presented the evidence.

The defense had attempted to argue that Dr. Blake was suffering from a psychological break brought on by intense professional pressure. But the paper trail uncovered by Arthur Vance and federal investigators painted a far more sinister picture.

Dr. Blake had spent three years funneling money out of the BioPharm trust to pay off massive personal gambling debts in Macau and the Cayman Islands. When he realized that Isabella Moretti’s pediatric patent portfolio was worth over two hundred million dollars, he devised the plan to systematically poison the boys, acquire the patent rights, and sell them to a foreign pharmaceutical conglomerate.

Mrs. Harper had been promised two million dollars to facilitate the access, while Marcus Kane was paid fifty thousand dollars for each chemical dispersion visit.

When the verdict was read, it took the jury less than twenty minutes to deliberate.

Guilty on all counts: Attempted First-Degree Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Corporate Espionage, and Grand Larceny.

Judge Margaret Danforth did not hold back during sentencing.

Dr. Harrison Blake was sentenced to consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. Marcus Kane received thirty years in federal prison, and Evelyn Harper was sentenced to twenty-five years.

As the guards led Dr. Blake away in handcuffs, he paused near the gallery rail, looking at Vincent, who sat calmly beside me.

“You got lucky, Moretti,” Blake sneered bitterly.

Vincent stood up slowly, looking the ruined doctor dead in the eye.

“I didn't get lucky, Blake,” Vincent said, his voice cold and resolute. “I hired the right nanny.”
